From the Toronto Marlies:

The Toronto Marlies announced Thursday, the team’s 2012-13 opening day roster. The Marlies, who will begin their eighth season on Saturday, open with 24 skaters and three goaltenders.

Toronto’s 2012-13 roster consists of goaltenders Mark Owuya, Jussi Rynnas and Ben Scrivens; defencemen Jesse Blacker, Mark Fraser, Jake Gardiner, Simon Gysbers, Korbinian Holzer, Mike Kostka, Paul Ranger and Dylan Yeo; and forwards Spencer Abbott, Will Acton, Carter Ashton, Keith Aucoin, Joe Colborne, Jerry D’Amigo, Nicolas Deschamps, Jamie Devane, Ryan Hamilton, Nazem Kadri, Leo Komarov, Greg McKegg, Brad Ross, Kenny Ryan, Greg Scott, Mike Zigomanis.

The Marlies have also announced their broadcast schedule for the month of October:

Toronto’s four home games are highlighted by two Rogers Sportsnet ONE broadcasts – October 13 against Rochester and October 20 against Hamilton. Leafs TV will air live coverage of the other two Marlies home games in October – October 14 against Lake Erie and October 21 against Grand Rapids.

The Marlies play their season opener on Saturday, October 13 against the Rochester Americans, AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, at 5 p.m. at Ricoh Coliseum. For 2012-13 Marlies ticket information, including season ticket packages and group seats, visit marlies.ca or call the team’s ticket line at 416-597-PUCK. For the full 2012-13 schedule please visit marlies.ca.

The season opener against Rochester on Saturday will be broadcast on Sportsnet One with the crew of Joe Bowen, Greg Millen and Paul Hendrick calling the game. If there’s a silver lining to be gleaned on the night the Leafs were supposed to open at home against the Habs, the Marlies are it.

***

Mark Zwolinski  has a list of likely line combos (at least at forward) for tomorrow:

Carter Ashton/Keith Aucoin/Nazem Kadri
Greg McKegg/Mike Zigomanis/Ryan Hamilton
Nicolas Deschamps/Joe Colborne/Leo Komarov
Jerry D’Amigo/Will Acton/Greg Scott
Extras: Brad Ross/Kenny Ryan/Spencer Abbott

While it doesn’t feature established NHL talent like OKC’s roster, this is a very solid and deep lineup with a good balance of developing youth and veteran presence. The mix of grit and skill throughout is similarly balanced and Eakins should be able to roll four lines to great effect.

Yeah they do fill their building but what are the ticket prices like and what are the actual gate receipts in comparison to the bigger franchise’s? I personally think Leopold is taking a huge risk with signing Suter and Parise to those huge contracts. I can also kind of see why he’s taking that risk too. He trying to build the brand on a more national scale which would generate a lot more revenue in the sale of team merchandise and also open up the opportunities for better local TV contracts, cooperate sponsorships and the like. Who knows for sure he may even be able to charge more at the gate as well. He looking for more exposure on a wider scale by building a winning franchise. It is a big gamble though.

The Islanders are just so fucked up right now but I doubt they ever move . Its an iconic franchise and a better owner with a new arena would go along way towards fixing that mess.

I think they’ll be fine in 2-3 years, provided Parise and Suter don’t get injured and become liabilities.  Once you have a core of Parise, Suter, Koivu, Dumba and Granlund (plus I’m sure they’re hoping to change Heatley into something decent for their back-end as well), they should be able to be the kind of team NBC wants to feature alongside the big markets.  Could be some serious star power.  And again, like you said, they should be able to raise prices at that point.

Just being in a division with Chicago, Detroit, Winnipeg and Dallas will help them as well.

As strong as NJ is as a club, I have not come across a fan. Every hockey fan I met in NJ was a Rangers fan. Kinda hard when you have a successful neighbor and a crap location for your own rink.

    They should all just fold.

