Shane Doan to test free agency

Some free agency news this evening, presented without comment:

He’s been associated with the Phoenix Coyotes (ne Winnipeg Jets) franchise for so long that no one could see this coming. But general manager Don Mahoney confirmed on NHL Radio on Tuesday that team captain Shane Doan will test the free agent market starting on Sunday.

Doan, 35, has spent every one of his 17 seasons with Winnipeg/Phoenix and is the only remaining Coyote to have been a Jet. He is coming off a five-year, $22.75 million contract, and his 50 points (22 goals) was his lowest output in 10 seasons.

Doan is considered one of hockey’s best leaders (he is a two-time captain of Team Canada at the world championships), and another franchise might be willing to overlook his sliding production to add the intangibles he brings to its locker room. He has 318 goals and 788 points in 1198 games.

    I wouldn’t be concerned over hockey insider’s twitter rumour, Burke isn’t going to get sucked into that kind of trade.

    What does everyone think of acquiring Steve Ott from Dallas? He is a mean SOB and is the kind of player people hate to play against. I personally would love to see him on this team, I suspect there are quite a few teams in the East interested in him if Dallas decides to move him and his 2 yrs and 2.95m this summer.

    Dont worry bud. This is BS. I’m no fan of the job burkes done, but he’s not this stupid. Maybe this desparate though? I could see, with JVR he figures he can move one of lupul or kulemin, especially if he thinks he can’t sign both long term. Burke also likes Raymond. Hmmmm maybe I could see this happening dammit. Best part will be seeing everyone change their tune post deal to how great it is.
