The now-surging Marlies finish up their eight-game road trip tonight in Hamilton before returning for the back half of the home and home against the Bulldogs tomorrow at the Ricoh (tickets). The Marlies finish up the weekend by hosting Abbotsford on Sunday (tickets).

The big news in Marlie land today is that of Matt Frattin‘s return to the lineup after an off-season of rehab following knee surgery. Don’t expect immediate dividends, but Frattin made a mockery of AHL goaltenders in the Marlies Calder Cup run to the tune of 10 goals, his tenth being the play that ended his 2011-12 season. It’s a welcomed addition and a rare case of a player benefiting from this lockout situation – he’ll have time to get his game back in shape before someone else can take his spot on the Leafs.

It’s also a welcomed addition in the sense that the Marlies may soon lose their top goal scoring forward. Leo Komarov, scorer of four goals in his last three games, remains with the organization for now as the Leafs look into whether or not he can both head back to the KHL and return to Toronto to play in the NHL should the lockout end. If it checks out, Komarov will head back to Moscow Dynamo, where he’s played the last three seasons. It’s a loss for the Marlies, but from an individual development standpoint Komarov has proved his point in his brief stint in the AHL to start the season and is probably better off playing against KHL competition for now.

Ben Scrivens goes in net tonight, with Mark Owuya likely to take reigns tomorrow as Rynnas is banged up from practice.

I’m assuming that part of the salary wouldn’t couut toward the cap . If it does its doesn’t help as much

    @ Top Cheese:
I guess the question will be, is he going to be 3rd line, 4th line or a mix throughout the year because of necessity. We know he will be one of the top PK players. I don’t know enough specifically about McClement but I would guess that his minus number would have to do with who he faces on line match-ups. If he’s out there every night facing the best offensive players on other teams, then it seems reasonable to expect a minus over the season. -8 for Colorado doesn’t seem that bad in this context. And he may be starting more of his shifts in the defensive zone.

lol well i knew this was going to come up, comparing the 2 is just dumb, show me the NHL Onwer that is anything close to Jeffrey Loria plus the fact there is no Hard cap

Don’t take me serious. I was just poking a bit of fun at Burkie . I know he’s constrained by the system he has to work under.

The Schenn-JVR trade was a fairly big one, yes, but it doesn’t necessarily improve the team. Both guys have potential to be better than they are right now, and they’re both going to be good players in the long run. JVR a top 6 winger, Schenn a top 4 dman. We didn’t need much help at the wing position yet, though. And now our D looks even worse than it already did.

Depends on whether you think JVR is an upgrade over most of the wingers we have up front. I believe he is . We will see how the D makes out without Schenn. I think a lot  will depend on the systems Carlyle uses this season.

I guess this is one of those personal feeling things without facts or numbers to back it up, but I don’t think we’ll miss Schenn’s contribution at all. But JVR could become an important part of this team in the next couple of years.

the defense will be just fine i think, by the end of it Schenn wasnt even playing top 4 minutes. We potentially traded for an elite power forward who has the size and skill to be very effective.

Its even more than that though. Loria just guaranteed himself a profit for next year with TV revenue if he doesn’t get a single fan to see a game. No cap floor is just as important as no cap ceiling. Also money changed hands which isn’t allowed in the NHL. The situations are so different its just incredible. Also who are the agents that accepted a verbal no trade promise from Loria? Time for the players to fire them I would say.

I don’t know a whole lot about baseball Rusty but it would seem to me that CBA they have is not the wonderful thing everyone says it is.

It’s crazy how people can continually completely disregard context.  Eric Staal is a -33 and he plays against defensive units, and yet I doubt anyone would bother to try and analyze his game based on that one stat.

So it seems Fehr argument doesn’t hold as much water.  The next CBA in MLB probably will have a cap?

And I don’t think that Carlyle has any use for defensemen like Schenn anymore.  Beauchemin is the lone exception as far as guys that have had a more defensive skill set and excelled under Carlyle.  And even then, Beauchemin was a veteran at that point, in his prime, a complete two way player, and next to either Pronger or Niedermayer.

But I think, all world talents aside, that RC would prefer a Visnovsky skill set over a Schenn skill set.  And not surprisingly, we have started to build our defense that way with Rielly, Gardiner, Percy, Liles, and Phaneuf – all guys that are fluid skaters with offensive instincts.  The goal under RC is going to be to play in the other zone.  With that in mind, it makes more sense to have JVR as he will probably immediately be our best forward at keeping the puck in that zone.

Good points Cam and you can see those very things with the way the Marlies are playing this  yr. Much more mobile d and they are playing a puck possession game way more then they did last yr, at least it seems that way to me . I’ve been impressed with how the Colborne line has been cycling the puck in the last few games.

Yep.  Pretty clear that on the back end Burke is looking more at a Detroit model than a Boston model.  This seems smart to me for a lot of reasons.  First because playing that really rough, physical game is hard to sustain.  Boston will lose that identity within a few years as Chara declines, where as Detroit had a run of 2 decades.  You’re also just less likely to get injured playing in the offensive zone.

Yep . Hopefully we see some stricter rules enforcement as well . Things were being called early last season but then Shanny and the refs all backed off in the second half . Pressure from GM’s no doubt. Now all we need if for this fuckin lockout to be over

For sure. I don’t disregard +/- like some people, but you definitely have to take the circumstances into account. Some people take the numbers of a player who gets 13-14 minutes ice time, extrapolate and say, “this is what he would be like if he played 19-20 minutes”. Doesn’t work though without considering who he plays with, who he plays against and what zone he probably spends more time in. And there are very different roles and expectations assigned to players with those numbers of minutes.

I know very little about the economics of baseball other than they have significant tv, cable (and internet?) revenue. Why do you think baseball should have a floor?
