GDT: Leafs at Blackhawks (8 p.m., TSN)

I’m not sure how to populate this space with anything remotely hopeful. The Leafs are the worst team in the league at the moment, seem to have been totally figured out by the opposition, have lost confidence in their abilities and on top of that are doing themselves in with mind numbing mistakes most nights. They go into the Chicago Madhouse tonight, where the Blackhawks have posted a 21-7-4 record, in a back to back situation which has not favoured them this season.

All we can hope is that the Leafs don’t get the Blackhawks’ best (they won’t have Toews tonight) and do get a little luck and a stop every now and then. The luck won’t ever come though if this team doesn’t dig deep and show some pride. Joffrey Lupul has been throwing the body more, Phil Kessel has been digging deep in the way he knows how, and Mike Brown has been hitting everything that moves, but largely this team is hanging its head and looking around for answers.

But hey, with the playoff outlook looking bleak and a lottery pick nearing, maybe the Leafs are back where they’re comfortable and will surprise us all with a win tonight.

Getting rid of Burke would be stupid…Burke’s only fault in all of this is purposely getting peoples’ expectations up

Nice match-up tonight again by Coach Cleats, 4th line vs 1st line, he must be in the running for Coach of the Year Honors, in the great ole USA. Gunnarsson was one of the few that understood how to be a rover defenseman, tonight he too looked like a rookie. And for all the Luke Schenn bashers, the only guy tonight with a pair of balls, all the rest play RW pussy hockey.

I guess we’ll see come playoffs, but yeh they look strong as fuck. Haven’t watched many of their games, but heard they work hard. Do they have the skill depth to handle the teams that can match their defensive game in the playoffs though? Dunno yet…

Effort, they look like peewee’s in their defensive coverage, not one or two, all of them, and that sir is Coaching.

I don’t think our slide is all that discouraging. The fact we were playoff calibre until our recent slide tells me we finally have decent skill as a team. In the past we didn’t have the skill to get in playoff position early and only had late season success because teams took us lightly. This year it is the exact opposite. Our talent kept us in contention despite no real commitment to a defend first-counter attack style. We are now being exposed by good teams that play a disciplined game (and our not taking us lightly). I would be happy with any one of:
Dave Tippett, Mark Crawford, Randy Carlyle or perhaps Eakins. I hope it happens as roster wise we are much better.

When Burke talks about what the people want though, I think he’s talking primarily about the casual fans who go to games intermittently, but don’t follow the game too closely. Those sorts of fans want exciting hockey; they want goals and dekes and passing off the rush. Those are the fans willing to pay high prices for tickets. Fans like people on these boards don’t give a fuck, we’ll follow the Leafs regardless. But for hte casual fan, run and gun hockey is exciting. Burke essentially rebuilt the fanbase in Vancouver on this model. He gave the city an exciting product and they’re now behind it. Give it a few years and even the retards in your local tim hortons who don’t know shit will be talking as if they’re passionate about the team

Do I feel sorry for Naz? Of course he’s more a Leaf than some, but having said that he is away from this bad situation and can focus on winning.
