The Marlies train keeps on rolling

The Marlies kept on marching in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals despite a significant layoff after a quick second round series win against Abbotsford. Call them the Los Angeles Kings of the AHL post season; they’re now 8-1 in the playoffs and it seems to matter little whether they’re playing at home or away. Not that the atmospheres in Abbotsford or Oklahoma City were intimidating (unless you suffer from seatophobia), but Marlies are perfect 5-0 on the road after last night’s 5-0 win.

Ben Scrivens recorded his second shutout of the playoffs and again he worked for the win, stopping all 31 shots. Scrivens has posted the best numbers of any goaltender in the AHL playoffs (8-1, 1.43 GAA, .951 SV%) and he’s done it while facing no shortage of pucks. Fitting in line with Burke‘s organizational philosophy, or at least his original organizational philosophy, the Marlies play an aggressive game, offensively and defensively, and are showing us the possibilities when you pair that with top notch goaltending and a stymying penalty kill. With Carlyle behind his bench Burke appears to have made an adjustment at the big league level in the direction of a more defensive focus – looking at the NHL playoffs this year, probably a smart idea – but it’s exciting stuff to watch nonetheless.

The Marlies continue to get contributions from up and down the lineup, including a goal from an unlikely source in 2012, Joe Colborne. From what I saw the injured Colborne spent a lot of time on the fourth line with Will Acton and Jay Rosehill but found himself on the ice with Dupuis and Kadri and bulged the twine for the first time since February 17.

The line of Kadri, Frattin and D’Amigo was irresistable throughout, scoring once but deserving a few more. Frattin’s sixth – another wrist shot from the circle, his shot is on the money at the moment – puts him into a tie with Jerry D’Amigo for the AHL playoff scoring lead.

The players you hope would look a cut above the rest have looked exactly that in these playoffs for the Marles, with the exception of Colborne, who can be excused on account of what looks to be a hindering injury. Frattin looked like he could do as he pleased with the puck last night, Kadri (two assists) was everywhere, and Jake Gardiner scored on a beautiful individual effort where he spun his wheels to squeak by a check on the boards and took it out front for a backhand finish. In addition to Frattin, Kadri and Gardiner (the three you would hope stand out, and have), Jerry D’Amigo can be added to the list and of course, Scrivens, who is simply the best AHL goaltender going.

Continued contributions from Marcel Mueller and Nicolas Deschamps, who each scored and assisted last night, gives them seven points apiece in the playoffs, providing some quality secondary scoring to the Marlie attack. Add Dupuis’ name in there as well as the three played together and posted two points each. Dupuis now has eight in nine post season games.

Can the Marlies stay perfect on the road and gain a 2-0 series lead before heading home for three games? We’ll find out soon enough as Game 2 goes tonight at 8 p.m (Leafs TV).

That’s true, I think we all can agree that we want to see the most dominant phil kessel can be, hope he continues to do what has given him success. I just hope Burke can help insulate phil with some other top talent that’ll help him improve . Gonna be an interesting off season

Thinking about all the possible players we can acquire has me excited for this summer. While I like the idea of possibly adding players like Stastny/Luongo/Getzlaf if they become available, I’m not sold on Nash. Not at all.

7.8m is a lot of money for a 60-70 point guy. With a contract that takes him to 35 years old and no guarantee that he’ll ever be a dominant offensive force again, I’d rather Burke stay away, especially if Nash costs us our 1st + Kadri or something similar.

Ok…I’ve read enough of this shit.

“Milk bag” “can be an elite player”? You’re retarded if you think he’s not in fantastic shape. You wanna look at some photos and decide he’s not in shape? Go ahead, you’re making an ass of yourself.

You’d probably prefer some ripped guy like Nash putting up 75% of the numbers at 2.5M more. But hey…as long as he looks good in pictures…right?

Dammit guys, he cost us all those draft picks. He needs to step up and look like a toned athlete, one that we should have mortgaged our future on. You have to remember 70% is about how you look, 20% is about what the media thinks and 10% is about substance.. :) #Thriller is King.

im not questioning kessel’s abilities, hes proven to be effective in whatever shape he is in right now….I’m just saying it would be nice of he could shed that “crispy cream” nickname so eloquently given to him by so many leaf “fans”. I want him, as everyone else here does, to achieve his maximum potential.

