The NHL said f*ck you and dumped us, knowing we’ll take it back later Who needs the NHL? The Marlies are back and with their new jerseys look more like the Leafs than ever before.

The Marlies drop the puck on their 2012-13 campaign at 5 p.m. this afternoon. Joe Bowen and the gang will be calling the game on Sportsnet One. Their opponent is the Rochester Americans, who are playing their second game in under 24 hours after beating the Syracuse Crunch 6-5 last night. The defending Western Conference champions should be fired up for their home opener, hopefully giving us an edge heading into this one.

Ten things to look out for this Marlies season, starting tonight (+ the lineup after the jump)…

1) Will the additions of Gardiner and Kostka help the Marlies turn their powerplay around this season?
2) Will the Marlies’ PK, led by Jerry D’Amigo and Ben Scrivens, continue to be gangbusters?
3) Will we begin to see evidence of Eakins adopting the “Carlyle defensive system?” (Might be best to stick with whatever system kept the Marlies near the top in goals against, but in terms of organizational continuity..)
4) Can a healthy Joe Colborne get his 2012 back on track after a great end to 2011? Will Colborne, Kadri and, with some time and patience once he returns, Frattin dominate and prove they’re in the wrong league?
5) How do the rookies in McKegg and Ross fare in their transition to the pro game?
6) How is Kadri’s speed, strength and conditioning? Can we see his body fat percentage through his equipment?
7) Who becomes number three on the Leafs’ goaltending depth chart (Owuya or Rynnas)?
8) Where do Holzer, Ranger and Kostka stack up on the D depth chart? Who might be in line for some big league appearances when the NHL comes back?
9) When Jamie Devane plays, can he do more than smash face? (To his credit, he does this well). How does #87 Leo Komarov look as an agitator and player?
10) Just how consistently perfect is Eakins’ hair?

We’ll begin to answer all that and more starting this evening. Let’s go Marlies.

Your lineup:

FORWARDS
Ashton – Aucoin – Kadri
Komarov – Colborne – Deschamps
Hamilton – Zigomanis – McKegg
D’Amigo – Acton – Scott

DEFENCE
Gardiner – Kostka
Fraser – Holzer
Ranger – Blacker

Starting Goalie: Ben Scrivens

We should see Dallas Eakins roll his four lines as all are more than capable of a regular shift. One last note: Carter Ashton (didn’t mention him in the 10 Qs) will get a nice opportunity playing alongside Kadri and Aucoin. We’ll see if he can bring some physicality and net presence to that unit.

I agree the last shift was the only time I really recognized Hodgson on the ice.

One twitter comment I read said Mike Kostka had six of the Marlies 21 shots at one point.

Couple of my observations in row 1 behind the glass 2 seats from the Marlies bench lol

1.) Jake Gardiner is turning into something special, the vision he has and his ability to break down defensive schemes is improving. He plays with a great deal of confidence and seems to be jumping into the play to produce offence without hesitation.

2.) Leo Komarov has come as advertised, the guy finishes his checks, hacks, slashes, tosses elbows up, and has a d’amigo like puck pursuit. One particular instance occurred right in front of me as the second period ended. A rochester player pushed Komarov from behind as he was heading to his bench, light tap, but leo took considerable offence, skated up to him face to face and jarred him all the way back to the bench, took the reffs to settle things down. Loved what he was doing, still needs time to adjust to the game, but as it went on he looked to settle in, was effective.

3.) Greg Mckegg played an excellent game, the kid has very good size, hands and vision, found himself in several excellent scoring positions. As his confidence improves hes gonna be an excellent player for the Marlies. Took the body a couple times, had a solid game

4.) Keith Aucoin – Played along time Kadri for most of the game, easily the smallest player on the team. Didn’t not too much out of him but it will come, hes is the crosby of the AHL after all

5.) Kadri was excellent, made things happen on most shifts, very good at gaining the zone, he looked dangerous

6.) Colbourne had a solid game as well, set up Hamilton’s first goal, was using his body effectively and tossed down some solid hits, his skating does look improved and his overall speed as well.

7.) Scrivens was solid, tracked pucks well, had some problems with puck distribution but made the saves he needed to make

8.) Paul Ranger – early on had several turnovers but was able to recover, hes obviously still adjusting to the pace of the game, didnt look too bad.

Marlies power-play was excellent, moving the puck around, making solid shot selections and a common denominator was that Eakins had someone parked in Leggio’s paint the entire time. The Marlies go hard to the net and they stay there, hope this translates to the big club because it was very effective

    The bad

Nicholas Deshampes – didnt have a very good game, saw alot of bench after a couple turnovers. he’ll be alright though
