Deadline Primer: Rangers backing out of Nash talks

It appears as though the price for Rick Nash has climbed to an unattainable level for some clubs, including even the most aggressive of all; the New York Rangers.

Darren Dreger had this to say only a few minutes ago:

Hard to blame NYR for not blowing up team to make Nash trade. For sake of deadline, let’s hope CBJ softens to keep possibility of trade open.

NYR wasn’t willing to pay price established for Nash prior to today + today CBJ asked for more than they were originally after

Now, I’m not sure if this indicates that the Rangers’ most current offer was matched and Howson went back to Sather to see if he wanted to go even higher. But that could be the case as it appears there are still others out there who remain interested in Nash.

Both the Predators and Leafs have yet to be cleared from the Nash talks, so we’ll see how that pans out in the next 20 hours or so.

It’s been reported that Toronto will not unload Gardiner to get this deal done. Personally, I’m baffled that they’re still rumored to be involved at all. Dreger mentioned earlier this morning that the Leafs and Jackets haven’t talked in days, so I’m sure it’s quite possible that things fizzle out.

I have no idea why, but my thoughts keep going back to Stastny…especially since I do think Grabo will be resigned….so is there any sense in bringing in Stastny?

why would nash really want to come to toronto now? im thinking that he waited to see what position the team would be in following this weekend and has now decided “hey the leafs arent looking that great right now, how about we make a deal with new york?”

IMO yes but Connolly would have to move. I guess the question is would you rather our centers be:
    Stastny, Grabo, Bozak
    or
    Bozak Grabo Connolly
    .
personally I go with option A

sounds as if Nash and this agent really want this done for tomorrow, so it could very well be the day he moves……hopefully to us….in a reasonable trade.

if he were a rental on an expiring deal I would agree with you but he is looking for a place to spend the next 6 years of his career….. at least. I think he can look at the big picture, see what Burke and co. have done here so far and see that this team is headed in the right direction. He has probably taken into account the fact that we’re a rich team that can spend to the cap each and every season which gives him a good opportunity to have a good team built around him. There are a lot of reasons for him to come here besides growing up a fan.

Screw just “making” the playoffs..this season is cooked in or out.
I want Stanley…and don’t think Burke should just make deals for the present if mortgaging the future.
I say a coaching/system change and some roster tweaks and this group looks/plays a lot better

…for over the hump past their prime players. Now what Burke wants to do is use his youth to upgrade to players that are still very youthful themselves. I see this as distinctly different then what JFJ and the others did before.
