Toronto Marlies 3, Abbotsford Heat 2 – Marlies take series 4-1

Game sheet

The Toronto Marlies continue their playoff march towards the Calder Cup finals after disposing of the Abbotsford Heat in overtime of game 5 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals. Despite not playing a great game, it was good enough to get them the victory. Abbostford were the more desperate of the two teams and it showed—Toronto was down 2-0 during the first period and being outplayed, for the most part.

In the 2nd and 3rd period, The Marlies slowly started to chip away at Abbotsford, and ultimately, it was a game that came down to special teams. The Marlies league leading penalty kill and improving powerplay were too much to for Abbotsford to handle.

The story of the series has been, without a doubt, Ben Scrivens. He was not the goalie that everyone was speaking about coming into the series—it was the red-hot Danny Taylor—but the tables have quickly turned. Scrivens was lights out the entire series and, despite only being halfway to the Calder Cup finals, his play is going to give the big club brass a lot to think about. Ben Scrivens has the Marlies record at 7-1 and his save percentage is: .955. Simply staggering.

The Marlies will either face the Oklahoma City Barons (Edmonton Oilers), who finished 1st overall in the Western Conference and ahead of the Marlies or the San Antonio Rampage (Florida Panthers) who finished  in the 6th place in the regular season, in a matchup for the Western Conference Finals.

Probably Frattin due to his incumbent status and the fact that D’Amigo could still benefit with a bit more time down on the Marlies. He’s impressed me the second half of the season and the post season though…

I only ask because of D’amigo’s ability to do work on the PK very efficiently. He looks alot like something the Detroit Red Wings would draft, that kid.

Agreed. Rest is great but too much rest and a team could cool down. I hope it doesn’t go to 7 games.

Could have I don’t recall to be honest. It always seems the team that keeps playing seems to be more “in the groove” while the one that had the break seems off at least for a bit.

He has shown promise but his offensive game could still use some seasoning. No need to rush. Besides, Kadri is still ahead of him on the depth chart and we have guys that can work the PK already, no?

I know Scott wont loll. But D’amigo could be a surprise i think out of camp. He brings alot of intangibles our team could use down the stretch. Whether or not that translates to the NHL we’d have to see. Could be our new, more offensively gifted Alyn MacCauley. Anybody remember Mac and Roberts rippin the playoffs that one year with Sundin out? Whatta show.

Will really have to wait to see what moves are made in the offseason to be able to predict how many of the Marlies can make the big club. As of right now there isn’t a lot of room.

For sure Kads makes the team. I feel like there may be quite the amount of bodies moved this offseason (at the draft) though. Ala, MacArthur, Kulemin (hopefully not), Connolly, Army, Lombardi etc. I think their may be room at the end of the day for 2 of Fratts, Migo and Kadri.

I have my doubts. I think the roster will be full of guys that have a proven NHL history (including frats). D’Amigo and Kadri will get chances when injuries arise.

I’m wondering how many of the Marlies could become trade bait, or more likely, add ons to trades. If they keep winning they’ll get noticed more by other clubs. Talking mostly about Scott, Wilson, Zigomanis, Acton and guys like them. I hope to keep as many of the younger guys with high potential as possible.

I’ve seen the leafs win four cups and I have to say I don’t think I’ve ever seen this much interest in the teams AHL club. For me, it stems from Burke wanting the Marlies to have the same goals for success as the parent club, and not just using them as a holding tank for prospects.

I have high hopes for D’amgio but if you look at the roster there is just no room this year. We have 7 forwards on exp contracts this coming year. So next year seems probable. RC seemed to love Crabb, Still have to find Spots for Kadri and Frattin. Koromov, if he comes, armstrong could bounce back etc.

Stats say Frattin has 19 goals in 31 AHL games.

I agree it would be nice to keep those high potential guys but if we realistically want to trade for a #1C or a starter without an albatross contract some are probably going to be moved.
The only thing I know is that I can’t wait for the offseason. Looking like it will be an exciting one.

Maybe. What’s good for the Marlies should be good for the Leafs in the future. Of course most of the guys playing there wont have a big role on the big club. Some will and having success while they are young and developing there is a huge positive and I think that has captured everyone’s interest as well.

Agreed. So long as we’re getting value for value it’s good. I can’t stand the thought of giving up youth for older vets like we have in the past though.

Also I’m pretty sure Wilson and Acton are signed to AHL contracts so can’t be traded by Burke.
My guess for top trade chips on the marlies is Mueller and Rynnas

Bah. I kind of mashed my thoughts there. I obviously agree with you you as I posted much the same thing LOL but more specifically I meant I think it’s the excitement brought on by the promise of some of the young guys down there that has piqued interest in the team as a whole

Our PK was excellent in the second half of the season. It most certainly could be worse.

I have officially decided to ignore half season stats from now on. Half a season with Reimer last year and the first half of the season in a playoff spot this year has ruined it for me………. but I agree lol
