The easiest Morning Mashups to write are the ones where there’s nothing to talk about. The toughest Morning Mashups to write are the ones where there’s nothing to talk about.

I’m literally writing this as Wednesday’s CBA meetings are ending (according to the Dan Rosen Tweet that just rolled in). They will meet again tomorrow, it’s been confirmed, and likely with the same modus operandi of not talking to anyone when they’re over. I guess we’re supposed to be impressed by this.

Really?

I mean, the way negotiations are happening now is the way they should have been happening in July. But they couldn’t have done that, could they? They had to posture for months and months so each side would know the other’s serious (as if they didn’t), cancel a bunch of games and make fall joyless so each side would know the other’s really serious (as if they didn’t), cancel the Winter Classic to ensure there were no events of moral and emotional leverage left and reduce the situation to pure manipulation of a projected revenue curve (as if it always wasn’t), and…ah, crap. The apathy really does make it near impossible to care, let alone write about it sarcastically.

I guess we should be optimistic? I mean, for the longest time, they were posturing nonsense. At least now, they’re posturing with – supposedly – positive progression.

Here’s hoping a flood of “today was more positive than expected” Tweets roll in from anonymous sources. A few initial ones suggest Make Whole was discussed. That’s good? On the other hand, this would get resolved real fast if the players would just forget it and let Bill Daly take some of their money back.

Come on. Look at him. He needs it. To kill Superman.

Unfortunately, in the case of a second consecutive poorly-scheduled-Wednesday, I’ve got a few major priorities that have totally usurped the NHL in my life which will prevent me from following the evening’s results too closely . Including, but not limited to: work, friends, and a midnight screening of Skyfall.

Here are some Thursday morning links!

-Morgan Rielly‘s knee injury, in a roundabout way, may have made him stronger. I know that’s a cliched thing to say, actually, the most cliched thing you can possibly say about a sports injury. But we all realize one of the best defensive prospects in the NHL is a Toronto Maple Leaf, right?

-The Marlies play the Houston Aeros tonight at 8pm. I’m sure there will be a whole mess of helpful information about it on marlies.ca.

-According to ESPN, Mats Sundin was the ultimate team player. I feel like this is a hockey-related ESPN piece we can actually take seriously.

-Not sure if we’ve had this posted yet (I’m sure we have), but Don Cherry wonders why Luongo would want to come here. Is there some hilarious bias in the layout of the reader poll, or some serious CSS error that everyone is getting?

-NHL sponsors are starting to get pissed. Good. Please, get more pissed. More publicly.

“At the age of 16 and entering into his first year in Junior A with the Bellville Bobcats, Gilmour was a small and skinny 5’9 and 135 pound defensemen. After just 3 games on defense and not impressing, Doug was move to forward where he went on to play his remaining 3 years in junior. Note that 3 years in junior means he was passed on as an 18 year old in. After posting just 35 points in 51 games in his first eligible draft year, Doug showed critics that he wasn’t one to give up, posting 119 points in 67 games to earn himself what a seemingly “against all odds” selection as a 19 year old in the 7th round of the 1982 draft by the St. Louis Blues. Good selection? I think so.”.

That would be nice, but at the same time I would rather see us make the playoffs and attract a guy like Getzlaf.

That would do soo much more for the organization.

And even with an early knock out we could snag a guy like Curtis Lazar.

Who has had top 5 status, and continues to slump.

    My theory:

    1. Trade for Luongo to have an improved goaltending.
    2. Use improved goaltending to make the playoffs.
    3. Use improved goaltending and playoffs to lure Getzlaf.
    4. Use Getzlaf to lure Perry,

Thats the story…I remember when Gilmour broke in with the Blues…he really got my attention…but over the years he just kept maturing. When the Leafs acquired him, I couldn’t believe it. Burns and Gilmour came on board around the same time and I remember thinking…wow.

McKinnon did look really good. On Huberdeau’s second goal, I am not sure MacKinnon even looked at Huberdeau before making the super quick, absolutely perfect side door pass.

Morning Gents. Glad to see some excitement about hockey on the boards. But please lower your expectations on Rielly. Let’s not do this to ourselves again. There is a reason that I never learned the juniors names when they were hired by the agency. It might make me care and then overlook their failings or take to lenient a stance on their development.

Let Rielly develop in peace. Don’t get your hopes up until he dazzles in NHL training camp.
Until then. He’s a kid that should be left on his own, no media spotlight. Look how it screwed up Kadri.

Anyways knocking wood for good progress to getting this thing done.

The nice thing about the Rielly clip posted by BB this morning is that he did the same thing several times in one game. He skated the puck from one end to the other and made a safe play or created a chance. To bad he is not on a little bit better of a team we might see him do even better…

His partner Brown (at least I’m pretty sure he plays with him most) isn’t going anywhere but one of those thug leagues in Quebec.  I can probably skate better than him.  He’s tough and likes to take the body and bang with punches but to me he looked like a horrible skater who’s error prone and runs around a lot.  Stick Rielly with a skilled D-partner and some solid offensive finishers and the sky is the limit.  WJC will give us all a true look at his abilities.

I know. But we’ve been to this dance before. And it starts with the hype. then the comparisons, then come the trade rumours and finally some people on this board are convinced that we must package Rielly up in a deal to get Luongo. Should happen by 3 this aft if things run to form. Calm down people.

If the media screwed Kadri up then he ain’t cut out for the Leafs.  Pro athletes are always spotlighted, not just Kadri and many feed off it or shut it out.  Kadri has incredible skill set but it’s useless if he can’t keep his head screwed on straight.  That’s Naz’s fault not the media’s.  He has to find a way to stay headstrong and deal with the attention.  A skill just as important as toe drags here (or should I say there) in TO.

So have I and I try to temper my expectations because of past disappointment but I’ll tell you this . We are in a lockout and out team has been a freakin disaster . Not much to be excited about in the last yr or so. When a kid like Reilly comes along I’m gonna  put a smile on my face and look for any positive I can find thank you very much.

Mackinnon would literally turn our franchise around. He is exactly what we need.

I would blow our team up to get that first overall pick.

Going forward with Rielly and Mackinnon is enough for me hahaha.

In all seriousness though, I would contemplate moving Kessel for that pick.

I agree. But at the same time if we came out of this year with a playoff spot I wouldn’t be made.

Like I said earlier, a strong performance could lead to a signing like Getzlaf, which I think would likely be more beneficial for us.

The next year that attracts a Ryan Callahan or maybe the next year a Marc Staal
