Liles signs four-year extension

Some surprising news this morning, as the Leafs have announced a four-year contract extension for blueliner John-Michael Liles, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

From TSN:

The Toronto Maple Leafs will announce today that the club has signed defenceman John-Michael Liles to a four-year, $15.5 million contract extension.
It’s weird timing for a move like this, considering Liles has missed the last fifteen games with a concussion. This extension also stirs up a lot of rumors about what the Leafs will do in the next couple weeks, now that they’ve potentially taken a good chunk of cash away from being used to shop in the summer.

    As I said last night, I had just got done working 22 out of the past 30 hours, so I didn’t have time to keep tabs on the Leafs and just found out about the Liles extension.
    I think this is great, as I didn’t wanna see him dealt at the deadline and now that he has a 4 year deal (below market value) there is no chance Burke trades him!

    With 8 NHL defencemen now and atleast 10 heading into next season, what is Burke gonna do to make room on the backend?

    Gunnarsson – Phaneuf
    Liles – Franson
    Gardiner – Schenn
    Aulie – Komisarek
    (Holzer, Blacker and Lashoff)

    I’m not a fan of either guy, i think they’re both shit, although I can see how there speed if utilized properly can be effective, but not at that price.

    Lombo is taking up a roster spot that could have been Frattin or Colborne
