Tonight the Leafs will should be desperate for a win, as they cling to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.   The players have acknowledged that their trip out west left much to be desired.  They have vowed to come out strong here at home as they know that even the awful play of Alex Ovechkin won’t be able to keep the Washington Capitals below them much longer if they keep losing at this rate.  They’ll be in tough against a New Jersey team that has ripped off eight ROW wins in their last ten games and have consequently surged up the standings.

The Devils have seen success recently, partly due to the steady play of Martin Brodeur, who has been dominant since getting embarrassed in Calgary last month.  The goaltending legend is showing that he can still play at an elite level, going 3-0-0 with a 0.956 SV% over the past week.  Thankfully, Brodeur hasn’t played his best games against Toronto in recent years, a trend that hopefully continues tonight.

The other factor in New Jersey’s success has been the resurrection of Ilya Kovalchuk (ok…he wasn’t that bad last year) and the return of Zach Parise.  After a slow start, Kovalchuk has been a dominant force, leading the NHL in avg ice time as a forward and sitting seventh in shots on goal.  Second in the NHL in avg ice time and ninth in shots on goal? Zach Parise.

Wait, two 300+ shooters can coexist on the same line without a black hole opening at center ice?  These two players have coexisted and thrived with a fantastic complementary center in Adam Henrique (the three as a line have accounted for 32% of Kovalchuk’s total output).  They all play a determined and skilled game at both ends of the ice, and should receive special attention from Dion Phaneuf tonight.

Mike Komisarek will once again be a healthy scratch. With the recent efforts of Steve Yzerman to ship out players that were no longer needed in Tampa one has to wonder if Brian Burke would ever be able to accomplish the same with Komisarek.  This will be challenging of course, because Kubina, Moore and Downie all had that special something called “value”.  Carl Gunnarson will return to the lineup tonight, providing that calming force for Phaneuf in their efforts to contain the Parise line.

even with the shit-show that gus performed tonight we need to go back with him against san jose, i know a few people here want to see us trade for bernier, but hes a goalie who isn’t proven to be a #1 in the nhl and i dont want us to trade any good assets for a “maybe” goalie, im sick of seeing those types of goalies come to toronto and shit their pants

I dunno about that. After tonight he may have lost the room. I’m not sure you can continue to play either guy…it’s gotten really bad in a hurry.

How about Stevie Wonder he could of stopped all 3 weak goals…….for everyone that was calling for Gus to play instead of Reimer well I say we run the table without playing a goalie pull the goalie right after the first faceoff and play with 6 players on the ice.You never know what will happen then. Our goalies are killing us we battle back from being down 2-0 then 3-2 and blow it all up in O.T..I guess this is Gus’s way to say to Ron Willie play me more and I will play better. We need to bring up Scrivens and give the boy a chance what do we have to lose.

Say what you want about Reimer. He hasn’t been stopping all the ones he should be, but I don’t think he has allowed as bad of goals as Gusto did tonight, during his entire pro career.

I enjoy how Schenn still has YEARS before we can judge him (he is a 3.5year vet…) and Gus is in his 3rd year and he is done and never will be…is it possible that Schenner is also not as good as we made him out to be?

Nope goal scorer and it’s over before we get to the shit. BTW not much said with Gardiner going for the skate on Ponikarovski’s goal.

Reimer has not been better, and the team needs to play better in front of both.

Gustavsson is 28 years old. If he isn’t any good now, he probably won’t be any good in three years.
