Leafs Prospect Update: November 11

For most of the Leafs CHL prospects, this was a pretty lacklustre week.

Tyler Biggs picked up a pair of assists in Friday’s game but was held pointless in a pair of losses on Saturday and Sunday.  David Broll had a 3-point weekend with 2 goals and 1 assist.  Rielly plays an afternoon game tomorrow and after 1 assist in his last 3 games, he’ll have to put up some crooked numbers for his weekly production to be in any way noteworthy — though his play was, as always, solid.

While the group-wide production was uninspiring, there’s still plenty to talk about.  First of all, after being benched following what I’ve been told was a sub-par effort, both Joe Colborne and Nazem Kadri bounced back in a big way on Saturday night, putting up 5-points between them and from what I’ve heard, looking very good while doing it.  The highlights were nice, especially the nifty tic-tac-toe number that Colborne, Gardiner, and Kadri put together at the 1:19 mark of that video.   With my CHL commitments, I’ve only seen about half of the Marlies games so far this year but Kadri and Colborne have looked good when I’ve tuned in — I’m just lucky, I guess.

The story of the week as far as Leafs prospects goes was without a doubt Connor Brown.  I confessed last week to having not paid too much attention to him in the early stages of this season but I saw him this week and he looked good.  In 2 games, Brown put up 2 goals and 5 assist and all of his assists were of the primary variety.

The question that I’ve been asked most often this season is whether Brown is actually this good or whether he’s a product of another Connor; namely, Connor McDavid.  First of all, it’s impossible to take team or line effects out of Junior Hockey.  Who’s responsible for whose production?  It’s possibly the most maddening question to try and sort out.  Does it help Brown that he’s skating with the OHL’s super rookie? Of course.  But as good as McDavid will undoubtedly be, he’s still only the 15th leading scorer in the OHL as of tonight and that puts him 3 slots behind Brown, for now.

What I’ve seen from Brown in a small 3 game sampling is some good vision and creativity as well as a strong understanding of when it’s appropriate to shoot and when it’s better to pass.  His skating doesn’t really standout and he’s a bit undersized but he has a knack for finding and hitting the holes in the offensive zone coverage.

At the end of the day, despite his early production, I see Brown as a bit of a longshot.  He plays smart and he’s capable of making some high-skill plays but at his size and without exceptional speed, it’s going to be tough sledding for him to make The Show.  While he was full-marks for his points over the weekend (I’ll tweet the highlight pack or plays of the week once it comes out — one of his assists against Oshawa was magnificent), 11 of his 16 goals have come on the powerplay and things like that tend to even themselves out over the course of a season.

For now, I’m happy to see that he’s producing in his draft+1 year but my expectations are still tempered by his size and draft slot.  Not a lot of 6th rounders make it but for the time being, I’m just enjoying the ride.

if you go to the NCAA, after 4 years you are a FA. Guys like Wheeler, Schultz did that.

How is that a loophole? If a player chooses an education over playing Junior hockey they shouldn’t be discouraged. I would think most players that opt to go to the NCAA at 18 aren’t great prospects to begin with. If they develop to the point they are then I believe they deserve to be FA’s.

Toninato has said that he intends to go to Duluth next year. He also hinted that he may want to turn pro after 1 or 2 years of college. Should that be his choice the Leafs are in good shape as they will hold his rights until after his 3rd year. If he decides to pursue a pro career early, the Leafs will be his only choice, outside of a trade.

Djamon: I read your post. For me the fairest position would be for players that want to attend college, to be able to declare so, and thereby be excluded from the draft until such time as they graduate or declare eligibility. At that point they can be drafted and signed on the same basis as other draftees.

well if you draft a guy 5th overall, he goes to NCAA and then decides to go UFA, that sucks.

yeah if they want education over hockey, the kid can decided to skip the draft. I think that’s what Bozak did, he skip the draft and decided to go to college and then he became an UFA

If he gets drafted 5th overall there’s no way in hell he stays in college for 4 years.

I get that, but in all the cases you gave they went there for only one year (maybe 2) so their drafting team didn’t lose a thing.

If a player stays in college for a full 4 years it’s probably because they don’t have a pro career waiting for them.

Not really sure thats always the case but I do agree that Its not really a loophole. Because any Junior player can simply not sign a contract with the team that drafted them. LiKe Josh Nicholls did with the Leafs… He is now free to sign where he want… That’s if he is still sought after.

I’ve seen this stated recently, that Nicholls chose not to sign with the Leafs. I was under the impression that he was hoping for a contract and it was the Leafs who did not offer one.

I’ve seen it here on the site and am curious where this viewpoint comes from. Tim Horton’s comment below mine seems to indicate it was Nicholls choice while I’ve assumed he would have liked to sign with the team.

So it’s a loophole that needs closing because one player has stayed in college long enough to become a FA?

Watching the Marlies this year…Komarov has stood out. Obviously as a 25 year old coming from RSL he should be good. But he brings the intangibles the Leafs need. If the Leafs can find a way to add a significant physical force Komarov will be that much better…the way the Leafs are built now he will not be as effective because he is not big enough. I know Grabovski should play with scorers but if Komarov has a little snipe in his game…I could see him and Grabovski having some great chemistry. Grabs, Komarov and Kule could be a tough line to play against.
The Leafs do have scoring from other places like Lupul, Kessel, JVR, and maybe Mac, Kadri, or even a Dman or two. Even Bozak is not entirely out of the picture.

Looking forward to seeing the Marlies back home next weekend.

I’m working nights all weekend or I’d be going to Hamilton to watch the game on Friday night.

However, their home game against Hamilton on Saturday is on Sportsnet at 3PM and I plan on watching that before heading to work that night.

Also, they play at home to Abbottsford (I believe) on Sunday at 3PM and Rogers TV has that one covered. I’m with Bell, so I’ll have to wait until the replay is shown at 6PM on Leafs TV. Unless of course I decide to watch in online instead.
