Marlies kick off 3-game weekend in Hamilton

Let’s move on from the depressing CBA talk to the Marlies, whose league isn’t locked out and who play three games in three nights this weekend against Hamilton (B2B) and Grand Rapids. Unfortunately tonight’s game hasn’t been picked up by any of Leafs TV, Sportsnet or TSN Radio, but you can buy a stream to the game over at AHL live for $7, listen in on am820 Hamilton starting at 7:30 p.m., or there’s always the option of following along on Twitter. Sportsnet One is showing tomorrow’s game, Leafs TV has Sunday’s and both will be broadcast on TSN Radio.

We got some good news today on the Matt Frattin front. According to Jon Abbott, he skated in full gear this morning at the Ricoh before the team departed for Hamilton for their first of 12 meetings with the Bulldogs.

Dallas Eakins will go with the same 12 forwards but has four new line combinations up front for tonight’s game after his team was shut out last Sunday against Lake Erie. Hamilton and Zigomanis will flank Aucoin while Kadri shifts onto a line with Colborne and Komarov.

Lines (Clayton Hansler):

FOWARDS

Hamilton – Aucoin – Zigomanis
Kadri – Colborne – Komarov
Ashton – McKegg – Scott
D’Amigo – Acton – Deschamps

DEFENCE (Game Time Decision)

Gardiner – Kostka
Fraser – Holzer
Gysbers – Yeo
Blacker

That line of Kadri, Colborne and Komarov has my interest, as I’m sure it does yours for obvious reasons.

Ben Scrivens will start in net tonight. Dallas Eakins has hinted all three of Scrivens, Jussi Rynnas and Mark Owuya will see action in the Marlies’ first of five back-to-back-to-back weekends.

The Marlies beat the Bulldogs by a combined score of 5-1 in two preseason games earlier this month. Here are a few other matchup details courtesy of  Clayton Hansler (his full preview here):

  • Greg Scott scored six goals against the Bulldogs last season, plus the game winner during the preseason
  • Toronto’s power play operated at a 20.9% efficiency against Hamilton last season
  • Ben Scrivens notched a 6-3 record against the Bulldogs with a goals against average of 2.0 last season
  • Toronto has yet to register an even-strength goal, having scored all three on the powerplay so far

Leafbites: we have been told these are NHL calibre players, so I must believe (sarc). You are right, but of concern is we had a week to practise and they deliver a poor performance. As an aside, I am posting because I am very interested in how other posters see the game and hoping they will point out strengths and pluses. I come over negative, but I am not. I have very high expectations. I am also intensely proud of the Blue and White and Toronto, and for now, just want to see them sitting on the AHL throne (and on the NHL throne as and when there is hockey). Thx for the post.

Cam: Apologies, I’m not saying there is no skill. I am saying the abundance of skill they have is not being shown or being wasted. I marvel at what this group can do, and am exasperated at what they have done. As I posted to LeafBites, I am looking for posters to point out the strengths and pluses shown so far this season.

They just were on the throne though, or as close to it as you can come without having it.  There is very little need to be concerned about a team that wildly outshoots their opponent and loses two games. I think what you’re probably seeing is teams targeting the Marlies right now – they are a barometer for other clubs; a measuring stick.  So they’re going to face everyone’s absolute best effort the first little while.  We see this in the NHL too, where good teams seem to get off to rough starts – but they always come out of it before long.

Remember last year, even the Canucks were brutal to start the year.

I like grabo, ever since he beat up neil especially, frattin and gardiner. I think bozak will be traded for sure as we have mcclement now. Of course, they will have to get a #1C but i think 1 of our prospects will be good for that.

Hey we are back, Aye man they are tough to get but starting the season with Gunnarson on the 1st pairing and Reimer in net does not boost my confidence lol. And the Liles extension is still boggling my Mind.

Ha, no need to apologize.  Just saying, it’s way, way too early to get excited about these guys just yet. If this carried on for like 3 weeks, than we’d have a concern.  But more than likely you will see them have a big game sometime soon and be back on track.  Oftentimes, good teams need a wake-up call at the start of the year.  Going to the Calder probably gets in your head a little bit.  I imagine that at first you tend to forget how hard the road was, and just remember the destination.

Didn’t the leafs of 3 years ago out shoot their opposition all the time? An Islander game comes to mind where Roli the goalie was incredible. lol

Liles extension was solid.  He’ll have great trade value towards the end of the deal.  No need to fear Gunnarsson in that spot.  Did you forget that the two of them were magnificent together for 60 games?  In my opinion, they only slowed down because Wilson’s strategy exhausted them.  You can’t play the whole game in your zone and be successful all year.  The greatest help Carlyle could give to our D is to have the forwards help out in their own zone better, and maintain zone time at the other end better.

Obviously some more elite skill on the back end would be nice, but I don’t worry about Dion and Gunnar defensively at all – as long as we adapt our system.

It was different.  It’s quality of shots and play.  The Marlies seem to dominate play and control the pace.  The Leafs of 3 years ago were just marching into the zone and firing from anywhere for easy saves.  That being said, the Marlies need a sniper.  Even Aucoin is more of a play-maker.  Too many guys looking for the set-up.

Hmm Point Taken, however. We are currently discussing upgrading our 1C who’s wingers were both in the top ten in scoring, we should take a look at the D. I understand the Cost would be horrible but I think we are dreaming if we count on any of our young D playing first line minutes over the next couple of years. We should Have expirienced D man playing against Crosby, Giroux , Etc.

Another defensive option…Dustin Byfuglien.  I don’t think the Jets will want him much longer:

Thats the Point, they were exhausted and I see no relief this year. A reliable second pairing will allow the minutes to be more evenly dispersed. And you may be taking a little literary License using the word Magnificent. Magnificent was Chara and Seidenberg, They were adequate and with our Goaltending we can not aford adequate

Well, they had us in 5th place for 55 games, and even beyond that, I rarely ever felt they were our problem.  Even before the collapse, we were always a solid even strength team – it was the PK letting us down.  Chara and Seidenberg are great, no doubt, but they also have Thomas and Rask behind them.

The relief will be there.  The systems change will be an absolutely massive relief for them.
