Morning Mashup: Cooling off the Heat

The Marlies tied up their Western Conference Semifinal series with Abbotsford last night, handing the Heat their first loss in twelve games. Matt Frattin, Korbinian Holzer and Ben Scrivens played especially strong games in a good overall effort by the Marlies to get themselves back on even terms with the series headed to British Columbia for the next three outings.

It was a 5-1 victory earned more on the defensive side of the puck than the scoreline might suggest. The Marlies killed all nine Abbotsford powerplays including a full two minute 5 on 3 kill, and another two abbreviated two man disadvantages. The Heat also outshot the Marlies 38 to 29 as Scrivens won the goaltending battle by a sizable margin over Abbotsford goalie Danny Taylor, who entered last night red hot on a nine-game winning streak.

Talk of the town Jerry D’Amigo had his AHL post season-leading sixth goal in five playoff games. A burgeoning offensive game, his contributions to the AHL’s best penalty kill, and his added speed and size suggest the 21-year-old has a very good chance at earning some NHL appearances next season.

Nazem Kadri meanwhile scored an empty net goal and added two assists. Gardiner had two assists while captain Ryan Hamilton scored a rare powerplay goal on a nifty move to pull the puck out from beside the net and around Taylor.

On paper the slight advantage lies with Abbotsford after earning the split and returning home for three straight home games. However, the Marlies have the edge in talent and clearly had Abbotsford outside of their comfort zone by making them play from behind after the first. Game 3 goes Saturday.

In all fairness, I can understand getting a good hate on for the opposition….can’t stand quite a few teams myself but the minute players from those teams don the Canadian jersey, they become part of my national team and I will cheer them on…..why people can’t separate the two is beyond me.

Hope the Marlies take their game tonight, they really had the heat on their toes in game 2, need more of that intensity in game 3! GO MARLIES GO!

Will be a telling game. If they can maintain the momentum they will have learnt something. If they let the Heat back in then they will have lost their way. Hope Blacker has the fitness to deal with the minutes, want Dallas to keep Nasty & Frats together, and looking for Mueller to really contribute. Jerry keep it going, and Scrivens will need a blinder. I truly hope Dallas stays.

so true. Spezza is the best example for me. I hate the guy but when he plays for team Canada I want him to play well and applaud him when he does.

Was very surprised when Spezza wasn’t added to the team…especially since he really wanted and offered to go. With injuries, I wonder if he’ll be added?

Any news on Komarov? I hope he signs this time. We could really use him on the fourth line with Brown.

Unfortunately, the deeper LA goes into the playoffs….the more expensive Dustin Brown will become….and right now it’s looking like LA may take the Cup. Lombardi will be this years Chiapet.

To be fair, it only seems to be an issue with College players for the most part. As OHL kids would have to go backwards developmentally to play somewhere else to wait out the time. And they’re giving up earning any money in college if that’s the route they choose. And when they do enter the league, they have increased the age at which they will eventually enter UFA status. They are paying a price themselves, whether they see it or not. Not to mention, that I’m sure it affects how teams view them going forward. Maybe for some, who are as hyped as Schultz he’ll get a pass, but this would be a very small minority.

I agree that Gustavsson was awful but Reimer was just as bad, if not worse, for the majority of the season.

Obviously he has the injury excuse, so this season will be really important for him.
