A Hopeful Tuesday
Share

There might have been a little somethin’ somethin’ crowding your Twitter feed last night, forcing you to miss the updates (or lack thereof.. in this case, possibly a good thing) from the latest round of NHL/NHLPA meetings. No word about what went down, but the negotiating session lasted seven hours and ended with plans to resume talks today (Wednesday).

Considering the last meeting between the two sides took about 10 minutes and preceded two weeks of stalemate, this seems to be a good sign. They’re talking at length, and a process that’s been riddled with posturing has broken for some welcomed silence and secrecy.

Perhaps a few missed paycheques and the cancelation of the Winter Classic has injected the necessary urgency to arrive at an agreement that really isn’t that far out of reach.

Or maybe I’m just brimming with hope after last night.

I guess discussing political demographics is kind of a form of stereotyping (stereotypes are usually oversimplified and harmful, though). Perhaps I should have prefaced it more with statistics and caveats? 60% of white humans who may or may not have been hard working people voted for Romney?

Maybe they don’t have to put a term limit in, but rather just maintain the clause they’re grandfathering in about the signing team retaining the cap hit after retirement.   That plus the lack of variance would probably cap out those deals, but it’s still hard to say.

Listen very carefully – I am not branding anyone.  One cannot be branded white – you either are, or you aren’t.  One cannot be branded into an age demographic – you are, or you aren’t.  One cannot be be branded religious – you are, or you aren’t, and in this case, those who are tend to be exceedingly, fanatically vocal about it.  One cannot be branded uneducated – you are, or you aren’t.
    -
Again, these are measurable qualities.  These are facts.  I am sorry you have a difficult time accepting them, but laying them out does not make one a bigot.  This is like getting mad at a scale for revealing your weight.  The scale isn’t branding you fat, thin or whatever else – you are what you are.

    Here’s a stereotype for you:
The Pew survey adds to a wave of surveys and studies showing that GOP-sympathizers are better informed, more intellectually consistent, more open-minded, more empathetic and more receptive to criticism than their fellow Americans who support the Democratic Party. Republicans fare substantially better than Democrats on several questions in the survey, as is typically the case in surveys about political knowledge,” said the study, which noted that Democrats outscored Republicans on five questions by an average of 4.6 percent.
The widest partisan gap in the survey came in at 30 points when only 46 percent of Democrats — but 76 percent of Republicans —- correctly described the GOP as “the party generally more supportive of reducing the size of federal government.”
The widest difference that favored Democrats was only 8 percent, when 59 percent of Republicans and 67 percent of Democrats recognized the liberal party as “more [supportive] of reducing the defense budget.”
The survey quizzed 1,000 people, including 239 Republicans and 334 Democrats.
However, Pew’s data suggests that the Democrats’ low average rating likely is a consequence of its bipolar political coalition, which combines well-credentialed post-graduate progressives who score well in quizzes with a much larger number of poorly educated supporters, who score badly.

lol, 1000?  That is nothing.  A truly worthless survey.  You could conduct the same survey in 10 different parts of the country and get 10 completely different sets of results.

The thing is…I can have heated debates with my family members and some of my best friends on politics…but I would never question them as human beings…they are caring, compassionate people who just want the best for their country…..we just have different beliefs on how to get there….when the political debate I still hold a huge amount of respect for these people….and thats my point….democrate…republican…liberal..conservative…both sides have thier fair share of good and bad…and yes both sides have extremists…but attempting to brand, demonize or villafy the people who support one side or the other is really quite juvenile…..

As I’ve said before, in the end the most important “get” for NHL on player contracts is killing back-diving deals (front-loaded deals)When push comes to shove, all along the belief is that the NHL would be willing I think to live without many of its player contracts demands

I’m struggling to understand your objection to ‘branding,’ Y.  Isn’t a political affiliation a type of brand, and don’t people generally display it with pride?

Alec: I am having a fairly frequent problem of not being able to post while still being logged in. I post fine for a period of time, I do not logout but at certain points when I go to post I can only do so as a guest. There is no indication I have been logged out, just get error messages when I try to post, and so have to complete as a guest. Weird if nothing else.

Pretty hard to dispute facts, but this isn’t what I said, and I’ll thank you not to make things up.  I said that the demographics show this TENDS to be the case.  I did not, and nor did Alec, brand every single Republican voter under these categories.  However, we cannot ignore the reality that these qualities TEND to be possessed by those who vote for that party.
