Tracking Penalties
Share

I plead guilty to writing far too many CBA posts in the past few weeks. This week I’m happily returning to a Leafs topic and looking at last season’s penalties.

Finding who took a penalty and who drew a penalty can be found on behindthenet.ca, but I wanted to look at the penalties in specific situations. So I when through the 82 box scores from last season and put together this handy dandy spreadsheet for fans of pivot tables to enjoy. If you’d rather have the Executive Summary, you’ll find some interesting facts listed below.

When the Leafs Fight?
Last season the Leafs fought 8 times when they were leading, 16 times when they were losing, and 11 times when the game was tied. In the case where the game was tied Mike Brown was the team leader in fights, but when the Leafs were ahead Luke Schenn was the leader with 4 fights. No other player had more than one when the Leafs were leading. Also interesting is that the Leafs had a 13-17-5 record in games that fought in.

Penalties Taken/Drawn in Wins and Losses:

W L OTL SOL
Taken 105 114 19 10
Drawn 131 113 18 16
Grand Total 236 227 37 26

Very little surprise here. When the Leafs win they draw more penalties, when the lose they take more. I guess we can consider Shootout losses a bit of an outlier here. It’s also interesting that there is very little gap in the losses between drawn and taken.

What Period Do the Leafs Take and Draw the Most Penalties?

Taken Drawn
1 80 94
2 99 95
3 66 89
OT 3
Grand Total 248 278

Apparently the second period is the least disciplined period for the Leafs. It’s also encouraging that the Leafs tend to draw more penalties in the third. Less encouraging is that they managed to take three overtime penalties.

How about when they are Leading, Losing, or Tied?

Taken Drawn
Leading 80 88
Losing 87 103
Tied 81 87
Grand Total 248 278

Fantastic that the Leafs are applying pressure, and drawing penalties to get themselves back into games. Of course these numbers are also heavily influenced by the amount of time they spent trailing their opposition this season.

Are the Leafs Leading, Losing or Tied when they are scored on while killing a penalty?

PPGA
Leading 18
Losing 21
Tied 16
Total 55

At least the Leafs were already losing when they were giving up powerplay goals though this is pretty evenly balanced.

Now if you look at it by period…

Period PPGA
1 16
2 27
3 10
OT 2
Total 55

The middle frame was a kiss of death for the Leafs.

And when did they score on the Powerplay?

PPG
Leading 19
Losing 13
Tied 17
Total 49

It’s discouraging to see that the Leafs didn’t use the powerplay to pull themselves back into games more often and…

Period PPG
1 18
2 16
3 15
Total 49

… for all those extra third period opportunities it’s a huge disappointment that they had a hard time finding third period powerplay goals.

When the Leafs had a Powerplay Goal against, who was most likely to be in the penalty box?

Power Play Goals Against
Bozak 5
MacArthur 5
Phaneuf 5
Crabb 4
Komisarek 4
Lupul 4

Who was most likely to have drawn a penalty to put the Leafs on a successful powerplay?

PPG
Lupul 6
MacArthur 4
Connolly 3
Frattin 3

When the Leafs are losing or tied in the 3rd period, who draws the most penalties to put the Leafs on the powerplay?

Penalties Drawn
Lupul 6
Kessel 4
Bozak 3
Brown 3
Crabb 3
Liles 3

If you’re interested in looking into the numbers further checkout the spreadsheet. If the Leafs penalty kill struggles as much this year as it has in the past it might not be a bad idea to become acquainted with penalty data. While the trends may be nothing more than coincidence, there are consistencies in the way players behave. It is also a valuable skill to draw penalties and when players are doing that is worth knowing.

Michael Forbes does an excellent job of capturing the entire span of history of the Leafs organization in this piece, and given the subject matter I’m sure everyone and there dog would have added or subtracted a couple of different answers. For me I’d put Peter Zezel in the Unsung Hero category, and put the “Pat’s Garage” print in the Swag section.

Sudbury Wolves Win the Junior Club World Cup
I didn’t know there was such a thing as the Junior Club World Cup, but apparently Josh Leivo did the Leafs proud with his performance there.

What are your honest expectations of/for Phil Kessel?
Somewhere between scoring 30 goals and ending global terrorism. Vintage Leaf Memories has a more thoughtful response.

I’d hate to see people jump too far ahead on Rielly. He’s only played around 20 junior games in the past year. He just turned 18 in march and after that layoff i wouldn’t want to see him worn down in the long NHL grind, especially facing NHLers who are bigger, faster, smarter and stronger than anything he’s ever been up against.

I don’t understand most of you who are ready to annoint Reimer after one decent run in 2011. The guy had no pressure, nothing to lose, not to mention the whole team was playing the best hockey in years. Goalies like Reimer who had their 5 minutes of fame are a dime a dozen. We had 2 good examples of that a few years ago, first it was Toskala, the back up goalie with the best numbers in the league, Leafs traded for him…turned out to be shit, then there was Raycroft, rookie of the year, who also turned out to be shit. So, before we all crown red light Reimer, let’s take a breather and see where he after this season, maybe then any statements regarding Reimer being the real deal might hold some validity and credibility.

For sure. And I think even though the guy seems to have more talent than Luke, he’s a puck possession player and there is going to be a significant adjustment in terms of speed and the lack of space hell have with the big club. He looks like a really smart player and I’m sure he’ll get through the learning curve. I really wish there was an option for elite junior players to grab some time in the AHL even though they are still junior eligible, just to adjust to playing against men before they hit the big club.

Lots of goalies have Cinderella runs dude, just look at Steve Mason, another one hit wonder, I could name a dozen without even thinking. Reimer will be joining Raycroft and Toskala in a few very short years, looking for work overseas……..watch and see. This kid does not have the make up, agility nor flexibilty to be #1 starter in the NHL. His style of being square to the puck and hope it hits you is a crock of shit and his puck handling skills are downright laughable. I have far more faith in Scrivens in having a decent NHL career than I’d do Reimer. Hurt my ass, if he was hurt he should have stayed hurt and not returned till this fall. He was cleared to play and he couldn’t get it done, that’s the bottom line. Hey, if he proves me wrong, I’d be happy and the first to commend him, but I’ll stick to my words for now. As I mentioned earlier, lets not crown him yet.

And Jimmy Howard has played 60 games a season the past few years, not sure how much they’re counting on Gus.

Reimer’s history of concussions worries me the most….didn’t a shot off his mask in practice end his season prematurely last year??

One sided? Nope, its more like realistic, and not looking through blue and white glasses. My points are valid . Like I said, 8 years and no playoffs and we’re playing the Reimer violin and hoping, expecting he can rebound? Well, if he’s so fucking good, why even mention Luonguo. Pogge given ample oppurtunity to succed? Now that’s bullshit man and not in the least bit accurate. And I never said anyone was annointing him as a chamopiship goalie, get your bloody facts straight. Its my fuckin opinion, you got yours and so does everyone else. Playing guessing games with goalies after years of no playoffs is a dangerous game. No pressure at all……if Reimer comes out like he ended off last year he’ll get eaten alive. Thank you for your input Mr. Perfect. The next time someone criticizes a Leaf, or the team, don’t take it to heart, God, the moment someone bashes a Leaf, the team, or Burke, you are always there to capitlize, maybe you are Brian?
