From MLHS user DefenceWinsChampionships:

As some of you may already know, I got to see Morgan Rielly play last night in Regina. He scored Moose Jaw’s only goal in a 4-1 loss to the Pats. Here are some things I noticed throughout the night:

- Rielly started off slow, but got better as the game went on. It became more and more apparent, over time, that he was the star of the Warriors’ team. Late in the game, he tried to do more himself, apparently feeling some desperation, with his team trailing.

- His passes are hard and accurate, and can come unexpectedly. There was one play where he put a long pass between two Pats and sent a teammate into the offensive zone on a short breakaway. The player did not end up scoring, however.

- Leading up to his powerplay goal, Rielly made it blatantly evident that he wanted the puck. He tapped his stick on the ice until his teammate passed to him, then skated inward and fired a wrister from the top of the circle, beating the Pats’ goaltender. The calling for the puck is a sign of a high level of confidence, something that should aid him in his development.

- Late in the game, when he was playing his best, Rielly read a play, jumped up to the Pats’ blue line, and intercepted a pass, giving himself a breakaway from the blue line in. Unfortunately, his hard wrist shot missed the net. He was trying to pick a corner.

- Rielly actually looked fairly big out there, or at least tall. He isn’t a little “pipsqueak”, by any means. We shouldn’t have to worry too much about him getting thrown around, especially considering the fact that he still has time to grow before suiting up in a Leafs uni.

- He does the little things well. Things that you see from the good puck-movers in the NHL. For example, he was very successful at receiving the puck in his defensive zone under heavy forechecking pressure. He can make that little spin move near the hash marks that good NHL defenseman sometimes make to shake off fore-checkers. It’s hard to explain, but if you watch enough hockey, you should know what I’m talking about.

- He’s also very smart on the powerplay, and works well with his teammates. Often, in the NHL, you’ll see a dman take a pass from a guy on the half boards, take a couple steps inward to draw the nearest opposing defender towards himself, and then flip an almost behind-the-back backhand return pass to the forward on the wall. Rielly did this once, then got himself open right away. He got a pretty good shot off, as a result.

This is just an unorganized summary of things I noticed from Morgan Rielly last night. The goal and the breakaway pass should be in the highlights on the Pats/Warriors websites, if you want to see them. Overall, I was pretty impressed by the kid’s play. He’s a point-per-game player so far this season, if anyone is wondering. He may be for the whole year, because he is a noticeable threat on the ice, even as a defenseman.

Yeah…I think that pretty accurately sums things up.

A couple things I will say: Cherry has been on the Leafs’ case for years because his perception of their treatment of Kadri. He’s been consistent and I also think he knows exactly what shit this would cause.

I think Eakins was asked specifically about Kadri, I don’t think he went out of his way to slam Kadri. He also had some good things to say about Naz.

The owners say they want longer ELC for players, like five years or something, and free agency put back the way it was before the last CBA.

Seems clear Kadri gets the tough love treatment from his coaches because he needs that kick in the pants. Kadri has grown up but needs to continue to learn his natural talents don’t take him further than the AHL. Eakins has motivation down to a science and he would know how to push his buttons. Who cares what the media says.

    Joffrey Lupul ‏@JLupul
NHL should be doing a 1 game playoff between the 8th and 9th place teams to try and get into the playoff. No brainier..  >> He’s a true Leaf already lol

Our luck we’d finish 8th and lose in the qualifier.

Not defending Cherry, but as I recall RW was all over Kadri in his first pre-season after playing great.  It was almost as if Kadri was getting more notice than Wilson from the media and Wilson didn’t like it. Hence the early criticism from Cherry whether fair or not.

If you watch the actual interview Eakins doesn’t come off nearly as bad as when you see the comments in print. Probably should have just dodged the question though. Kadri even said yesterday he’s trying to get his body where it should be for the NHL.

There will be no deal unless the owners get concessions from the players on revenue sharing but there’s not a hope in hell the players will give any concessions on UFA.

Yep.  He must exude something in his personality that tells people he needs to be knocked down a peg continually.  Only time will tell for sure, but Eakins and Wilson have both seen fit to do this – mind you, always in ways that were blown way out of proportion by the media (similar comments are made about other players in other markets all the time, it’s just that no one cares).  Contrary to popular belief, Wilson was not an evil moron who just hated Kadri, either.
    -
Of all the media battles the Leafs have, I most hope they end the HNIC one.  It’s getting ridiculous.  The whole staff just hates the Leafs, and it shows.

it not so much that they hate the Leafs but the fact they know in saying such things will make for a big story, cause it attracts more people too it (both Leafs fans and the haters)

I remember two years ago the Marlies coaching staff talking about how the constant media attention on Kadri was driving them crazy because it wasn’t good for team building when the guy has all the TV cameras following him around after practice.

I would never base an argument around it for an article or anything, but I could feel it  when I’ve been in the same room as him a few times, and even through his tweets. Definitely needs to understand he hasn’t accomplished anything yet. Just my impression.

He’s a kid who needs a lot of patience in terms of his maturity, both physical and mental. This isn’t the best market for that but hopefully management and the coaching staffs shows more patience than the media has. To their credit, so far they have.

I’m in the school of thought that Kadri hasn’t been treated unfairly or unfairly robbed of ice time at the NHL level. He’s got just about as many games as he’s deserved. I hope to finally see him hold a spot out of training camp this season if it happens, but only if he deserves it.

Well, I truly believe that part of why their broadcasts are so anti-Leaf is to satisfy all the Western Canadians who absolutely despise the team, but it also seems like the feud with Cherry and Burke/Wilson spilled over into a lot of other areas.
