Marlies kick off 3-game weekend in Hamilton

Let’s move on from the depressing CBA talk to the Marlies, whose league isn’t locked out and who play three games in three nights this weekend against Hamilton (B2B) and Grand Rapids. Unfortunately tonight’s game hasn’t been picked up by any of Leafs TV, Sportsnet or TSN Radio, but you can buy a stream to the game over at AHL live for $7, listen in on am820 Hamilton starting at 7:30 p.m., or there’s always the option of following along on Twitter. Sportsnet One is showing tomorrow’s game, Leafs TV has Sunday’s and both will be broadcast on TSN Radio.

We got some good news today on the Matt Frattin front. According to Jon Abbott, he skated in full gear this morning at the Ricoh before the team departed for Hamilton for their first of 12 meetings with the Bulldogs.

Dallas Eakins will go with the same 12 forwards but has four new line combinations up front for tonight’s game after his team was shut out last Sunday against Lake Erie. Hamilton and Zigomanis will flank Aucoin while Kadri shifts onto a line with Colborne and Komarov.

Lines (Clayton Hansler):

FOWARDS

Hamilton – Aucoin – Zigomanis
Kadri – Colborne – Komarov
Ashton – McKegg – Scott
D’Amigo – Acton – Deschamps

DEFENCE (Game Time Decision)

Gardiner – Kostka
Fraser – Holzer
Gysbers – Yeo
Blacker

That line of Kadri, Colborne and Komarov has my interest, as I’m sure it does yours for obvious reasons.

Ben Scrivens will start in net tonight. Dallas Eakins has hinted all three of Scrivens, Jussi Rynnas and Mark Owuya will see action in the Marlies’ first of five back-to-back-to-back weekends.

The Marlies beat the Bulldogs by a combined score of 5-1 in two preseason games earlier this month. Here are a few other matchup details courtesy of  Clayton Hansler (his full preview here):

  • Greg Scott scored six goals against the Bulldogs last season, plus the game winner during the preseason
  • Toronto’s power play operated at a 20.9% efficiency against Hamilton last season
  • Ben Scrivens notched a 6-3 record against the Bulldogs with a goals against average of 2.0 last season
  • Toronto has yet to register an even-strength goal, having scored all three on the powerplay so far

We’d have to have already secured someone like Stastny, or be comfortable running with Kadri/Bozak/Colborne down the middle.

I can only judge against what I saw in the O playoffs last year. He just seems to be more visible as a Marlie. He goes to the net well, can cycle well, and seems to be very, very good defensively. Someone who saw him more often last year may not agree having seen more of him. I believe he’s also playing with 3rd and 4th line guys.  Maybe he’s one of those guys who plays better as he moves up against better competition?

Well picking up JVR I think give us the Depth to move 2 core players for 1, however we would have to see the Leafs decision on Lups, if they are paying to keep em. Losing Lups Kulie and Grabo and replacing with Benn, I dont think we have the depth to do. Your right we would have to secure someone else before I would be comfortable doing that. I would probably feel dirty for doing it but ya it would be tough not moving on Benn.

Nice man, We think Different though. Not saying your wrong Just Different. I would be using our assets to secure a Top notch D man first. Then fill out my Forwards. Question for you. Who would be the top 3 D man you would Target for a partner for Dion ?

Mindbomb:-That would be my strategy too, I just don’t see any available.  Therefore my thinking switches to – take what’s out there and fill in the blanks as they open up.  Obviously Weber would be idea – Weber/Phaneuf/Gardiner/Rielly would be unstoppable.  Realistically though, I think we’re looking at short term veteran solutions in that role until someone does come available. No one is moving a Seabrook or a Weber,  Maybe Edler if he reaches UFA.

Good Day All…..so glad tonight’s game is on Sportsnet.  Awful stream last night.  I’m looking forward to seeing what Frattin can do this season when he returns.  We all have our favourite players and propspects and Grabo and Frattin are two of mine and would not be on my trade list……can’t wait to see who will ultimately be traded in order to upgrade our Leafs…only so many spots on a roster and not all prospects will work out, at least not in the blue and white.

I miss fantasy trade proposals.  Really, really, like Benn a lot.  Great hockey player and would be loved here immediately.

Once we start getting anything resembling solid goaltending, coupled with a renewed emphasis on not running around with lead footed D men trying to play run n gun, we should see an improvement in our D. Not saying I wouldn’t love another stud D at the moment, but, I think we take a wait and see approach before we give anything of significance up.

Bboy: Who would you drop? I didn’t see all the game, but I was very disappointed with Zigo-Hamilton-Aucoin line, didn’t think much of Ashton or Colborne in finding good scoring chances or finding the passes like Scott’s that gave Gards the goal. Deschamps has not been the same this season. Too many options for Abbot & Ross IMO which is bad.

Yeah, Kegger was definitely not 100% in the playoffs.  He doesn’t seem as flashy as Naz, but his vision for players around him is as good or better than Kadri’s.  Just like Kadri flourished with a sniper like Frattin during the playoffs last year, I think McKegg would look even better with other skilled players.  I’ve always thought the only thing that might hold him back is his skating but he doesn’t seem like he’s a step behind at the AHL level.

What stream were you using? I was using atdenet.tv and it wasn’t bad. The actual camera work was crappy at times but the picture was clear.

I was using the ” thefirstrow.eu ” one and yes, it was mainly the crappy camera/camera work that was the shits more so than the client providing the feed.  But its better than internet radio feed so I shouldn’t complain I guess.

Found the game very frustrating, almost wished there wasn’t a feed. I hope they find something for tonight. I can’t chill on this squad. Dallas talks about how much skill there is, but it is not translating on the ice. They have had an amazing number of shots, and few goals. Is that the quality of the shots, or the opposing goalies being brilliant? I really find it is more of the former. Only Gards seems to have a strong entry. He seems to be a man among boys. I really like Kostka. Blacker has been up and down for me. I am just exasperated with the PP and shooting in general. Oh well today’s game is a new game.

If they keep outshooting their opponents, they will start winning. You can’t consistently outshoot the opposition so badly without it eventually starting to translate into outscoring them too. They’ll be fine.

I think they come back with a good showing tonight after some lackluster play the past two games.  I expect it may take some time to get some chemistry going but I agree with all your concerns….its just too early to judge anything at this point.  Need to see them more.

If you’re expecting NHL calibre hockey, then you will be disappointed with almost every game. However, calling out a team on the 3rd game of the season, b/c they weren’t able to get traffic to the net or bear down on chances, while they are trying to find chemistry and playing in the other team’s barn, is just a tad premature.

Even Crosby and Malkin have stretches where they don’t put up points.  No need to start saying there’s no skill there.  They didn’t go to the Calder without skill. It’s just two games.
