Lake Erie 4 vs. Marlies 0: Lowlights

Everything that went right for the Marlies yesterday went wrong today against the Lake Erie Monsters – they failed to convert on 11 powerplay opportunities and 40 shots for. The Marlies saw a more aggressive penalty kill from Lake Erie, and as Eakins suggested in his post game interview, the reaction from the powerplay units was to stray from the structure as opposed to stick to the game plan. Seems simplistic to begin and end with the powerplay in this brief game analysis (and the Marlies were far from error free defensively), but bad things are bound to happen when you spend a full period with the man advantage and fail to find the net. The hot goalie in the Lake Erie net didn’t do them any favours.

Game in Six after the jump.

Djamon: I agree with you. However it seems “Failure is not an option”. Clubs must have a winning attitude. Everything is predicated on W-L. As much as we want proper development, it would seem the NHL does not view this as a priority. If the big club was a lot more successful would the Marlies be allowed to develop. As TH says DE wants a NHL job, as do some of the coaches. Its a dog eat dog world (and I hate wearing milk-bone underwear).

It’s also important to graduate players who are used to winning if possible.

I think Hunter won a few games… Burke has even said how important it is to bring the kids up in a winning environment. I agree player development is huge but I think winning is just as important. If a 20 year old can’t beat out a 30 year old career ahler chances are he will not be a huge impact player in the NHL IMO, so they should adjust to learning secondary roles.

Chances are if they’re good enough to graduate they’ve had success.
I’m not sure I buy into the concept of “learning to win”. If everyone plays well, you’ll win. When you play like shit show some character at least.

I agree that it’s preferable to have them learn in a winning environment, but by no means should it be a priority. I think a kid needs to be given a chance to learn from his mistakes, to learn to deal with adversity. If he’s worried he’s going to be benched every time he fucks up it doesn’t do anyone any good.

This has been my issue with the treatment of Kadri. They want him to be a finished product before he gets to stay in the NHL.

I agree that kids need to learn from their mistakes, but if they continue to make the same mistakes they should have to deal with the adversity of being benched.  : )
