Leafs hit the ice

Hockey is in the air. Players around the NHL have finally started to take to the ice for scrimmages and practices, despite the whole lockout thing.

There isn’t anything to report on the CBA front, but hopefully with the sense that hockey should be around the corner, the folks in charge can buckle down and get something set up. Though it isn’t necessarily about hammering out a deal over the course of many hours, as Clarke MacArthur mentioned yesterday:

“It just shows there’s still some work to be done,” said MacArthur. “Maybe instead of going at it every day, it’s better to take some time. And think things over, and reassess.”

With talks stalled, maybe MacArthur is right and when the NHL and PA get back to it, they can do so with more reasonable proposals.

RC does have to fix our Dzone play though, goaltending was bad, but our coverage was to blame in many cases also.

new system,, training camp, pre-season??? lol…

lots of time for our dman to figure this out.,,,,,,but a solid goalie is needed and i think LOU is going to end up here,,,,(forget what his #1 choice is, tor can afford him, flor is a budget team with theordore (ntc), markstrom (top goalie prospect), clemmenson (top backup)

Agreed and I’m sure he’s gonna institute a system that helps fix that issue, he seemed to engage the players a lot more when he arrived, its what u want to see with such a young group

Ya Florida really has no reason to go after luo go, their goaltending situation is stable and I doubt they want Lou’s massive contract on their books. I see Toronto being Lou’s best fit and I very much doubt that douche gillis moves him to chi town, the team that eats their lunch on the regular in the first round

Agreed. The thing I noticed most when RC took over was the coaching on the bench.

It was a welcome change from old Wilson’s stern “let’s go” ….that being said Wilson was kind of a stop-gap coach till Burke could ice a team he felt could make the playoffs…..it almost did but fell short……Wilson took on a huge task when he was expected to make the playoffs with a rebuilding roster.

I think the chances of Luongo landing here are slim to nil….my reasons really haven’t changed from the get go..I don’t think Gillis wants to help Burke…I don’t think Luongo wants to come to a pressure cooker like Toronto…..and I’m not so sure Burke wants to take on his contract…..and I’m also pretty sure Gillis is looking for more than Burke would want to pay…..add it all up…and its very unlikely Luongo is a Leaf..never say never..but I don’t see it happening…

And speaking of Burke..the more I think I about the more I think he is on real thin ice going into this season….if he doesn’t address the goaltending and it becomes an issue early on..the fans will be screaming…if JVR happens to get injured again the fans will be livid…and if this team is out of the playoffs by December….well…the torches and pitch forks will be out in full force…..scary thing is…there’s a real possibility of all 3 of those things happening…..

where do you see LOU ending up then? not too many teams can afford his contract, and the leafs can……i see your point with Gillis, but he needs to move LOU asap….i think a deal can be worked out.

Potential candidates are probably Toronto, Chicago, Florida, and Tampa, both Florida teams have goalies signed and probably don’t wanna spend the cash……now it depends if gillis hates Chicago more then Burke lol

I think he ends up on the bolts or panthers myself…I don’t think Gillis or Luongo want any part of Toronto…I think Gillis would actually take less in a trade to keep from dealing with Burke….just my opinion…we shall see though…

Totally agree Whalz…my rec hockey starts this Friday..and again on Sunday….after a long hot summer of beer and golf I am going to be one hurting unit on Monday morning….as for the NHL…I will be severely pissed off if there is any delay in starting the season…both sides are tempting fate if they don’t come to an agreement…I love the game and will always be a fan…but I would hold them accountable in other ways….no merchandise..no tickets…no extras….they are taking the fans totally for granted…

Luongo is completely worthless now anyways.  I don’t really want him if the cap drops to 58 million (or less).

Its gonna get real mukky if the cap comes down….should open up some interesting oppertunities to take advantage of teams……Burke’s forecasting should really help if that is the case

It’s a very small drop compared to last time, when teams like Detroit had to drop 35+ million in one off-season.  In fact, a drop to 58 million really only effects 2 or 3 teams in a meaningful way – especially if they do as they did last time, and as most sports do, and allow an amnesty buy-out.
