Quick Hits: Eakins here for another year, the Vokoun ship sails early

In an exciting bit of news earlier this afternoon, the Maple Leafs extended Dallas Eakins’ contract as the head coach of the Marlies. Why in the middle of the Calder Cup Finals? The timing is such that the contract is both an endorsement of the head coach with his team down 2-0 in their series against Norfolk and a reward for his work behind the bench this season, win or lose.

The reupping of Dallas Eakins for three-years does not guarantee Eakins will remain Marlies head coach for the duration of the contract, but it does mean the fear of him leaving for NHL opportunity elsewhere is alleviated for one season. At least for another year, it saves our ears from the debate about whether or not Eakins should’ve been handed the job over Randy Carlyle back in March.

On his NHL readiness, Marlies GM Dave Nonis told Lance Hornby: ”We’re not going to hold someone back (from NHL), but he’ll tell you he still has a lot to learn.”

For another year at least, the Leafs have the best case scenario in terms of their coaching situation, with Eakins still in the organization developing players and the much more experienced Carlyle running the big club. You can bet the contract Eakins just signed is handsomer than most AHL head coaching contracts. In times like these you can appreciate the benefits the deep pockets of MLSE affords the hockey team when it comes to non-capped personnel.  If the Leafs manage to come through this off-season down just Rick Dudley, they’re doing better than alright at keeping their collection of highly-regarded brain trust in Toronto. Keep putting the best people in charge and do everything in your power to keep them aboard; it’s bound to reap benefits eventually.

Elliotte Friedman has an interesting quote concerning Eakins’ eagerness to learn before taking the next step, and how the management team’s inclusion of Eakins in all facets of the organization’s hockey operations has been and continues to be a good learning process for him.

The other Leafs-related news today came in the trade and sign of goaltender Tomas Vokoun by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Vokoun, as confirmed by legitimate insiders like Bob Mckenzie and James Mirtle, was indeed willing to come to Toronto if Burke was interested in making a trade for his rights now rather than waiting until he hit unrestricted free agency. Signing a two-year deal with Pittsburgh, he could’ve been a middle ground solution between pursuing a name like Luongo and sticking with their young goalies in Scrivens and Reimer.

It appears Burke was not interested in deciding the team’s goaltending future this early into the off-season. The reasons as to why that is could be speculated on all day; maybe he didn’t want to add another goaltender without RFA Scrivens’ situation decided first, maybe his main focus is indeed on trading for Roberto Luongo… maybe he didn’t want to tie up any of his cap with a free agent target(s) in mind. Maybe he wasn’t interested in Vokoun at all.

Update: Elliotte Friedman reports the Leafs were not interested in Vokoun on a two-year deal.

If the plan is to pursue an experienced goalie through free agency, the best fish in the sea just got scooped up.

I watch the Kings and get angry. If ownership had a clue we would be there. So much short term ism, stupid trading potential for old vets that couldn’t bring the promise. Our player development has been lacking for decades. The cupboard bare and the promise of the big club waning. Toronto the mighty embarrassed by its own ineptitude. Took a Burkie and a shift away from the meddlesome attitude of the owners to get us back on track. Wow, what might have been if the Leafs had been run properly .

Don’t forget that they’ll raise the Cup with Gagne. That’s three players who were on their team the last time they made it to the SCF.

Imagine if we could have moved even two of the Muskoka 5. *sigh*

Actually that’s my point. And if kessel pushes someone out of the top six Lupul’s probably on the third line.

Just got fired by the Brandon Wheat Kings. Not a pretty situation either.

Well, then so did Lidstrom. Except Detroit had enough class not to ask their leader to leave some draft picks in his final years. No-class move by Cliff. Crap on another captain, just like they did with Sittler and Keon.

When’s the last time that the second lowest scoring team in the regular season won the cup? Gotta tip the hat to the Kings for pulling their shit together when it mattered most. They could have fallen apart like a team we could mention, but won’t. They deserve the cup this year.

Yeah, I know what you’re saying. But I look at how Lidstrom was treated, how Sundin should have been treated, and the whole Muskoka 5 myth makes me puke. Management turned on their players when the players wouldn’t tear up their contracts after management screwed up the team with their front office ineptitude and expected guys like Sundin to make it better for them. If management wanted to turn those players into picks, they should have paid them more in place of no- trade deals. And Cliff, the guy who brought you Jeff Finger at over $3 million a season, would have screwed up the picks anyway. Or JFJ, with his Jiri Tlusty first rounder when he could have grabbed a guy like Lucic.

No wonder players gravitate toward teams like the Wings. Rant over!

Kessel, Phaneuf, Gardiner?… maybe kulemin or frattin in place of penner? That is pretty pathetic, but thats comparing our team to one that has lost two games in the playoffs thus far, swept st. louis, and may be able sweep the stanley cup finals. I’m pretty sure you’d be pretty hard pressed to find more than three or four guys that could make L.A. from most teams.

Yeah, that was the point of the question. … Someone was fantasizing that if leafs had done more to get into eighth place they would have been kicking butt like the Kings. But truth is Kings had a crappy start but had way more pieces in place and were able to pick up four players and a new coach in order to turn it around. they’re further down the development road than Toronto. And just saying, I don’t at this point if Gardner could crack the Kings D right now. I’m sure they’d love to have him in coming years. Same with Frattin. Kulie would be a long shot.

Except that Sundin was intending to continue playing past that year. And his team wasn’t a perennial playoff contender like the Wings-which meant they wanted to keep their stars-, but was on a downward spiral-which necessitated them being able to move their stars to facilitate a rebuild.

Thanks for the Clouston link btw.

Factor that and the fact theres 4 series not three, and the first round back then was 5 games. (Could be wrong tho) . Not to mention LA is an “8th” placed team who took out #1, #2 + #3 if im correct about phx… thats pretty nucking futs. Kinda wish they played the rags, so they could slay another #1 seed but o well. >.<.
