The now-surging Marlies finish up their eight-game road trip tonight in Hamilton before returning for the back half of the home and home against the Bulldogs tomorrow at the Ricoh (tickets). The Marlies finish up the weekend by hosting Abbotsford on Sunday (tickets).

The big news in Marlie land today is that of Matt Frattin‘s return to the lineup after an off-season of rehab following knee surgery. Don’t expect immediate dividends, but Frattin made a mockery of AHL goaltenders in the Marlies Calder Cup run to the tune of 10 goals, his tenth being the play that ended his 2011-12 season. It’s a welcomed addition and a rare case of a player benefiting from this lockout situation – he’ll have time to get his game back in shape before someone else can take his spot on the Leafs.

It’s also a welcomed addition in the sense that the Marlies may soon lose their top goal scoring forward. Leo Komarov, scorer of four goals in his last three games, remains with the organization for now as the Leafs look into whether or not he can both head back to the KHL and return to Toronto to play in the NHL should the lockout end. If it checks out, Komarov will head back to Moscow Dynamo, where he’s played the last three seasons. It’s a loss for the Marlies, but from an individual development standpoint Komarov has proved his point in his brief stint in the AHL to start the season and is probably better off playing against KHL competition for now.

Ben Scrivens goes in net tonight, with Mark Owuya likely to take reigns tomorrow as Rynnas is banged up from practice.

Not entirely singling out MMA although it may seem like I did . I’m not a fan of staged fights in hockey or even boxing for that matter. I don’t mind when guys get pissed with each other in the heat of a game and drop the gloves but fighting just for the sake of it never made sense to me .

It works to an extent but how many of these players aren’t reporting their headaches after the games. Really it’s not at the NHL where it’s most important, it’s making sure the kids growing up are aware of the dangers of not reporting the symptoms from a hit.

Fair enough *-* I am indifferent to Stage Fighting in Hockey. I would prefer to watch Reilly doing that double toe drag, all things being equal.

Its a start though bro, its not easy to change a Culture. It Won’t happen overnight. And we just have to be more vigilant as adults, you take a big hit, your shut down period, until proper evaluation. The Kid can say what he of she wants but its up to the Coach ( Adult) to put the Kids needs over winning the game

I hope this bullshit lockout is solved very soon . I want to see how the Kid stacks up against NHL players. It will give us a much better idea how far along he is . Should he happen to make the Leafs out of camp I’m betting Burke will let him go to the WJC anyway

I know when I was growing up you were a “pussy” if you sat out. I don’t have kids yet but I find it hard to believe that the philosophy has changed. I guess in the end it’s not gonna be perfect but the leagues just have to do what they can to ensure the kids are aware of the side effects.
Personally when I was playing I thought I was tough playing after getting knocked out but now I realise it was just stupid but like I said it was the mentality most in the hockey community went by.

I agree it is a price that we pay….and yes, they are making huge strides in the awareness of concussions, and treatment of same.  I am of the opinion that the best (and only) treatment for concussions is to totally avoid them in the first place.   They are cumulative in effects, and regardless of treatment, the effects of receiving them are not reversible.  The biggest issue as I see it is once you suffer one, the subsequent ones happen much easier, and are far more damaging.

Nice post, and that is exactly it.  No one wants to show weakness, and it was considered normal to play shortly after getting concussed because there was no visible sign of injury, so you had to suck it up…or be called a wuss.

I think he will send him back to junior after 9 games, if he makes the team.  I could see him having an all over the place year.  Burke would then be hoping that Moose Jaw doesn’t make the playoffs, or gets knocked out early, so he can go join the Marlies for (hopefully) another long playoff run.
