Deadline Primer: Rangers backing out of Nash talks

It appears as though the price for Rick Nash has climbed to an unattainable level for some clubs, including even the most aggressive of all; the New York Rangers.

Darren Dreger had this to say only a few minutes ago:

Hard to blame NYR for not blowing up team to make Nash trade. For sake of deadline, let’s hope CBJ softens to keep possibility of trade open.

NYR wasn’t willing to pay price established for Nash prior to today + today CBJ asked for more than they were originally after

Now, I’m not sure if this indicates that the Rangers’ most current offer was matched and Howson went back to Sather to see if he wanted to go even higher. But that could be the case as it appears there are still others out there who remain interested in Nash.

Both the Predators and Leafs have yet to be cleared from the Nash talks, so we’ll see how that pans out in the next 20 hours or so.

It’s been reported that Toronto will not unload Gardiner to get this deal done. Personally, I’m baffled that they’re still rumored to be involved at all. Dreger mentioned earlier this morning that the Leafs and Jackets haven’t talked in days, so I’m sure it’s quite possible that things fizzle out.

Judging by the remarks from Grabo’s agent today, I doubt he’s going anywhere.

We have to be sellers tomorrow. Gather assets we can parlay into a #1 center in the summer. I would start with grabo and would consider Dion for 1st plus a prospect

I think if Burke starts ANY trade talk with the Names Connoly , Kami etc, he’ll be talking to the empty line on the phone..nobody wants our garbage anymore than we want theirs.
From the looks of things a very quiet Deadline is approaching and going to pass without much fanfare.

I think it will depend on what else Burke has cookin but we’ll find out soon enough. I don’t see Connolly going anywhere either actually.

As much as I think no one would take Connolly or Komi off our books (we got them for nothing) for nothing I have to be reminded what BB got for Beauch.

I personally always saw him as a 3C with 2C upside. Still do. Not sure where the experts would place him.

Totally agree that they ‘can’ be moved but not as centerpieces to any deal, they’ll be the throw in, or salary match, the ‘third’ player named in any deal,
I know that Burke has parlayed these type of players into other assets and i’m hoping he does so this year too…
Also agree that Connoly is better than he’s shown in the blue and white, but don’t think he was up to the chore in the first place…he’s Not a 1st line center on anyone’s team .

maybe you shouldn’t put too much stock into high light reels? obviously it has brought your expectations to an unreachable level.

agree, at the right price, anyone is moveable. Burke could price these players at a discount and that would look attractive to teams looking to address specific needs without wanting to relinquish a lot of assets. Everything at the right price. If anything gets done tomorrow, I think a deal to offload komo, lombardi, or connolly is done.
