The now-surging Marlies finish up their eight-game road trip tonight in Hamilton before returning for the back half of the home and home against the Bulldogs tomorrow at the Ricoh (tickets). The Marlies finish up the weekend by hosting Abbotsford on Sunday (tickets).

The big news in Marlie land today is that of Matt Frattin‘s return to the lineup after an off-season of rehab following knee surgery. Don’t expect immediate dividends, but Frattin made a mockery of AHL goaltenders in the Marlies Calder Cup run to the tune of 10 goals, his tenth being the play that ended his 2011-12 season. It’s a welcomed addition and a rare case of a player benefiting from this lockout situation – he’ll have time to get his game back in shape before someone else can take his spot on the Leafs.

It’s also a welcomed addition in the sense that the Marlies may soon lose their top goal scoring forward. Leo Komarov, scorer of four goals in his last three games, remains with the organization for now as the Leafs look into whether or not he can both head back to the KHL and return to Toronto to play in the NHL should the lockout end. If it checks out, Komarov will head back to Moscow Dynamo, where he’s played the last three seasons. It’s a loss for the Marlies, but from an individual development standpoint Komarov has proved his point in his brief stint in the AHL to start the season and is probably better off playing against KHL competition for now.

Ben Scrivens goes in net tonight, with Mark Owuya likely to take reigns tomorrow as Rynnas is banged up from practice.

Neither do I Bob. Just read a few articles in last couple of days on this Marlins trade and some seem to feel the lack of a floor is what’s causing some of these owners to just slash their roster and make huge profits from the revenue sharing . Hardly fair to the fans of those teams

A friend of mine is a huge baseball fan, and he sent me this article about the whole debacle.  I didn’t read the whole thing, but some of you might find it interesting.  From what I understand, it’s essentially criminal what’s going on with some of that stuff, but like I said, you’d have to sort your way through the article to confirm:

Well, we won’t notice the D suffer much from the loss of Schenn this season, because he struggled last year anyways. It’s the long-term loss of Schenn that hurts. His 10/11 season was awesome, and it won’t be his best at the NHL level. He was 21 that year, and defensive dmen don’t peak until the 28-32 range. He was the perfect long-term partner for any of Liles, Gardiner or Rielly.
As far as JVR is concerned, he probably won’t ever be as good as Kessel, and he definitely won’t be better than Lupul in the short-run, if Lupul plays anywhere near the level he played last season. JVR is an upgrade over Mac in the long-run, but not necessarily in the short run. He hasn’t proven he is as good as Mac yet. Cold he this season? Yeah, it’s possible, but not a certainty, by any means. JVR in the #4 wing spot is still an upgrade over Kuli/Kadri/Frattin at this point, though.
The trade was just a swap of two young players with potential. They’ll both have good careers, but this team has more problems defensively than offensively, so it is at least a questionable move.

In the short run, we may not miss Schenn, because of how bad he was last season. But in the long run, it will suck not having that top 4 physical shut-down guy to partner with Gardiner or Rielly.
JVR will be an important part of this team in the long run. Schenn would also have, though.

The other thing though, and the one argument I always had a hard time refuting when Schenn-bashers would go to town, is that at some point down the road it will be easier to sign someone to fill that role than it would be to sign a huge top six power forward winger.  Like you said, these guys typically don’t hit their prime until much later, which is why you see a lot of the better teams in the league look to pluck guys like Schenn when they’re around 26, rather than sitting through 10 years of development.

Matt Greene springs to mind.  Look at LA’s defense:
    -
    Doughty – drafted 2nd overall
    Scuderi – UFA acquisition
    Mitchell – UFA acquisition
    Greene – trade acquisition
    -
At some point, Burke will make another Beauchemin like signing, except it will actually work out.

It’s reasonable to say it’s not fair to the fans. On the other hand the idea of loading up to take a run for a few years seems to hold merit too, rather than be continually mediocre. Unfortunately, Loria’s about face in this regard has to be a big disappointment to Miami fans who thought their team was going all in for the next few years.

BTW: Here’s a pretty good version of this Buddy Guy tune I came across recently.

I was just thinking about that. In a way I wish Schenn well for what he did as a Leafs player but he’s a Flyer now and a good part of me hopes he turns out to be no more than an average d-man. I think he’ll be replaceable.

It might be just a case of the owners past history that got everyone pissed off . This is the 3rd time he’s done this I believe . Selig has to be pissed from the perspective of all the money taxpayers put into the stadium also . Likely it will make his job a lot more difficult the next time some team goes looking for tax dollars to help build .

    Thanks for the tune :)

I like Schenn, so it’s hard for me to not want him to do well, but I really hope he at least doesn’t do well against the Leafs, lol.

Of course Loria loaded up last year when a vote for a new stadium was being held and magically once it past he has unloaded all his high priced talent. Must be a co-incidence. :) kinda funny that even with the cash they dropped they had a 69 win season.

Yup can’t see Selig vetoing the trade considering the Florida boys are his co-conspirators. Maybe AA knows where some bodies are buried in the whole Expos fiasco.

Nope I don’t see any way he will veto the trade. Florida does get some damn good prospects. They did better than LA did in August trade with Red Sox.

I’d love to see him tonight but it does make sense not to play him back to back so early in his return.  No doubt playing a physical game is different than simply practicing.
