More contract craziness

"Yeah? Check this out"

Get ready to hear about nothing but Shea Weber for the next six days. And rightfully so. After inking what will be the biggest contract for a defenceman in league history on an offer sheet with Philadelphia, Weber’s The Man in the hockey world right now.

Apparently this whole thing developed after a few attempts at a trade for Weber, in which the Flyers eventually said “enough of that, here’s a spaceship full of money.”

Now David Poile has to make a decision on whether he wants to basically flatten his team or match the offer. We wanted hockey news, Paul Holmgren delivered, again.

Does this relate to the Leafs? Some fans raised the question about whether Toronto should have been in on Weber as well. As much as the Leafs could use extra help on the blueline, I guess they didn’t see it as enough of a priority to go and spend $110 million and four first round picks on. I’m indifferent.

This does relate to the Leafs in that a team in the East potentially becomes more dangerous, while the landscape in the West, and particularly the Central, has changed quite dramatically in the last little while. Did I have the Leafs passing the Flyers in the standings this coming season? No. But you still don’t want to see elite players jumping in to your conference.

It’s a monstrous move that’s given us a lot to talk about until this comes to some sort of resolution. And after the fact, it could pave the way for other big transactions to take place. Hopefully there’s some more shuffling soon before I lose my mind thinking about what the Leafs are going to do to fix their own mess.

Bozak seems like a happy-go-lucky sort. But yeah we’ve got an article on the official website about potential #1′s, we’ve got $6 mil second line centre and we just brought in a 3rd line guy…
    And Timmy!

Just a really fucked up way for management to handle it IMO. I can imagine wanting to play here.

I still don’t really get our lineup at all.

so the article says Burke wants Bozak to play a bottom 6 role. But he signed McClement to be the 3rd line centre. So Bozak is going to play wing on the 3rd line? Not exactly truculant.

I just dont get this team. We have some solid pieces but not the right mix AT ALL. Obviously Burke has stated he wants to improve via trade but here we are and its getting close to August and he hasnt really done anything and the closer you get to the season the less likely anything substantial will happen.

So risky. Can you imagine if any of the contenders fail? That line was the only thing that kept the team afloat.

Barring a significant trade I’d like to see Bozak start on the first line and eventually move to the third, keep McLement on the fourth.
And Kadri and Colborne can decide between them who earns the top spot.
Steckle can go and sO can Connolly.

I like Bozak on both ends of the ice. And he makes some unreal breakout passes to Kessel and Lupul.

Thats the only thing I can think of as well. the alternative is for Kadri, Van and Colborne to play wing with Colborne and Kadri being waiver exempt as well.

Since this was a basically official Leafs post perhaps its also letting teams with centers available know the Leafs do have a plan B so they are not desperate for a center.

How long has Bozak been in the league? 2 1/2 years? He was one of our best forwards last year.

Kadri later took blame for that by admitting he tried to take a short cut in weight gain by over eating; not really getting that not all weight is good weight.
