NHL to PA: “Let’s give them something to talk about”

It looks like the NHL and Players Association are ready to resume talks this week (most likely Tuesday), and now we can briefly have hope again.

Certainly, a marathon talk between Bill Daly and Steve Fehr is a good start, and it gives even more reason for optimism that nothing was leaked from this meeting.

Where I lose some of my optimism is in a) the fact that this deal will rely on Jeremy Jacobs’ ability to compromise, and b) we live in a world where players value the opinion of clowns like Allan Walsh.

Neither side is content to reach the compromise we all envision for them, and both sides will need to let go of this “trying to win” philosophy that has cost them a quarter of a seasons revenue.

I’ll cap this rant early, but root for radio silence on both sides (an understandable challenge for the PA with 700+ members).

Lockout will affect World Junior Team Roster
There could be a few more Leafs in the mix if players like Nugent-Hopkins, Huberdeau, D.Hamilton, R.Murphy and Strome weren’t locks for the team.

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Garret Sparks eyes Team USA
Sparks is considered by many to be the best bet for the backup job on the junior team. If he has a few more games like the one last Friday, he’ll be a lock.

I’m from Manitoba originally, but have lived in Minnesota for 8 years now (married an American, have a couple kids now, etc.) This is home now (although Canada will always be home too :) . This is my first federal election as an American citizen, and I didn’t vote. I’m personally disgusted with both political parties. I’m sick of Obama’s class warfare and big government philosophy, and I find myself unable to identify with the GOP related to most social issues (and definitely related to foreign policy).

The country is clearly on the wrong track (even 4 years removed from George Bush), but partisanship continues to blind both sides to being able to find common ground and actual solutions. I have zero confidence that Obama or Romney can get this country on the right track. I just find myself unable to engage anymore. However this ends up I’m nervous the country is in for some tough times going forward.

there aren’t many things that you can point to as being part of Canadian tradition. HNIC is one of those things that you can point to and say, hey thats Canada right there.

I understand your feelings.    The same thing happens here sometimes.  I wish politicians would put their party politics aside for the good of the country.  It seems some of them will screw the whole country if it hurts their opponent.

I personally have no problem with big government policies.  The countries with a rising standard of living in the world right now have big governments and big taxes, but their people are generally much happier and less fraught with stress and mental anxieties.

I live in Houston. I agree with you about Partisanship, and the desire to prevent the other party from enacting change. There is no desire to move the country forward in any unified way. Word of caution, do not let the family get really sick, or you will see first hand what is really f–ked.  :)

I’m not an expert in American politics by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel that there are far too many influential bodies that corrupt the integrity of the democratic process in the states. Bias media, big business and corporate interests, and the constant demands of an already disjointed population in terms of race, extreme political views, and wealth. The spectrum between left and right has become so far apart and fanatical that arguments such as “dont be a communist/socialist” that dont amount to anything productive, are normal in discourse between both sides. A successful government borrows political theories and thoughts from all over and doesn’t limit itself to a narrow scope of mind. What I think im trying to say is that, for change to really happen in the states, a fundamental shift has to occur at the core of American politics. The population and its people have to learn to be more tolerant and accepting of new ideas and thoughts, create true accountability, and put an effort forward to function for the good of the majority and not the 1% that control everything. This is all very idealistic, but we have to remember it was with these ideals in mind that this democracy was drafted into existence. It has just become increasingly more corrupted over time..

DML: IMO biggest danger is the power of the big political lobbyists. They have both sides of the isle in their pockets. Don’t need to say much more.

My main issue with big government is as it relates to economic policy. I really believe that incentive breeds excellence. The government’s job should be to foster an environment that creates incentive and opportunity, not dependance and entitlement. I’m no economic expert, but it just seems pretty straight forward. Demonizing those who are successful and the depending on redistribution of wealth (revenue sharing!) doesn’t lend itself to long-term economic health and success imo.

Yea, I don’t think that has anything to do with it though.  I identified the same way politically even when I was in law school and never really imagined myself in this situation.

The short-comings of the American health system are well documented. I would say that I have seen that the quality of care is much better here though. That said, still prefer the Canadian health care system, mostly because I hate paying so much for health coverage that we never use…

Well, I see why a lot of people see it that way.  There is certainly some merit to the notion that competition breeds innovation.  However, I think the idea that an unleashed economy will produce this competition is one of the greatest myths the right wing has ever managed to conceive (2nd only to the Jesusification of politics).
    -
All the competition that bred excellence and innovation in capitalist North America came about during wars.  Since the rest of the world has caught up, the only thing competition has bred is a need to send jobs overseas and undercut the competition (and with it the middle class) by removing labor from the equation.
    -
Remember, all the best parts of America were built by taxing the shit out of the richest people in the country.  Coming out for WWII the top 10% of earners were being taxed as much as 40%.  Today they contribute a tiny fraction of that, and have developed numerous ways to ship their earnings out of America’s borders before governments can re-distribute any of it.
    -
But I’m not trying to convince you – just thought it was an interesting talking point.
