Regardless, the LA theory is a silly one in my opinion.  The cap is likely dropping to the 60 million range, and LA will be a team struggling to stay underneath that – not looking to add 5-6 million dollar wingers.

The point is, you can pretty much count on a top 3 pick being an impact player fairly soon.  So why would players be upset about that?  The only finish I could see being upsetting would be a 9th place scenario.
    -
This disconnect largely comes from a misunderstanding about what Carlyle is.  In my time watching the Ducks, I never saw a defender like Schenn have any success under RC, yet for some reason Leaf fans thought he would resurrect Komisarek and Schenn.  RC is all about skill first on defense.  And contrary to popular belief, he’s also never had a monstrously large team full of gritty grinders to work with either.  When they won the Cup, they did it with Parros, and average-undersized bottom six guys.-
    Burke’s trading has been solid.

Well, I would predict the Leafs to finish closer to the 5th overall pick again than a top 3 pick. But anyways, I know getting a high pick would be a positive, but if you’re Phil Kessel, and miss the playoffs with the Leafs every year you’ve been there, would you not at least consider heading to a legitimate playoff contender instead of waiting around for things to get better in Toronto? I think may at least want to test the market.

Yea, of course, but that principle never applies when the situation is reversed and other players on bad teams approach UFA; magically.  I’m not going to worry about it.  If Kessel and Lupul leave it’s because they don’t want to be here.  In that case, Burke will trade them for the best return he can, and we’ll move forward.  Not the end of the world either way, but I don’t see either leaving.
    -
Leaf fans are fixated on the idea all of a sudden that players only go to contenders, or only want to play for teams that are already great and don’t need them.  It’s simply not the case. Just because Nash chose NYR doesn’t mean everyone is looking for an easy ride. Like I said, Lupul seems to want to be a leader here, and Kessel seems like the kind of guy where happiness outside of hockey is very important to him in making those kinds of decisions.  Remember, these guys set up their lives in the cities they play in.  It’s not as simple as “who is closest to winning the Cup this year – I need to see if they want me”.
    -
They also take it personally when the team loses.  I find it more likely that Kessel and Lupul are saying “If only I could have done ________ different, maybe we could have done it….” than “If only I was on a better team….”

    Trick or treating, NHL style:

Kids go up to Gary Bettman’s house, say, “Trick or treat!”

Bettman appears, dressed as Count Von Count. “Here you go,” he says, and gives the kids packages of prunes.

One little kid says, “Gee, mister, can’t you do better than that?”

And Bettman responds: “What? My prunes aren’t good enough for you? Bill [Daly], call everybody on the block! Trick or Treating’s over!” George Malik ‏

I don’t have a problem with people’s assessments evolving or positions changing, but to be clear, weren’t you on the front line of those with concerns that Kessel might want leave if the Leafs don’t make the play-offs and that the team needed to deal with it before his NTC kicks in, not too long ago.

I still think if those rumors are true, that they need to be dealt with and he needs to be traded as soon as possible.  To me, that is an issue that is separate from the lack of winning or just wanting to go where he won’t be needed as much as soon as he can.  I just think that if they leave it will be for reasons we don’t really fully know – not just, you know, cuz the Laffs suk!
