After adding Dylan Yeo and Keith Aucoin last week (who have three Calder Cup championships between them), the Marlies have brought back Mike Zigomanis on a one-year deal. Dave Nonis is certainly loading up the AHL affiliate for another run. The Marlies also signed Will Acton, who was an effective fourth liner for them last season.

Acton and Zigomanis are both back on AHL deals, meaning they do not take up any Standard Player Contract slots.

From the Marlies:

A proud member of the American Hockey League, the Toronto Marlies announced Monday that the team has re-signed forwards Mike Zigomanis and Will Acton, as well as signed free agent defenceman Dylan Yeo to one-year contracts, respectively.

Zigomanis, 31, appeared in 68 regular season games with the Marlies in 2011-12. The 6-0, 200-pound Toronto, Ontario native led the Marlies in scoring this past season, registering 61 points (19 goals, 42 assists). Zigomanis also skated in 13 Calder Cup Playoff games, recording six points (four goals, two assists) and 10 penalty minutes. In two seasons with the Marlies, Zigomanis has accumulated 108 points in 132 games.

Acton, 25, played 69 regular season games with the Marlies last season, recording 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) with 58 penalty minutes. The 6-2, 190-pound Stouffville, Ontario native also tallied two points (one goal, one assist) in 17 playoff games for Toronto this past season. Prior to signing with the Marlies as a free agent in 2010-11, Acton played four seasons at Lake Superior State University.

Yeo, 26, skated in 48 AHL regular season games with the Oklahoma City Barons in 2011-12, posting 13 points (five goals, eight assists) and 37 penalty minutes. The 5-11, 210-pound Prince Albert, Saskatchewan native also played in 14 playoff games with Oklahoma City last season, registering eight points (one goal, seven assists). Yeo has appeared in 102 career AHL games and 174 ECHL games. In 2008-09, Yeo was named the ECHL’s Defenceman of the Year while playing for the Victoria Salmon Kings.

Count on Lupul. Count on him getting an A. And Kadri makes the team or gets traded. Additions to the roster are additions.

Mature and Van Halen. Ya lost me. ;-) . Van Halen is about fun and general teenage idiocy for me.

And Van Hagar lost me with the line. Only time will tell us if we pass the fast of time. They did do a Pepsi commercial and a great girl in a cowboy outfit video. Have that one in the spank bank.

Damn autocorrect won’t let me change a thing.

Correction, subtracting Schenn in order to add JVR makes the Leafs a better team.
Simply subtracting Schenn would make the Leafs a worse team.

    top 5 wishlist

    5. phaneuf stops missing the net
    4. kessel grows a pair
    3. leafs can clear their zone
    2. truck doesn’t fly off cliff

    1. consistency.

BIG IF but if lupul kessel progress on last season and jvr experiment works, grabo kuli can regain 2 season ago touch, get rid of dead weight and our prospects break out including reimz/scrivz not only can we make the playoffs but we could be looking at sustained success which would finally attract some elite talent.. Fingers crossed

Kessel and Grabo got the As with Army and Komi out…

Does Carlyle strip one of them to give Lupul an A? Maybe, but who knows. Liles would also be a good candidate.

I’m on the wait n see train for the rest of the summer. Burkes no dummy and I’m thinking he’s just sitting back shaking his head at all the cash being thrown around these days. Might be quiet right now but I think this period is of benefit to us in the not too distant future. I’ve got my optimist goggles on tonight. Go Leafs.

If subtracting Schenn made the Leafs a better team, he’d have been a healthy scratch much more often, obviously. The coach has to ice the best lineup they can on any given night, and 79/82 games last season, that lineup included Luke Schenn.

If he was actually negative to have in the lineup, he wouldn’t have been in it. It’s common sense. He played more games than Franson and Komi. He was higher on the depth chart than them. If Schenn made the team worse, they did too, even more so than him.

How so? The forward group improved, but the D got worse. We already had Kessel, Lupul, MacArthur, and Kuli/Kadri/Frattin for top 6 wing spots. JVR should definitely help us, but how much? Meanwhile, our already lacking D corps lost a player. And now the D corps is very one-sided.

Phaneuf, Gunnar, Liles, Gardiner and Franson are our 5 best dmen. 3 offensive guys, 1 defensive guy, and 1 two-way guy. The only defensive dman, Gunnarsson, is soft. Phaneuf is the only one the brings any sort of real physicality. Franson could improve in that area, but the key word there is “could”.

Komi and Holzer are similar players to Schenn on terms of style, but Komi is worse and is very overpaid, and Holzer has one NHL game under his belt. Neither should have to be relied upon to replace Schenn.

In the long run, JVR is probably a top 6 winger, and Schenn a top 4 dman. In the short run, we have improved one area while weakening another. It’s a pretty lateral move, that’s why it was a straight-up trade. Unfortunately for us, JVR costs more and has had significant injury trouble recently.

That’s fine and all, but it goes both ways. You can’t just say that having Holzer in for Schenn saves money on the nack end and just completely ignore that if we just left Kadri or Frattin in the spot JVR will now be in, we’d be saving money up front…

JVR is better than Kadri and Frattin right now, but Schenn is better than Holzer. At least Kadri and Frattin have some NHL experience and aren’t just raw rookies.

Schenn can be just as much of a difference maker as JVR. JVR has played a sheltered role and gotten PP time with great players, but still has only put up high-end third line numbers. He’s not a legitimate top 6 forward yet.

Is Schenn a legitimate top 4 dman yet? No, but at least he played like it in 10/11. JVR has been more consistent from year to year, but Schenn’s best season was better than JVR’s best season, so they have shown about the same at the NHL level.

The bias towards JVR now that he is a Leaf is outstanding. Yes, Holzer being in the lineup over Schenn saves money. But it doesn’t matter, because Kadri or Frattin being in the lineup over JVR would save money too… and at least they have some NHL experience, they aren’t raw rookies.