    Dispersal draft top 5.
    1.John Tavares-Leafs
    2.Oliver Ekman-Larsson-Avs
    3.Ilya Kovalchuk-Jets
    4.Adam Larsson-Oilers
    5.Adam Henrique-Hurricanes

Or something like that. No matter what, we get Tavares! lol

Of course, but for all Wang’s stupidity in relation to hockey decisions, he’s done everything he can to get a new arena.  The problem is beyond solving at this point, but it might become solvable in the next decade.  I don’t think they can continue on with New Jersey AND the Islanders though.  But your losses with one of them.  I guess because of the fact that the Islanders are an icon, my choice would be the Devils.

If the belief is Toronto can hold two teams, then NY has to be able to. The TV contract needs two NY teams.

It’s not that NY can’t, it’s that they can’t get a suitable arena built for the Islanders due to several constraints beyond hockey.  The belief is that if they had a decent arena, the fans would flock there – and players as well.

I do believe the Devils have other interested potential buyers as well . Vanderbeek has worked out a deal to hold of the wolves for another 2 yrs so we will see what happens. There is some billionaire oil guy from Calgary whose name escapes me at the moment that was interesting in purchasing the team this summer .

But is any owner going to have success if the location is wrong?  That’s the question.  We know Bettman is brilliant at convincing a string of billionaires to take turns losing money in shit locations, but does that make it okay?

Both those franchises have had success in the past so I think it can still work, Its not like some of the sun belt teams that have never been successful.

Yes, but they moved the arena, which completely changes the dynamics.  It’s not about having success on the ice – clearly, as they just went to the Cup Final and lost how much?  Location is everything, which Glendale has proven.  They were also successful early on, but once they moved the arena, they were done.  Now you have that franchise committed to a losing location, and I believe we’ll be watching a Phoenix 2.0 scenario there.

Now, it’s probably not realistic to walk away from a brand new facility, but that’s what probably needs to happen.  Then hope that in 10 years, that facility has found a new purpose, and they can get something in a better area set up and return hockey to NJ.  Hockey is a far more elitist sport than any of the other big ones, and upper middle class white people – the demographic that supports the sport – aren’t going to go to the ghetto to support anything.

That would be sick if a team folded and we got the 5th pick(4th if it’s the ISLES)
    CLB- Tavares
    EDM- Reinhart
    MTL-Nino
    TOR-Strome

LOL I know what your saying but we will probably need a new comish to have that happen . Bettmans MO ever since his days in basketball is to try to keep franchise’s from moving. The validity of this strategy is open to question of course when you consider what happened in Winnipeg and PHX but its the way he works.

Well, I’m just hoping he’s learned and adapted his MO.  I think it’s honorable that he wants to try and make it work as long as possible, but what he should have learned from the Winnipeg situation is that sometimes it’s good to cut your losses, and then keep that location in the back of your mind, and plan for a successful return.

It was mentioned in Gatehouses book that he recognized his mistake in the Peg. It wasn’t even more then a couple of months after that happened that he meet Chipman and moving back was always something he wanted to do.

I don’t know that it was a huge mistake though.  The city couldn’t compete in that environment, and the loss of the team forced the city to shut down a shitty old arena and open up a nice new facility in a solid location.

The more I think about it, the more I think I’d like to see NJ relocated to Quebec.  What a swan song for Brodeur, and they have the budding French star in Henrique to go with him.

True. Aeros play at the Toyota Center, which is where the Rockets play, and is a first class venue. Houston and Dallas is always a huge rivalry. But after Dallas its rather thin in terms of interest.

From what I could gather his hands were tied somewhat in the Peg but he regretted in a big way having to move that team . Little know fact also there was a chance that Gillette was going to sell the Habs to someone who was considering  relocating that team. Bettman put a stop to it very quickly and said relocating a team like the Habs would never happen on his watch . He was also mostly responsible with brokering the deal between Gillettte and Molsen when the team was finally sold . He also jumped through hoops trying to make sure the Sens Oilers and Flames would remain in Canada during the Canadian dollar crisis that almost resulted in those team folding.

Thanks Bboy.  Wonder how Eberle and RNH are liking playing in the A?

If either of those guys get injured and the lockout ends, do they get paid at the AHL rate or the NHL rate?

I’m guessing they are signed to AHL contracts at $65,000 per so that’s what they would collect if injured .
