Leo Koma-(ing to America)-rov?

According Puck Daddy’s Dmitry Chesnokov, it appears that the Maple Leafs are poised to sign 25 year old forward Leo Komarov, their 6th round pick from 2006, to an entry level contract following the World Championships. Last summer, it was believed that the team made a push to sign the young agitator but Komarov respectfully declined, preferring to spend one more season in the KHL. Should these rumors come to fruition, the Leafs will be adding plenty of nastiness and physicality to their bottom six group this fall.

The 5’11 210 pound Estonian born Finn has been honing his craft for the past 3 seasons against men in the KHL. At the NHL level, he likely fits in as a 4th line super pest who offers a high energy, in your face type of game. Komarov is an emotional player upon whom teammates can feed off of. His strengths lie primarily in a speedy, forechecking type of role with the ability to get under his opponents’ skin. He’s an average player in the 5 on 5 setup but is quite effective as an open ice forecheck due to his excellent skating and impressive ability  to recognize and close down open lanes. He absolutely loves to chirp and play really close to the edge, making him an easy target at times for officials. During his time in the Finnish SM-Liiga, he was named the league’s “Most Hated Player” three times.

Through 46 games played for Moscow Dynamo this season, he recorded 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points in. He doesn’t offer much in the way of offense, but if he is able to harness that energy in a positive manner, he should be able to contribute plenty of value to the big club as early as next season. It would not be unreasonable for Komarov to find a niche similar to Jarkko Ruutu.

It’s even funnier that they paid up to acquire him thinking they could beat the system.

just using actual same year salary as cap hit would be nice punishment

That, or not allowing retirement to negate the cap hit.

Cherry said it best, “they were playing, ‘who can be the worst goalie?’” (or something to that affect)

that may be the fairest since they are using that number to average the hit

Hmmm…that’s a good point. Then maybe at that point he’s a 5.33M backup for one year behind some kid that hasn’t been drafted yet.

other than other GMs bein against it, the amnesty deal could include more than just one player, the players shouldnt have anything against it

but wat if his cap hit was the same when he retires at 39, under the amnesty do ya think a deal could be made to buy him out and then resign him to short term at a hometown discount cause ya just paid the guy 30+ mill outright

I didn’t say that an average goalie will turn it on once playoffs start. I might have mentioned that when I was referring to Osgood, but that’s it.

All I know is if we went into the playoffs (and failed, because if it works they would actually have to say something positive and then proceed to sh*t on Burke’s off-season moves and talk about how this impacts ownership or something) with weak goaltending, they would pick on that, and if it was weak centers (or D) they would pick on that. So our only option is to pick one of them (we really haven’t yet) or to try and get both- but who has that (you can argue Pittsburgh did in ’09, but very few teams (in recent years) have had top-flite goaltending and top-flite scorers at center.

I guess it’s hard to argue it when it’s put like that (I think I misinterpreted what you were saying originally when everyone was posting at once and the topic spun off to cover all kinds of stuff).

I think Fleury and the Pens proved this point in round 1.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Komarov makes it. Seen him play live and he knows how to be nasty but wouldn’t expect much fighting of him. He has seen some success recently. Won KHL title with Dynamo this year and was member of 2011 Finnish golden team at WC.
