NHL to PA: “Let’s give them something to talk about”

It looks like the NHL and Players Association are ready to resume talks this week (most likely Tuesday), and now we can briefly have hope again.

Certainly, a marathon talk between Bill Daly and Steve Fehr is a good start, and it gives even more reason for optimism that nothing was leaked from this meeting.

Where I lose some of my optimism is in a) the fact that this deal will rely on Jeremy Jacobs’ ability to compromise, and b) we live in a world where players value the opinion of clowns like Allan Walsh.

Neither side is content to reach the compromise we all envision for them, and both sides will need to let go of this “trying to win” philosophy that has cost them a quarter of a seasons revenue.

I’ll cap this rant early, but root for radio silence on both sides (an understandable challenge for the PA with 700+ members).

Lockout will affect World Junior Team Roster
There could be a few more Leafs in the mix if players like Nugent-Hopkins, Huberdeau, D.Hamilton, R.Murphy and Strome weren’t locks for the team.

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Garret Sparks eyes Team USA
Sparks is considered by many to be the best bet for the backup job on the junior team. If he has a few more games like the one last Friday, he’ll be a lock.

Why do you highly doubt it? The players have no incentive to sign early. It’s not like they are risking injury playing a whole season and waiting for July 1. They would just have to sit and wait for multiple teams to make offers and up their value. IMO.

Just can’t see the Ducks allowing the 2 most important players on the team to get to FA . They will pony up the big bucks to keep these guys in the fold. Also I would say those guys really like the California lifestyle.

Going to UFA always puts the spotlight and incredible pressure on the player.  Why go through all that if you’re happy with your team, the city you live in and the amount of money you’re being offered.  If Perry is offered $50M over 6 years, is it really worth going through FA to get 55M over 6?

Take a guy like Kessel.  While he gets a lot of shit by the minority of Leaf fans, he is widely appreciated by most.  Notwithstanding the TO shyte, he might be happier signing here than signing elsewhere where the fans might even be more critical of him every time he doesn’t backcheck to their liking.

Look at Parise and Suter – both will become darlings of Minnesota for a while, but for a long time will be disliked by not only the NJ and Nashville fans, but the fans of many other teams that didn’t win the FA shootout.

Yip, beach, tanned female asses and hockey…the perfect combo. Speaking of the CA and relaxed lifestyle, a co-worker in my office grew up with Michael Ryder and they still chat from to time. Ryder told Brian that Dallas is the best place he’s ever played, he loves it there, the weather, the ability to go to a movie or grocery store without getting hastled and the lack of media pressure just lets him play hockey and not worry about the tabloids, like Montreal, Toronto and other hotbeds. He’s a Leaf fan at heart but says it would not be one of his desired location because of the pressure that goes with it. Same goes for Luoungo and Nash I’d say.

  • Bob’s your uncle

Matt Duchene probably has a bright future, but doesn’t address our need for some size, 5′ 11″. Also he had 24 points in 39 games before getting injured last season. When he came back he finished with 4 points in his last 19 games. For that reason alone I wouldn’t consider trading Morgan Rielly for Duchene.

I can understand why guys would think that way, on the other hand, anyone who wins in Toronto is set to be king for life, and even after that.

I read a few things about him on some AV’s message boards that made me wonder . Attitude, don’t like playing defensive hockey and would prefer to play all run and gun. More then a few fans seemed a bit pissed with him.

Same here bro, I would kill for the chance to be a Leaf too, screw the media, just do your dam best and play hard every night….imagine them getting to the playoffs in the next year or two….the city is going to explode and if you dont want to be a part of that, well, you dont have a heart beat IMO.

I’d generally agree with that.  I suppose if BB thought Duchene was likely to be the next Stevie Y, a great player, but not the superstars that Gretzky and Lemieux were, then I’d have to give him the benefit of the doubt. After all, he took Rielly to begin with, when many, me included, thought he was crazy for doing so.
