Lake Erie 4 vs. Marlies 0: Lowlights

Everything that went right for the Marlies yesterday went wrong today against the Lake Erie Monsters – they failed to convert on 11 powerplay opportunities and 40 shots for. The Marlies saw a more aggressive penalty kill from Lake Erie, and as Eakins suggested in his post game interview, the reaction from the powerplay units was to stray from the structure as opposed to stick to the game plan. Seems simplistic to begin and end with the powerplay in this brief game analysis (and the Marlies were far from error free defensively), but bad things are bound to happen when you spend a full period with the man advantage and fail to find the net. The hot goalie in the Lake Erie net didn’t do them any favours.

Game in Six after the jump.

I’m glad that it’s just the beginning of the season.  It’s also only one loss in two games so there is lots of time to work things out.  Hopefully it was just a fluke and they’ll be back on track next game.

So, I was bored today and I decided to point out just how great Lupul and Kessel were last year. If you were to pro-rate their stats to 92-93(Our best year in recent memory, and Dougie’s huge season) Kessel would’ve had 51g 64a 115pts in 82gp and Lupul would’ve had 35g 59a 94pts in 66gp(43-73=116 if pro-rated to 82gp). Impressive stuff(if you put any stock into it)!

    By comparison that year Dougie had 32g 95a 127pts in 83gp and Andreychuk had 54g 45a 99pts in 83gp.

I figure if THN can do this to show how great Karlsson is, then why can’t we? Kessel and Lupul were a very, very high end duo last year, and because scoring isn’t as rampant anymore, it went a tad under the radar.

Didn’t like the fact that they didn’t play Ranger and Blacker. Although, maybe Ranger wants to ease his way back in a bit.

Blacker should never be sitting…barring injury.

Great. Just fucking great. There goes the perfect season right out the window already. This team’s only half as good as it was yesterday.

Interesting. Did you do the same projections on our goalies?

But if they are the third pairing, then they will have to share time with the fourth pair. Sad because the consistency is put at risk.

Yeah.  I was interested in seeing what Dylan Yeo will be bringing to the table.   I hope he brings more than a knife and fork from now on.  If he doesn’t  I’m sure he won’t be seeing any action that can’t be seen from the bench.

Kessel has world class talent .  Sure he has some warts and pimples , but if Burke ever adds a bit more talent to insulate him,  he has the potential to pot 50 goals.

    Lupul aint  too shabby either

Blacker should be more than a 3rd pairing defenseman. He’s a higher ranked prospect than Yeo, Gysbers and Holzer, frankly. He needs to play…otherwise what are the Marlies for?

There’ll be more wins, losses and some overtime games before the season is done.  No team has ever won them all, so lets see how well they respond next game.   ( I was also expecting to see a response after the 2nd period but other than McKegg I didn’t see much of an attempt to spark any momentum.

definitely wasn’t the same team as yesterday, it’ll get ironed out though and Fratts will be back to add some spark as well. I’m not too worried, chemistry needs to build amongst all the new players, top to bottom there is nearly someone new on each line.

In agreeance. I don’t understand dressing two AHL guys in Gysbers and Yeo for two guys who have NHL potential. Makes no sense.

Djamon: I agree but critics have suggested Holzer is stay at home, Blacker is the Offensive-Defenceman, and we have enough of those already. Thus Holzer needs ice-time as he is the next in waiting for the Big Club. Personally I’m thinking Koska might be that, but the knock remains, Koska is an O-D.

I was in Toronto visiting family a couple weeks ago and I was able to watch some games on Leafs TV from their ’93 Playoff run.

I had forgotten just how good Felix was. He made some really spectacular saves that spring.

No, I didn’t. It’s for the best, I think. :) Obviously, Gilmour is light years ahead defensively. But he might’ve been the best two-way forward in the past 30 years. Definitely the best that ever played for the Leafs in that time

Kessel is world class offensively. Defensively he’s a disaster. Imo they need to find him a responsible C. He and Lups absolutely must get on the positive side if the ledger.

After Dougie he was my favourite Leaf as a young lad. Too bad he fizzled out early.

That is what worried me. There wasn’t the same speed. I didn’t see the movement level in the PP, and I saw too much shooting from the point. We seemed to have lost our net presence. I wanted to see leadership, but we seemed to keep doing the same old. Yes its game 2, but it was a different team, or the Monsters were that much more aggressive and took the Marlies game away from them. Hope they learn quick.

They also only played two preseason games I believe so it’s as though they’re still getting  in form.   I agree that it’s too early to worry about 1 game.

Eakins should have ready for the next game.   Like I said I was surprised he didn’t come up with something different in the 3rd period, but by next game ( Friday) he’ll have them whipped into shape.

Truth, I’m really disappointed. Last night IBLeaf said he just wanted to enjoy the Marlies and not dissect. I guess I want that too, but I have such high expectations for them, and I so want to see a Leafs team win something, that I’m finding it hard to relax. Yes its game 2, but I was expecting a lot more carryover from last year. I need to chill, have a beer or something.
