Remember when Nazem Kadri showed up to the Marlies‘ training camp negligibly fatter than he probably should have been all fat and ugly and gross and out-of-shape? Well, Dallas Eakins threw a big, cheesy CTRL-Z on that situation Wednesday. Apparently Kadri’s re-committed himself to hardcore fitness in the last few weeks. (While some simmer in silence, wondering what the hell he paid Gary Roberts for).

Dallas is impressed. Said Eakins, with a visual I metaphor did not need:

“He has not just dipped his toe in the water, he’s taken off his clothes and jumped in naked. He is fully ready to try this and he’s on a great roll right now.

“What happens with some of these guys is they’re so skilled that they’ve never really had to put in hard work. I think they’ll say ‘Well I always worked hard’ and they did, they worked as hard as they had to, but as you keep progressing and guys get older and they’re stronger and they come in from all different parts of the world, suddenly the base of the group is much higher than what you’re used to. I think it’s taken Naz a little bit of time to get used to this.”

Kadri says much of the same, because…what else is he going to say?

“It’s something I’ve just got to wrap my head around that the season isn’t just for playing hockey. It’s for maintaining your body strength and everything that comes with it in the gym. I think maybe in previous years the hockey season was just for playing hockey I thought, the offseason was just for working out. Now I’m starting to intertwine them both. I think I’m going to start to get some great results.”

Can we go back to this being a relative non-issue now? (And somehow, unfortunately, I feel like this week’s positive follow-up won’t generate near the headlines the initial story did. Or a Tweet from Don Cherry praising how good the Leafs are at saving prospects from themselves, as opposed to just obliterating them before they leave Ricoh).

Before we get to the links, one awesome, late night (literally!) note from Wednesday:

The President just slapped you across the [censored] face, Gary. The President.

YA’LL SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THIS DONE!

Thursday links!

-Remarkable, awesome, candid post (with hilarious infographics!) at TLN describing the real business factors driving the lockout. This guy’s bang on right. And even though he’s saying it’s not greed, the alternative factor at play here (financial formula, essentially) makes the NHL seem so much more evil and inhuman. A $2,000,000 Renaissance-era painting couldn’t capture the lockout’s essence this well.

-The New York Islanders are leaving Nassau and will move to the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn after 2015. Where they will play. For TWENTY FIVE YEARS. Sometimes I think Charles Wang skipped one day of class in business school, and the title of the prof’s slideshow was “How to Not be the Guy Assuming All the Longterm Risk in a Deal.”

-The NHL apparently let some GMs talk to their players, presumably as a workaround to getting their message past Donald Fehr. Who ya gonna call? UNION BUSTERS!

-I’m not sure if this is an article somewhere yet, but according to a Mirtle tweet, the Marlies will play at the Air Canada Center on Boxing Day with ticket prices ranging from $10-$45. So, uh…Merry Christmas infuriated and frustrated NHL fans, I guess?

-Bettman says a full NHL season happening is no longer likely. There’s a bunch of quotes in there I could pull out and just absolutely [censored] up the [censored], but I sort of don’t care anymore.

I’ve seen college and university grads at my workplace who’s spelling and math skills are atrocious…I look at my own two kids education and wonder what happened?? The basics aren’t even taught anymore…remember writing and printing with 3 line paper??..proper letter formation etc…non existent today……basic math skills??…adding ,subtracting, division, multiplication, fractions and percent..kids today don’t have clue without a calculator…they can still read…but overall the education has never been worse….two big reasons…government has dumbed down the curriculum and way too many teachers who are in the profession for the wrong reason…

Couldn’t agree more. Sometimes I feel I can tell the age of a poster on here just by the sentence structure they embrace and use consistently. There are no consequences for bad grammar or poor math skills in todays society. I’m a notoriously poor speller, but I do make the effort to fix my mistakes.  I doubt many of us could pass one of my old grade 11 math exams now.

You missed out on the biggest reasons, parents do not demand that their kids work hard and teachers are not allowed to discipline kids or even flunk them.  No one has to work in our society til after high school when it is too late.  Its society that has screwed up the system…bring back the strap, allow failures, stream dumb kids into trades, expel punks, and hold the parents accountable.

Allow failure. And trade school are great proposals. Trade Schools are where the future rich are going to come from. Those skills are going to be in high demand. Social media grads are not.

So Odd. Sportsnet especially has a chance to create another hockey advertising market, So does Leafs TV and they pass it up. Not the way to develop a business. There is a market for televised AHL games.

Parents play a role..but they aren’t the biggest reason…Parents don’t have a say on the curriculum being taught….parents aren’t doing the teaching day to day..parents didn’t make the rules that have lead to the current situation…Teachers and their unions did…

To me its not rocket science…reading..writing and math should be the foundation of any education system…..

BTW…trades aren’t for dumb kids….many trades have become high tech now..computer aided drafting (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) are all part of the process now….most skilled tradesmen have above average math and computer skills and work with modern high tech machinery and equipment…

My suggestion is more of a worse case scenario. Part of the way I think in business. Imagine the worse and see if it’s plausible. If it is then you’ve got problems. And for the NHL, another league really screws them in significant ways. But it would take a concerted effort by 4-5 multimillionaires to make it a reality. Or a large group of former players banding together.

I’d add, Physical fitness to reading and writing. Full year school would be a start. Classes till 5 would be another. Even if the last hour was supervised homework time.

When I went to highschool I took courses like auto mechanics…metal shop.. wood shop….drafting….machining…welding…electricity….pneumatics..these courses provided a great foundation for what I am doing today….sadly most of these courses aren’t even available anymore….

Its strange how things have change…back when we were 16-18 years old we would be tinkering with cars…building things….now a days if you ask a 16-17 year old to check the oil on a car or lawn tractor they give you a blank stare….ask them to do a load of laundry?? Huh??? pre heat the overn? hey say how??…its down right scary!!!! I’m making a point to try and teach my kids some life skills..but man…things sure have changed since I was a kid…I thank god I received the education and work experience I did growing up….

If you can, force them to cook dinner once a week. Like a real dinner. Prepare a roast chicken. Otherwise when they move out they’ll just end up buying prepared stuff or worse eating out all the time. It’s such an easy trap to fall into. And these are just basic life skills.
