Winter Classic was already spoiled

Winter Classic was already spoiled

With no negotiations taking place in the past week-plus and a $250,000 payment due to the University of Michigan Friday, the Winter Classic officially got the axe today.

For me, the Winter Classic was spoiled the moment it became apparent the two sides were willing to cancel games and use the fans as a pawn in their greedy game. Say the season came back in time to save the Classic – would it have felt right jumping right back on board and supporting the league in its biggest event of the regular season?

Down Goes Brown nails it with this series of tweets:

Part of the reason we’re having a hard time getting ahead is because the other teams in our division are doing a real good job in the management department, too.  Four of the top five guys from our division.

I’m sure there are other teams that would be interested in acquiring him if he didn’t have such a short list of places he’s willing to go. Vancouver isn’t just going to give him away, though. He’s a great player, and we NEED a guy like him on our team.

Gave up less for Phaneuf? That’s just not true at all. White was emerging as a solid top 4 dman, and Stajan and Hagman were both useful players. Not spectacular, but useful. Stajan then was like Bozak is now: a third liner putting up second line numbers in a first line role.

We still won the Phaneuf deal, but the pieces we gave up for him weren’t the crap they are often made out to be. A 24-year-old top 4 dman has more value than a 22-year-old forward prospect that likely becomes a 2nd or 3rd liner in the long run.

We’d have to sign Ranger to an NHL deal, first. He’s only under contract with the Marlies right now.

White was the only piece of any value.  Don’t kid yourself on the others, because you have to take contract status into account.  It cost Calgary 14 million to retain Stajan, whereas Colborne will probably play for very little for the next 4 years.  Again, it’s a moot point anyways, because the age difference in the players is so massive.  If we move Colborne for him, it will be the most expensive goalie acquisition since Luongo himself was moved – in his prime. Why is it the Leafs always have to pay more for every position – and more importantly, why are the fans okay with it?

It isn’t exactly “selling the farm” to move one good prospect.

Boston, Montreal, Ottawa – all have great prospects in the system too.  Even though Burke has built a strong prospect base, I think part of the reason we haven’t taken off yet is because we’re in a really well managed division.  We have a couple stud OHL defenders, and all the other studs in that league just happen to be prospects in our division.

Ok now I see what your talking about . Good point because as good as our pool seems its still has lot of growing to do. I wanna see a lot more forward depth in the future.

It would really help if we had a bad team in our division, but everyone seems to do everything right.

Bear in mind that the option to the dead cap space is to recalibrate those long terms deals so it has a rolling 5 or 6 year average which deals with the real salaries being paid short term.  That pushes up the cap hit sooner rather than later and reduces salary cap available now rather than at the end of those deals.  One way or the other the players have to accept that they participated in deals that were intended to circumvent the cap.

I wonder how quickly Burke will move to rid the team of the deadwood or will he simply wait till the summer? It will be interesting to see if he goes full bore after a playoff spot or not. Next yrs draft is loaded with top quality forwards . It would be nice to add at least one.

Like I said my view is this is more important to Bettman controlling  the owners as opposed to the player salary . Sure they will bitch a little about it but I doubt its will be that big an issue for them.

Colborne isn’t THAT much to pay. Goalies of Luongo’s caliber aren’t often moved at all. Not many teams can afford to move them. Vancouver just got lucky enough to end up with two really good goalies. We wouldn’t be “paying more” than other teams would have to pay for such a good player.

When Luongo was originally moved, Vancouver had to give up Bertuzzi (coming off a point-per-game season) and a 20+ minute/night Dman in his mid-20s in Bryan Allen. That’s WAY more value than Colborne alone. Luongo’s value has decreased since then, obviously, but his return dropping all the way down to just one good prospect would accurately reflect this.

Well, right now it’s not looking like a lot of Marlies are really earning NHL jobs, so he might not be in such a rush.  I would not be surprised to see him acquire Luongo and move forward without much other change.  Then he can deal Connolly and others at the deadline and absorb 50% of their salaries.

I agree about this years prospects. Not only does it seem like a more talented top 5-10 but again it has guys that would fill the need we have at the #1C position. A top 5 pick again (as much as it would suck to finish that low) would help us in the long run. MacKinnon, Lazar and Monahan seem to have less question marks than last years top centers Galy (injury questions), Grigo (character questions) and Forsberg (played wing and centre so could be a winger in the NHL).

Again though, that’s still not fully admitting the context of the situation.  This player makes 7 million dollars a year for the next 6 years, and will likely play all of that before retiring.  He’s turning 34, and we now operate in a cap system where we’ve see the value of players severely impacted by contracts.  If you’re going to give up Colborne, you can probably go after a guy like Hiller, or Halak – guys who will probably be good for a decade still, vs. 3 or 4 years.

McKenzie now reporting what MLHS has known for weeks.  That the “honoring” of contracts stuff was rubbish, as SPC’s outline the potential for CBA changes.

Yipper and for me that is the single most important thing that the Leafs get out of this deal.  It puts them on a more level playing field (sheet of ice?) with UFAs going forward.