You can’t underestimate how much playing on such a terrible team affects a player of Nash’s level, literally every team that plays the bluejackets comes in and targets nash as there game plan because there’s no one else they have to worry about. After all the shit he went trough with people saying he’s a terrible captain and he’s not helping his team win and he was so bad this season he still scored 30 goals.if you put him on a line with kessel he would open up so much room for kess and vise versa, nash would become a top five winger in the game…he’d be like lupul on horse steroids

Really, how terrible is that team? Why can he not play well with that group? He had Jeff Carter, he had Antoine Vermette – both of whom are playing top six minutes on teams in the conference finals. He also had Umberger and Brassard. These are not Joey Crabb’s and Darryl Boyce’s – they’re quality NHL players that a guy making 7.8 million per year should be able to make look even better than they are. He had Fedor Tyutin and Marc Methot on the back-end – two guys chosen to represent their country internationally. Even if depth is poor, there has been enough talent in CLB that his performance should never be as shit as it was this year.

It says a lot that Vermette looks better next to Doan, and Carter next to Richards.

slow down there boss, im sorry if i somehow offended you when I was talking about phil kessel but if you read a couple more posts you’d see ive given him full marks for what he has done and the obvious skill level he has. I’d expect nothing less then top physical shape from well paid athletes, its obvious im not the only one on here who thinks kessel could still improve his fitness level.

Only part that throws me is when people say things like “he could show he’s an elite player”. He IS an elite player. He was top 5 in the league. If he played in any other market, he would be considered God-like; completely off-limits….like we do with every decent player on every other team, lol.

Ya I agree, he potted 82 points after all. I guess cause he doesn’t fit the typical “jacked” hockey player body type people always feel as if their is something more that he can do to give him that little more edge.

Some guys no matter how much they work out just look chubby and can’t shed that last bit of body fat. My dad and I are prime examples. He was a courier for something like 5 years. Big dude and built like a truck. He could outlast guys half his size who actually worked out and ran. He was always on the thick side, even in his High school photos when he was on the Rugby. Football and Wrestling team. He just couldn’t drop enough weight to look like a Stamkos or Brindamour.
Even now I’m 5’9 170 lbs but you’d think I’m almost 200 looking at me. I’m also one of the more fit guys you’d find.

A lot of the best players aren’t in that mold though. He’s the about the same size as Sidney Crosby, Steven Stamkos Dustin Brown, Zach Parise, and bigger (and likely in better shape from the stories I hear) than Claude Giroux, and the likes of Mike Richards, the Sedins (though he is shorter), Marty St.Louis.
    -
Honestly, I think it’s kind of a case of the fan base knowing we’re lacking that kind of player, and taking it out on Kessel in the mean time. Maybe he could be in better shape – I don’t know. I do know, that he doesn’t NEED to be better shape to out-perform Nash, Lecavalier, Getzlaf, and other behemoths we seem to adore based on physique…
    -
I’m guility of it too though, truth be told. There is something appealing about having a team of giants like LA has. Not necessary though.

Dangle: Never for one minute did I take your posts negatively. I just wanted to be a “smart-ass” and post something sarcastically funny. Apologies for my sense of humor, nothing was directed at you or Bboy or anyone on this site, it was a dig at the haters. Personally, I trust Phil to be where he needs to be. When athletes start doing things outside of their comfort zone, problems can arise. As long as Thriller has the speed and the wrister (and now the vision for “assists”), life is good.

well put, guess ive been watching too much LA kings hockey lately lol….they do have a team of monsters over there. It seems as if the predominant talk around here is about size, strength and physicality which as this past season proved, we need more of. Carlyle did mention on occasion that he expected kessel (as well as the majority of the roster) to improve their conditioning level as his new system was gonna require a higher fitness level to play effectively.

If you’re not sold on Nash getting 60-70 points for 7.8, how will you feel about Stastny at 6.6 and getting 50plus, or even better, Getzlaf getting 11 goals for 5.5, and only for one more year. I’m not a Nash fan either but at least he is a consistent 30 plus goal scorer, has a big body presence and can move for his size, something Getzlaf can’t. He would probably be our best and most talented player since Sundin and if all it costs is our first and Kadri then i think Burke would be crazy not to do it. Nash has at least 8 good years left i believe, and the 5th this year is a crapshoot like the rest of the first round, and although many in here have a love affair with Kadri , i will be surprised if he sees a game with the Leafs.I can’t think of a player the Leafs have drafted in the last ten years(or more) that is a better player than Nash.

Also, Getzlaf had been a better than PPG player for multiple seasons before this year. In fact, he makes Nash’s prior accomplishments seem weak when you consider their previous work.

And if Burke was going to deal Kadri, he would have already done it to try and salvage the season. I think he was sincere in wanting to keep the young talent and let it develop and grow.
