Leafs hit the ice

Hockey is in the air. Players around the NHL have finally started to take to the ice for scrimmages and practices, despite the whole lockout thing.

There isn’t anything to report on the CBA front, but hopefully with the sense that hockey should be around the corner, the folks in charge can buckle down and get something set up. Though it isn’t necessarily about hammering out a deal over the course of many hours, as Clarke MacArthur mentioned yesterday:

“It just shows there’s still some work to be done,” said MacArthur. “Maybe instead of going at it every day, it’s better to take some time. And think things over, and reassess.”

With talks stalled, maybe MacArthur is right and when the NHL and PA get back to it, they can do so with more reasonable proposals.

I think if Burke is subjected to the same anger of the ACC crowd as was faced by Wilson he may very well resign

And signing Hall to a ridiculous undeserved extension.

I really believe the Oilers will not reach the heights they should with all those great picks. They have not developed the properly, and have no support around them.

I’d also be conserned that both hall and rnh have suffered some rather serious injuries early in their careers, seems to be the case of too much too soon, won’t know how that will effect them going forward. Also worry about yakupov heading to the khl during the lockout cause u better believe some Russian oil Barron is gonna rain money on that kid to stay.

Ya its culmination of years of mismanagement falling on the shoulders of Burke and these young kids who inherited this pressure. Its unfortunate but that’s the case and no one is level headed enough to give them time. Hopefully with bell and rogers as owners they will call off their media dogs for a bit to give the team some time to breath

Yeah, imo they have rushed every pick before they are physically ready for the NHL. I don’t disagree on Yak either.

Eberle is far better right now, but he’s also a touch older.  The big thing for me though, is the injury question marks. The guy has missed 38 games in two seasons, which is almost 25% of the time.  And his style is such that you can’t really imagine the guy ever shaking that.  Or at least, I can’t.

I also think he has inflated stats out of necessity, but that’s a matter of opinion.

They should definitely move past Calgary in their own division this year, but even that isn’t guaranteed.  Iginla is still a great leader who gets the most out of garbage just like Sundin did.  And Kiprusoff makes a bad team competitive regardless.  It’s a tough uphill climb for that team.

And Yakupov does too.  I just have this gut feeling that when it matters, they’re only ever going to get Yakupov, RNH and Hall healthy at the same time for about 25 games a season.

Sigh….if only we had kiprusoff….lol’ agree though Edmonton is still in tough to make any ground on other teams. Their defense is still very suspect

Wouldn’t be surprised if that ends up being the case, they don’t have much of a supporting cast to protect them either.

I really want to see what San Jose does if the cap goes down.  That’s a team I hope we’re talking to.  They have a couple pieces we could use.

Exactly.  I think comparing them to Chicago is ridiculous, and yet so many people do it.  When the Hawks added Toews and Kane with ultra high draft picks, they already had Versteeg, Ladd, Keith, Seabrook, Byfuglien, Brouwer, Eager, and so forth.  The reason that team learned to win so quickly is because the pieces were all in place when they added those two.

By the time Edmonton has swapped out Horcoff, Hemsky, Belanger, and their shabby D with players that constitute a winning supporting cast, their core forwards are going to be costing them 25-30 million.
