The final game of the season series between the Leafs and the Sabres is upon us. For those of us who thought this game would be more meaningful (at the middle of the regular season), well, I guess the joke is on us.

Actually, the game is meaningful to the Sabres, who are chasing the Capitals after their last night’s loss against Steven Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lightning. It’s also relevant to the Leafs because of the draft lottery – that much is obvious.

Each team won all their home games in the season series and the Sabres will likely want to continue that trend in tonight’s game. Given all our injuries and recent form, I wouldn’t advise betting against it.

INJURIES:

With both James Reimer (upper body) and Jonas Gustavsson (lower body) ailing, Ben Scrivens figures to get the start again.  Forwards Joffrey Lupul (shoulder) and Nikolai Kulemin (finger), David Steckel (lower body) and Mikhail Grabovski (leg) are also sidelined for tonight’s game.

The Sabres will be most likely be missing Tyler Myers, fellow defenseman Mike Weber (upper body) and forward Nathan Gerbe (upper body) who are all day-to-day for Buffalo, while defenseman Christian Ehrhoff (knee) and forward Matt Ellis (knee) are out indefinitely.

QUOTE TO NOTE:

“You want to come out and be confident, that’s how I play the game. When I am with the (AHL) Marlies, I am trying to play that same game. It’s not a matter of trying to do one thing or another for a specific situation. I play best when I am at the top of the crease when I am in a good ready stance and when I can play the puck and help the guys break the puck out. The intention was just to play my game.”

- Ben Scrivens

WHO TO WATCH:

Joey Crabb has been my far the most productive Leaf in the season series, scoring two goals and grabbing three assists in the five games played between the two teams. The next top producer is out for tonight’s game (Mikhail Grabovski, 3 goals, 1 assist).

Surprisingly, at least Don Cherry thinks so, Nazem Kadri‘s call up assignment was taken by Joe Colborne. Let’s see how it goes before criticizing it. Also, let’s not fight Brian Burke in a barn, a route which Don is currently going down.

gutless wtf are you talking about, we had a decimated lineup, played a good game and lost against a team that HAD to win and we benefit because we don’t move up much in the standings … have none of you fuckers been watching this team suck for years and consistently either trading away their first round pick or finishing just outside of a decent pick FUCK I feel like I am talking to a bunch of fucken morons

No shit he didn;t turn to the net for a full two seconds he could NOT see the puck. Its also not a penalty shot for having the puck under you in the crease unless you drag it in there.

not pretty to watch but fuck if we get a lottery pick it’s well worth it, we could draft a kid that could be a fucken star for years to come, who cares if we lose to the Sabres in the 3rd last game of ANOTHER lost season

Actually wanting the team you “cheer” for to lose is exactly what I said. Time to realize that it doesn’t happen.

Gutless? How does wanting to actually ice a winning team make him gutless. How about ‘sensible’.

You are the only one making sense ‘long-suffering’…..you’d think your name alone would be enough for them to agree.

I’m going to say this once more, and then I’m going away for a while.
If you lose a game on purpose, you will never play another. If you lose a game for something as ephemeral as a draft pick, you shouldn’t bother playing in the first place. If you think, as a fan, that this team sucks, then you really shouldn’t have any problem trading whatever it takes plus our “shitty” pick to get the first or second overall, both of which are apparently in play. That said, if this team really sucks that bad, bringing a nineteen year old kid in will only teach him how to lose. Is that what you want? The Isles have made a science of it. The Oilers are doing the same. For all their young talent, and you tankers would kill for an Eberle I’m sure, how much good has it done them?

Only showing up to play when there isn’t anything on the line…that’s my definition of gutless. That’s why I want a better team! Fuck this winning at the bottom of the standings….it’s futile! This team has already shown its true colors.

I am done trying to explain this, it should be common sense and the thing about it is there is a lot of guys in this room who have been watching the same reoccurring spiral of doom year after year after year and they still don’t get it, it’s mind boggling
