Winter Classic was already spoiled

Winter Classic was already spoiled

With no negotiations taking place in the past week-plus and a $250,000 payment due to the University of Michigan Friday, the Winter Classic officially got the axe today.

For me, the Winter Classic was spoiled the moment it became apparent the two sides were willing to cancel games and use the fans as a pawn in their greedy game. Say the season came back in time to save the Classic – would it have felt right jumping right back on board and supporting the league in its biggest event of the regular season?

Down Goes Brown nails it with this series of tweets:

I think your are correct in stating Luongo has trade value. I just don’t see it translating into a top prospect. Vancouver’s top six is pretty set. Bozak and one of our D prospects might make more sense. I would be absolutely shocked if Burke moved Colborne.

Also, why did the Marlies suck the big one this weekend in your opinion?

Tough to say. To me it seems like too many players being rotated in and out of the lineup due to strike induced extra roster. I gave a summary of Thursday’s game early in this thread, the biggest thing I noticed is plenty of playmakers on the team, but no clear sniper. Frattin should help, but he will be up with Leafs if/when they get playing. It just feels like the guys know if they play poorly there are 4 or 5 players waiting to get in the next game. Something has to give.

I do know one thing. Like Johnson said in the tweet I posted . Daley ad Fehr are now agreeing in public and being cordial about it . That’s big in my mind considering how much sniping and rhetoric has been thrown around before yesterday . We might finally have some traction going forward.

I haven’t seen much of them this year, but another thing nobody really says is that Eakins has never been a very offensively focused coach, and no surprise, we’ve had a real difficulty getting offense.

Colborne isn’t an elite prospect. He’s a good one, but he isn’t unmovable. He probably ends up being a 2nd/3rd line center in the long run. Our biggest need (by a mile) is at the goaltending position. If there’s an elite goalie available, we have to be willing to give up something of value for him. Colborne alone is actually a pretty small price to pay for a guy of Luongo’s caliber. His age and contract length would be the only reason we wouldn’t have to pay even more.

Yes, the offence was pretty dismal, although I only viewed one game so hard to draw too many conclusions. The team was successful last year with a similar core group so perhaps just too many players moving in and out of the line up without clearly defined roles being developed.

Ugh, Luongo is old and nobody else wants him.  It’s a GIGANTIC price to pay for something that’s worthless.  Consider that we gave up less for Phaneuf, a top two defender (easily still the most valuable position in the league), and he was only 25 years old – almost a full decade younger than Luongo.

Im not convinced Lou is an elite goalie. 30 starting position in the league say the top five goalies are considered elite. Is Lou a top five goalie in the league  Im not arguing that Joe shouldn’t be traded for him. I just don’t think Lou is an elite goalie.

I would have agreed with you until I watched Colborne play last week. I was really impressed with how he controlled the play. His skating has improved as well. I think we need a big, talented centre as much as a goalie. So my preference is to see us move someone other than big Joe if we do make a play for Lou.

You misread that.  I realize that they are only 6 years apart, but Phaneuf has been here 2 and a half years.  We acquired Phaneuf at age 25.  We would be acquiring Luongo just before age 34 – a 9 year difference.  Almost a decade. And Luongo plays a position much more prone to deteriorating, whereas defenders often step into their primes at 30+.

I think you will see this package sent to Vancouver for LOU and Schroder

    Scrivens
    Blacker or franson
    Lombardi or connolly
    Bozak

Marlies have a lot of dman in the waiting. If franson is dealt, look for Ranger to take his place.

Don’t think they have any need for Scrivens, unless they plan to run 3 goalies or lose him on waivers. Problem with moving Franson or Blacker is that we have very few right side defenders in the system.

Okay, I didn’t even check it, but that only furthers my point. Even closer to a decade difference.  If Luongo was 24, then whatever, obviously there would be a gigantic bidding war for this guy.

Cam , I’m thinking you see them move a goalie (flip scrivens or lack) for a pick or prospect.

What another career AHLer? How does that help the Leafs?

The Leafs need top 6 forwards, top 3-4 dmen and a starting goalie, not AHL players.

I don’t think Lou is the long-term answer, but he is a solid goalie who should put up 3 or 4 decent seasons for whichever team he goes to. We need to show guys like Kessel, Lupul, Phaneuf that Leafs are serious about winning, so Lou might strategically make sense to entice them to re-sign. We do need better goaltending, period. I just don’t think we need to sell the farm to get a 34 year-old with a potentially bad contract (CBA results pending), and I think Gillis knows he won’t get a huge return.
