Mats Sundin…*PING*…Hall of Fame
Congrats, Mats.

The lockout doesn’t matter today. For that matter, neither does a Marlies sweep of Texas, or another weekend full of strong performances by Leafs prospects.

I couldn’t care less about any of it today and that’s because the Leaf who is statistically the greatest of all time is entering the Hall of Fame today. First ballot, too, I might add.

Despite the confession from the man himself that he was a Habs fan growing up, I can’t be deterred from honouring his greatness. Also, who can blame him for not being a fan of the 80’s Leafs? That’s almost as bad as being a fan of the present Leafs.

My darkest secret may be that I wasn’t always a Sundin fan. In my teenage years, I rebelled against top six players and had a string of garbage Leafs who I loved including Benoit Hogue, Randy Wood and Mike Johnson, before coming around to the better choice of Steve Thomas.

I was a bit of an ass in the sense that I viewed 80-point seasons as Sundin’s job the way that being a marginal penalty killer was Randy Wood’s job. I didn’t allow myself to truly marvel at some of the numbers Sundin was putting up. In an effort in unfortunate timing, I didn’t come to the realization of how great Sundin was until after the lockout.

The number that most sticks out on Mats’ resume is the 79 game winning goals he scored for the Leafs. A number that is 28 more than Ron Ellis’ total, who is second in game winning goals in franchise history. In fact, Sundin’s 96 career game winning goals are good enough to be seventh in league history. He is only behind Phil Esposito, Jaromir Jagr, Brett Hull, Brendan Shanahan, Teemu Selanne and Guy Lafleur.

His “clutch” numbers in the playoffs become even more impressive: he scored the game winning goal in 9% of the playoff games he dressed in and 21% of his playoff goals were the deciding marker.

The best summation of his career may come in the form of this week’s Pierre LeBrun article:

“The longest-serving non-North American captain in NHL history; the first European to be taken No. 1 overall in the NHL draft; an incredible point-a-game career that featured 1,349 points (564 goals, 785 assists) in 1,346 regular-season NHL games; eight appearances in the All-Star Game; a three-time IIHF world champion; and of course, an Olympic gold-medal winner — yes, the Hall’s selection committee had plenty else to look at in making its decision.”

If you haven’t read the full article yet, I’d encourage you to do so, as well as revisit the MLHS posts from Sundin’s number retirement last season and of course Michael Langlois’ article on Sundin in this year’s Lindy Maple Leafs Annual.

In the spirit of a weekend about Remembrance, rather than focusing on the horrid state of the Leafs and the NHL, think about those happier times when Sundin was captaining the ship.

The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is on TSN2 at 730ET.

The fact that no one bothered to televise the Legends Game and this ceremony upsets me.

Considering he’s already cost these players the Hall of Fame Game it would probably be nice if he let them have an enjoyable induction day.

It’s pathetic the Leafs have gone 7 years without a #1 franchise all-star Centerman. No Keon, no Sittler, no Vaive, no Gilmour, and no Sundin.  This is unacceptable for the TorontoMaple Leaf organization and it’s fans!!
To Burke I say: you better trade for one soon or draft one soon because I’m getting fed up waiting. Preferably I’d like you Mr. Burke to trade for one and draft another so the Leafs can have 2 worthy centers just for giggles.
      C’mon Burke. Getit done!!

No offense intended my friend but I just don’t think Burke cares if you’re fed up waiting lol. He doesn’t care what I think or anybody else thinks either.

Good morning, just pointing out Grabo is pretty good center Last year he had two plays in the Highlights of the year. He is not Mats or Dougie, but he has heart and can play. I think he continue’s to get better and become a 70 point two way Center.

I think he could hit 70pts for a year, maybe two, but a 50-60pt 2nd line centre is truly what he is. Nothing wrong with that.

I think it depends on his wingers, when last year they combined for 27 goals. I truly believe grabo is 25 to 30 goals a year. Picking up 40 assists from 27 goals is a tough trick, Not getting 1st PP time is also holding him Back for points. I would love to see JVR and him Click.

Morning Gents. Looks like the lockout is going to be resolved or go a year. My bet is go a year. No hockey this season. To bad. I’m actually doubting there will be an NHL to come back to. My prediction that the Union decertifies and takes down the NHL with it gets more likely every day.

I think there could be a fit between those two also and expect a little more from Mac this year. I’m hoping he becomes a consistent 50-55pt player. 25g, 25-30a.
Question is will Grabs ever get 1st unit PP minutes? Not if we find a legit #1C to pair with Kessel and Lupul. His wingers will be fine though IMO. Between JVR, Kulie, Mac, Kadri and Frattin we should be able to find him 2 good wingers.

That sounds likely.  I firmly believe it is Don Fehr that is preventing things to move forward.  We just have to look at his track record.  This would have been done already and now we are looking at a season long lockout at the minimum.

Morning MC, I am starting to think that Fehr has no interest in a Deal, he is more interested in Proving a point for past treatment of players

Yep agreed Bro he will likely never get a chance as a 1C with wingers like Kessel and Lups, but, he is one hell of a 2C lol

The thing that makes me believe that Sundin is one of the best ever is the way he used to hang onto the puck. Sundin just simply controlled the game and would have players holding on hanging off of him and slashing him with no calls, of course that was normal in that day and age but today Sundin would be an absolute force and impossible to take off the puck.
I don’t know if I would call him the best leaf ever but IMO he is right up there, he is definitely the best leaf of my era.

definitely is, we couldn’t ask for better. If we can get a top centre in this draft we will have a solid 1-2 punch up the middle IMO

I remember one guy (pretty sure it was Chara, if not it was one of the top D at the time and a real big guy) getting frustrated trying to take the puck from him while Mats was skating around the back of the net and corners protecting the puck. Ended up grabbing Mats around the neck and pulling him down taking a penalty. I always knew he was good at it but that made me realize how good, he made the best defenders in the league look foolish.

Can’t see BB trading his true offensive centreman unless he’s getting back a Malkin type player in return, of course we would have to add more, but I think Grabs is the perfect #2 centreman for this team.
