Notes from Leafs Prospect Development Camp
Share

@416_Musings has been taking in Leafs Prospect Camp and has posted a few notes over at his site, Draft Schmaft.

Morgan Rielly: As advertised. Competes with Tony Cameranesi for best skater award at camp. A multi-directional skater who gives the impression of his skates barely touching the ice surface. His pivots are smooth and effortless and Rielly has great lateral mobility. Rielly showed great hockey sense and vision in where he places himself, how he navigates through bodies, and how he chooses to attack the offensive zone. As Jim Hughes stated, his passes are hard and quick and in my opinion – at the pro-level. Rielly also sought out and found open lanes before shooting…enough about offence…what surprised me most was how well he played defence. His anticipation of plays created turnovers and he advanced the puck forward. In his own zone, Rielly showed patience as his slick turns kept defenders at bay. Rielly’s speed allows him to regain position in his own zone to handle one-on-one plays. After Stuart Percy, Rielly may have played the best defence today.

Tyler Biggs: The greatest improvement in Biggs’ play could be attributed to the skating work he has put in over the past month. Biggs seems to have more explosiveness and his diagonal cuts were sharp. Biggs found open ice for himself on several occasions. His wrist shot did not hit the net but had some heat to it. Played a physical game which should come as no surprise to anyone.

Notes on Tony Cameranesi, Dennis Robertson, Eric Knodel and David Wolf are available over at Draft Schmaft.

@CanuckintheUK Your last sentence says it all! Unfortunately the correct way to win a hockey championship is to tank for five years like edmonton, however the egotist knows that he has about a five year life span in toronto and tries to do it on the fly. This never works! This is the leafs big problem. Now we have guys like kadri instead of stamkos.

I heard Kesler has entered the diving competitions at the Olympics. But they told him he cant bring his hockey stick with him. Most of his teammates will be trying to qualify as well.

@CanuckintheUK I would highly doubt his wife would want to move. Don’t get me wrong, he’d be a great pick up for us. Bozak + prospect ? I’d do it only if we find another 1C. Fisher doesn’t replace Bozak imo.

Fisher ? never going to happen...

@CanuckintheUK Young players get too much for too long. For example Suter deal is brutal but he has a good chance to justify it as he is now their best D by far. On the other hand Koivu is my favourite C so I am happy he finally has some talent around him. I think it will depend on our management, if they see the Marlies Dmen ready for the big show. If it is only Holzer, then I doubt it. If it is Holzer, Fraser+ then it can happen. The Flames would like to ship Bouwmeester away so it could be the factor also. But just my opinions.

Carle to TB? Philly lost another solid player. With their questionable goaltending if a bad injury happens they may become a bubble team.

Eww, as much as the move would make sense, eff no to Torres. Dude is a dirty prick. Im biased being that my 2nd favorite team is Chicago and that im a big fan of Hossa since he's played there...but no, even in Vancouver, just a soulless ginger...(my best friend is ginger...most of them have souls!), but not Torres, that dudes a douchebag.

I'd be alright with Connolly playing the wing on the "shutdown line" with McClement and Kulemin, but I just don't see a spot for Lombardi on the Leafs roster.
Make him the #3 centre with the Marlies behind Colborne and Zigomanis!

@JVR That might be exactly what would happen but before that happens I’m sure Burke will be trying to get him another job in the NHL, I bet he hates sending guys down…

Does anybody else think Gillis isn’t getting any substantial offers for Luongo, so he is waiting to see if there is an Amnesty Clause in the new CBA??

@Cameron I would agree. Niemi is a solid goalie. Plus we would save some assets to use in other trades.

Even though I already posted what I think will happen this offseason, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kadri with the Marlies to start the season, withConnolly playing on the wing with Kulemin and McClement and Frattin playing with Grabovski and JVR.

Yup and both Grabovski and Kadri are feisty players that piss of the other team.
It's just too bad they didn't have JVR's size, haha.

Kadri becoming a legit top 6 NHL player would be huge for the leafs. He has all the skill in the world, Im just not sure of he is smart enough. He needs to improve his skating quite a bit too, start working on his core.
