Winter Classic was already spoiled

Winter Classic was already spoiled

With no negotiations taking place in the past week-plus and a $250,000 payment due to the University of Michigan Friday, the Winter Classic officially got the axe today.

For me, the Winter Classic was spoiled the moment it became apparent the two sides were willing to cancel games and use the fans as a pawn in their greedy game. Say the season came back in time to save the Classic – would it have felt right jumping right back on board and supporting the league in its biggest event of the regular season?

Down Goes Brown nails it with this series of tweets:

If what Dreger is reporting is true then the League agreeing to pay for those contracts is a gain for the players . Frankly I want to see more details but as it appears now its a major concession by the League . I wasn’t really expecting that.

As a big Kadri supporter, I’d be okay with trading big Joe if Naz had shown more to start the season.  Right now, big Joe has got the inside track as between the two of them IMO.   Because we are so desperate for a big (and hopefully #1) C, I can see Colborne being even more valuable to the Leafs than Frattin.  Still don’t think we have to give up any of the three of them though.

Hopefully but my gut tells me the quality of the  FA pool is going to diminish. The will likely be a flurry of moves as teams get down to the lower cap but how many really good players that could help us will be moved? I say not many. This deal will likely put a lot of older players out of work.

I just want a fair shot at Tavares and Stamkos in due course.  The Leafs would be better off if the UFA eligibility remains at 7 years.

Oh yeah, and Getlaf and Perry next summer.

Why would Anaheim move Hiller? They’d just be fucking themselves over if they moved their starting goalie. Unlike the Canucks, they don’t have a young guy ready to take his place.

I wouldn’t move Halak if I were the Blues. At least not until Elliot proves that last year wasn’t a fluke.

Luongo may be the only starting goalie available.

Why would Anaheim do any of the stupid shit they’ve done since Burke left?  They’re probably one of the top 3 worst managed teams in the league since that point. They have Gibson, Bobkov and they truly believe in this Fasth character they acquired this summer. They are unduly confident in their goaltending pipeline.

If Luongo is the only one available, and the price is a top prospect, than we wait and see what we have in Reimer.  Time is on our side, in my opinion.  We are in no rush.  We aren’t going to win the Cup this year, and Luongo may only push us far enough to miss out on a top draft pick.

We’ll see.  Anaheim cannot afford Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan.  They may trade Ryan, but Perry and Getzlaf commanding half of their forward budget will be bad for them.  I think they’ll have to choose, and that they may move Getzlaf at the deadline this year after locking up Perry.
    -
And honestly, if it were me, that’s what I would do with that franchise right now.  Some good prospects in the system (Etem, DSP, Gibson, Bobkov, Lindholm, Fowler).  Trading two of their big 3 could reset them for the future the way Philly did with Richards and Carter.  As is, I don’t think they’ll be able to afford to surround Getzlaf and Perry with enough quality to take a step forward.

I also think Stamkos and Tavares both fully intended to test free agency when they signed their last deals for 5 years vs. going for a homerun 10-15 year contract. But we’ll see if they feel the same way when they come to the end of those deals.

Just my feeling . We have seen enormous entrenchment with owners re-upping FA’s over recent yrs and now the big flurry of signing those 2nd contracts as well . There have been some exception with the likes of Richards ,Parise and Suter but for the most part FA is not what it used to be.

No way the Islanders or the Lightning are going to let Stammer or Tavares go nor do I think for one minute either of them want to move. The Islanders have a new building and that will make a huge difference for them.

and @Burtonboy:disqus We’ll see how the new Brooklyn Islanders do.  I just have this sense that Johnny T might be the one Toronto boy that wants to step up and be that home town hero. Nash clearly didn’t have it in him.

Even with Stamkos, when he becomes a UFA, Martin St. Louis will be long gone, so the dynamics in Tampa may be very different then.

P.S.  Plus with global warming Tampa may be completely underwater by then. ;)

Rupert is out with a shoulder injury – undetermined length.  Sparks stoned the Knights the last 2 times they played.

This is true, but I’m kind of hopeful the term limits force players to consider more than how long they can blackmail their current owner into giving them.  If every team can only offer you essentially the same deal, it’s more about where you want to live, what kind of market you want to play for, and so forth.

Islanders are still going to have an empty building, terrible ownership, worse management, and be the least important sports team in New York.  I’ll make my Parise bet with you on Tavares.  I feel very strongly he will leave in 4 and a half years when the time comes – if he doesn’t force a trade in the final year of the deal.
-Stamkos may be saved by the Yzerman’s arrival, but that’s another team with a terrible ownership situation.  What’s his face is only there to earn favors from the league so he can get an expansion franchise, or re-locate someone to Hartford.
