Morning Mashup: Calder Cup Finals

Niklas Lidstrom officially retired yesterday

The Marlies will take to the ice today in pursuit of the Calder Cup, against a Norfolk Admirals team that has stampeded through the AHL over the last few months.  Toronto will be without some of its most potent offensive weapons, as Matt Frattin has joined Nazem Kadri and Mike Zigomanis on the injured list.  As such, Ben Scrivens and Toronto’s defensive effort will have to come up big against an Admirals team that features a number of scoring threats.

Elsewhere in the hockey universe, Nicklas Lidstrom announced his retirement, to the dismay of hockey fans everywhere (seriously, have you ever met someone that doesn’t like this Swedish legend?).  As Matt accurately predicted, there are already a number of career retrospectives on the internets, with many touching on the (admittedly selfish) disappointing notion that we won’t get to see #5 work the Red Wings blueline anymore.  It’s a presence that the game will truly miss.

With respect to the Leafs, it’s unfortunate that Lidstrom won’t be featured in the upcoming 24/7 series between the two Original Six franchises.  He leaves a large hole on the ice and in the dressing room, and it will definitely be interesting to see how the Detroit organization goes about filling this during the summer.

Lidstrom’s effect on the ice has been nearly unparalleled in history due to his excellence in all facets of the game.  While the Leafs will likely never be blessed with such a talent, one would think that Toronto’s promising young blueliner, Jake Gardiner, will see success at the NHL level through a style of play that is similar to the Red Wings captain.  The requisite high-end offensive capabilities and vision are certainly there, as is the skating ability.  Like Lidstrom, Gardiner will never look to crush opponents in the defensive end or seek to dominate the other team physically.  This is not to say that either player shies away from contact, but Nicklas Lidstrom excelled defensively with positioning, smarts, and an active stick.

It is in this area of defensive wiles and veteran experience that Gardiner has much to learn.  For non-superhuman defensemen like Gardiner, this will be a process that takes years of maturation and exposure to many big game scenarios, such as tonight’s Calder Cup Finals.

Seriously Net Salary Cap vs. Gross Salary Cap is the best idea I’ve ever heard. Think about it, if Florida offers a player a 1M dollar contract he walks away with 1M dollars, if Montreal offered the same player a 1M dollar contract he would walk away with $760,000. Thats a lot of money to consider after a year. I have to assume that some players are going to US teams because of this.
In a Net Salary Cap world a 1M dollar contract would pay the player 1M every time.
It just makes too much sense to me.

And even then, Dion was 24, could be traded to any team in the league since he didn’t have any clauses, and played a position that all 29 other teams are always looking to upgrade.

I think there could be a way to have only a 30 – 45 second tape delay, not an hour. With a savy producer cutting out line changes and stoppages to gain back any 30 second commercial break. Or they could just sell 15′s on hockey games. I don’t really need to see the 30 second Tims commercial 20 times a game.

It would shock the shit out of me! No way Vancouver has that much leverage in this deal. The guy wants out, but he has a NTC and is signed long term for a big cap hit. If Burke sends our 5th off for Luongo, then I’m through with this whole being a Leafs fan crap until he’s gone. It would be proof that nothing truly positive can possibly be accomplished during his tenure.

Yes, it’s a fantastic idea, but I’m not sure the NHL is in the business of helping Canadian markets.

Fine line here. Either those franchises fold then (you can’t relocate all of them to Canada) and you lose that many jobs for your union, or they have to lower the cap floor so that they can survive, in which case you lower the earning potential of a large portion of your union. These guys need to get realistic.

But I could see the PA bringing it up as a way to increase revenue for their agents.

That’s because they always choose to take the max increase in Cap so the new contracts basically get subsidized by the old ones. They have only themselves to blame.

Raising the maximum of $2,500 for player fines. As well as possibly allowing for the appeals process for suspensions to include an outside arbitrator. Or at the very least to allow for someone from the NHLPA to sit on the board at the hearing. As it stands right now, taking a grievance to Bettman over a Shanahan created penalty seems nothing more than perfunctory in its effectiveness.

An army of Marlies at morning skateNp but no Zigomanis or Kadri. Ashton or Mueller likely off injured list for Game 1.

exactly. The salary cap is only an estimate. They need to have the season play out so they Know exactly what it was and then adjust all salaries paid that year by the % of sort fall to the cap.
