The now-surging Marlies finish up their eight-game road trip tonight in Hamilton before returning for the back half of the home and home against the Bulldogs tomorrow at the Ricoh (tickets). The Marlies finish up the weekend by hosting Abbotsford on Sunday (tickets).

The big news in Marlie land today is that of Matt Frattin‘s return to the lineup after an off-season of rehab following knee surgery. Don’t expect immediate dividends, but Frattin made a mockery of AHL goaltenders in the Marlies Calder Cup run to the tune of 10 goals, his tenth being the play that ended his 2011-12 season. It’s a welcomed addition and a rare case of a player benefiting from this lockout situation – he’ll have time to get his game back in shape before someone else can take his spot on the Leafs.

It’s also a welcomed addition in the sense that the Marlies may soon lose their top goal scoring forward. Leo Komarov, scorer of four goals in his last three games, remains with the organization for now as the Leafs look into whether or not he can both head back to the KHL and return to Toronto to play in the NHL should the lockout end. If it checks out, Komarov will head back to Moscow Dynamo, where he’s played the last three seasons. It’s a loss for the Marlies, but from an individual development standpoint Komarov has proved his point in his brief stint in the AHL to start the season and is probably better off playing against KHL competition for now.

Ben Scrivens goes in net tonight, with Mark Owuya likely to take reigns tomorrow as Rynnas is banged up from practice.

I saw the big crowd of Leafs fans up in the corner and you looked to be having fun. My wife and I try to see a game every year and on that trip went to Nashville and then saw the Capitals game on the way home to Halifax. Nashville was amazing, great city. Not to hurt any feelings but Toronto is where I least like to see the Leafs play. The city is so gray and the people seem so beaten. Now to be clear I have family there and my cousin is a metro copper and I love the Leafs beyond words but the city is not what I wish it was and people who live there pretend it is.

If I haven’t pissed you off too much here is a funny story. On the way to Nashville I walked to the bagage area with several Leafs: Lupul, Kessel, Connolly and Phaneuf. I was chatting with Phaneuf and put my bag where he did and just kept walking along. I was wearing a Leafs t shirt and the attendent put her hand on my back while saying “you’re with the Leafs” leading me towards the hall for their plane. I told her I wanted to say yes so bad but I guess I’m not suppose to be here….she said no your not and sent me back to my right area. Once in Nashville I was chatting with the Leafs broadcast team because they recognized me from the airport. They said they never saw any one get that close to boarding the plane.
I have to say the Phaneuf in particular was a really good guy….no Sundin but I predict he will grow into being a very good captain and a significant Leaf for a very long time.

    Go Leafs Go!

i would hope so not a fan of turf and i don’t think that most of the players are either, last year the jays were after Carlos Beltran but he didn’t come and gave one reason as being the turf

Sure its possible especially with a retracting dome. Question is the cost I suppose they get the hydro boys from BC to help them with grow lighting.

    Cody Nickolet ‏@WHLFromAbove
As per @TPSDean, Everett captain Ryan Murray has a separated shoulder and no timetable for a return is known at this time.

Cody Nickolet ‏@WHLFromAboveDepending on the severity of the separation, I would imagine Murray’s injury won’t keep him out of World Juniors. Over a month to recover.

Is the Rachel Phelps character modeled after Loria or did he steal his business plan form Major League? I am guessing he stole the business plan since he didn’t purchase a share of the Expos til Major League was released.

Interesting article right here about the Lockout . I could easily see Snyder wanting this thing over because of Comcast and I could see him not wanting changes to the contract systems too considering how he operates

No surprise at all since the Flyers were the biggest culprits in cap circumventing deals or at least sleazy ones. :)

so I found this on Wikipedia about Marlins (of all teams) new retractable roof stadium and the use of real grass

Since first laying down sod in early February 2012, the grass has had difficulty growing under the frequently-closed roof. Planners had selected a strain of Bermuda grass—named Celebration—for its reputation of doing well in the shade.[50] Even so, with the grass receiving only about 4 hours per day of sunlight, some of the sod keeps turning brown. The worst-affected area is in deep right field where patches of dead sod have been replaced multiple times. Groundskeepers are attempting to point grow lights on the area to nurse it to health on non-game days.[51]
During the first months of games played at the new park, at least 4 or 5 leaks showed themselves in the retractable roof. Fans sitting in at least 4 seating sections still got wet under the drippy roof on rainy days. Leaks have progressively appeared under different spots as stadium workers kept plugging them by opening up the roof panels and patching the joints.
Samson said it will take time to work out the kinks: “We knew going in that other retractable-roof ballparks had to make adjustments for one or two years to get their field right. We hoped that we’d get it right the first time. So far it’s not right. We’re going to keep working and find a way to make it better.”
