Let’s do something else
Share

The NHL and PA will get together again today. Nothing will come of it, we’ll complain about it on the internet, and there still won’t be NHL hockey. At first I would’ve said “there still won’t be hockey” but I’ve joined the folks who are pushing for other leagues to get attention. The NHL is the best hockey league on this planet, but it isn’t the only one.

The “best” part is enough to bring me back when the league eventually starts back up, but to be honest I’m not really missing the NHL like I thought I would. The IceCaps here in St. John’s are ready to get going, and besides that I’ve been finding more time for other sports, hobbies, whatever.

Maybe I was investing too much time in to the NHL anyway. And since they won’t invest the time in to the fans, why bother worrying about them? Same goes for the NHLPA.

This piece from PPP really knocked it out of the park yesterday.

From Forbes:

There will be no talk of contraction or appropriate team locations. No sub-committee meetings on the failings of the sun belt strategy. There most certainly won’t be anyone calling for changes to the worst elements of the culture of hockey – cleaning up the nepotism and cronyism among NHL executives and employees. No debate over the importance of an impartial 3rd party for discipline and appeals processes. No consideration for some sort of ombudsmen to help mediate positive changes to the game.

Instead, we’re left with players vs. owners in an unfortunately adversarial system that’s willing to forego discussing how to improve the game (re-alignment, balanced schedules, Olympic participation, under 20 NA born players in the AHL, etc.) in pursuit of partisan economic priorities.

Whether you want to focus your efforts on another club from another hockey league, or a whole different sport, please don’t sit around waiting for updates from these CBA talks. It’ll get done when it gets done, and if the NHL/PA damages the league because of it, it’s on them.

The NHL is by far the best hockey in the world. It has the best players and is the most organized. Other hockey looks “bush league” in comparison. That being said, AHL and CHL hockey can still be fun to watch. Personally, I’ll be heading to a few Regina Pats’ games throughout the season, and will keep up with the Marlies and Leafs’ players/prospects in other leagues. But none of this will adequately replace the NHL. Winter just isn’t the same without the Leafs.

He could prevent a trade though. A lousy start in the A would almost gaurentee a Trade for a starting goalie where we would get Raped in prospects or handcuffed by Lou’s Contract. A stellar season by Scrivens would stop that

not for certain bro if the Season had of started on time, a good bet is there would have been a trade ( Probably Lou Yuck) . Now Scrivens has a chance to prevent that and obtain NHL work ( with the Leafs)

Scrivens will get NHL employment sooner or later. Either with the Leafs or with another team. Burke won’t keep him around, if he can’t find a fit on the Leafs, he will trade him to a team that needs him. Burke now has a small, but growing pool of tradable assets. He has a few defensemen and a few goalies.

It is the best hockey league in the world inspite of the  owners. The comments from Forbes say  everything about the willingness of owners to improve the league

Here is part of an  article from the Stars Dave Feschusk, that reinforces it

s much as the league’s ownership suites are populated by the ranks of billionaires and billion-dollar corporations, there are actually only a select few power brokers who enjoy a say in the matters that matter. Boston’s Jeremy Jacobs, Detroit’s Mike Ilitch, Chicago’s Rocky Wirtz, Philadelphia’s Ed Snider — they’re pre-Bettman lifers who’ve carved out influence and power in hockey’s cigar-chomping old-boys’ club. As for the men who run MLSE — they’re most certainly not among the core group.

outside of getting Lou at a fair deal (unlikely) or maybe Hiller, I don’t see who we would of picked up.. and likely may have sent Reimer out.. but as of now Cox was pointing out the obvious :)

I agree with you Ryan that really as a priority in life the NHL really ranks pretty low.  It is fun, but can be replaced pretty easily by hockey that is non-assholish.  Knowing more and more about the self centered morons that run, own and sometimes play for teams reduces the entire image and draw of the NHL.   Now pictures of Fehr, Daley, Bettman, evoke feelings of hatred and once that link is formed to the game, a lot of people will not care to support the NHL.  These leaders are its identity and they are all self centered scum.

I think Lou will be gotten for a very fair deal. The Leafs may no the the ultimate destination though. When the return price is that small he may end up in Florida.

Luongo would give us a shot at the playoffs. Reimer/Scrivens won’t. Miller, Rask, Price and Anderson are all in our division. Our forwards and dmen aren’t good enough to compensate for the huge goaltending disadvantage. Too bad Lou wants to go to Florida…

I just hope the season isn’t cancelled altogether. We’ll have a better shot at a top 5 pick if the season is played than if we have to rely on the same type of lockout lotto as in the 2005 draft. Yeah, we’d be one of the teams with 3 balls in the machine, but out of a total of 50-something, it won’t be a big advantage.

Maybe, But even if Kadri is on the block what kind of return do you get for him. He’s not a Hodgson that doesn’t want to play. He’s just odd man out like Ryan was in Anaheim. I think it all gets sorted in the first 4 months of the next season. Whenever it starts.

Yep you might be right, I just think Burke is going to make a splash, if the season Happens and the CBA allows. I also believe Burke will keep Colburne the Center ahead of Kadri, who they have playing wing probably. 3rd Kadri will be what the other teams are asking for,not Dissing the Kid just saying he will be the guy that gets us the Star
