A dash of cautious optimism

Long since dead and buried is any hockey fan holding their breath after every sign of optimism throughout the last 12 weeks of off-and-on negotiations. Cautious optimism isn’t a new development, but it’s up to you to determine if it has a different feel to it this time around. One of the Fehrs and Bill Daly standing side by side talking progress certainly is a first.

What Daly and Fehr said yesterday wasn’t anything particularly groundbreaking, but there they were standing beside each other sharing in one another’s semi-optimism. Daly thanked the sizeable group of negotiating players for putting in a hard day of productive negotiations, and Steve Fehr went as far as to say it might possibly have been their best day of them yet. At least, “in some ways.”

Anyways, the two sides do appear to be buckling down with this new approach to solving what seems to be a resolvable gap (in terms of the make-whole sticking point) with around 55 games left on the uncanceled portion of the schedule.

From Craig Custance:

Armed with the revenue and expense data that only the league and its teams have, economists say the league can project almost to the date when it becomes less beneficial to hold out for a better CBA and more beneficial to start playing hockey.

We may have finally reached that point. Hope, I think there’s reason to, but I’ll leave anything beyond that to Steve Burton.

Wednesday morning Leafs links..

Four Leafs on World Junior Preliminary Rosters
Tyler Biggs (USA), Garret Sparks (USA), Tom Nilsson (Sweden) and Morgan Rielly. Team USA has three goalies on the prelim roster and has to cut four bodies, so hopefully Sparks sticks.

The Colborne Conundrum
Gus Katsaros takes a really good in-depth look at the struggling Joe Colborne. Kats finishes off by asking: “Is it Joe Colborne the skilled player Burke and co envisioned? Or is it David Steckel adapting to a bottom six role.”

Even minus Murray, Canada’s defence looks powerful
A look at the strong Team Canada blueline that includes Morgan Rielly. The article include speculation of Rielly joining Dougie Hamilton in the top pairing. Because Leafs fans couldn’t just enjoy having one of the best D prospects in the game without hearing, “could’ve had Hamilton, too!”

And they’ll knife him if it helps the league. He’s done his job. And the league could use a sign that this doesn’t have a possibility of repeating in 5-7 years,

If Daly is seen as the guy that got this done then elevating him to commish would be a good thing and very welcome by the fans.

I don’t think he gets to vote on his replacement. So it would be a majority vote. And I think that the owners can see the need for him to be gone. If they don’t they are going to read a ton of press about the ouster of Bettman and Fehr. Fehr most likely will just retire.

The Leafs are not too good for a lotto pick. The Leafs finished 26th last season. And moving Schenn for JVR + signing McClement isn’t enough to make a noticeable difference in the standings. We definitely have a shot at a lotto pick again. The goaltending still sucks, and the D is even worse. The forwards are better, but goal-scoring wasn’t a problem.

I think the Leafs were definitely a much better team than the standings showed.  We were extremely fortunate to draft as high as we did, in my opinion.  We should have been drafting around the 10-14 spot.  And the forwards aren’t better because they should be able to score more.  They are better because we should be able to maintain possession in the offensive zone better.

Yea, once our weird end of year tank reached a point where playoffs were pretty much done it was a blessing that we continued to suck to get that better draft pick. up until those last 20 games though we were very much in the race

Nothing to be read into that. The two sides just didn’t want to be rushed with BOG meeting at 11.

Well, we threw in the towel.  I think that if we had stuck with Wilson, he probably would have eventually put things back on the rails and probably churned out one last  win streak that would have sent us up to the 8-10 area in the draft order.

How is the team better than the standings showed? The only reason the Leafs stuck in a playoff spot for so long was because they were really good in October, and good in January. Every other month of the season, they were bad. It’s not like they were a good team until February. They were a bad team that had a great month to start the season, and then gradually moved down the standings until the end of the season, with a slight bump upwards in January.

hahha, And we are Back atter eh. We just disagree. Like Jcg said one more win a month and we are looking a lot differently in the standings.

-On Mclement just because he contributions may not be noticeable, but its the little things that can win a 3-2 game instead of losing 3-2.
-Our young players will be better and Hungrier, having gone through trying times. These build strengh and Character, they already have the talent.
-This year should see a better commitment to Defense from the Coach on down, Guys like Gunner and Gardiner, will blossom from a more balanced system.
-Lets not forget about Koromov and the effect he can bring to a team replacing a Lombardi on a Line. Or a Full season of Frattin instead of Connolly.
-More little things like Face off win’s. Having steckel MCL and a improved Bozie will help special teams and lead to better puck possesion.
-A healthy productive, Liles will also Help

There are a lot of little differences this year, that will add up to great things

Well, you’re exaggerating those bad months to make a point, and that’s fine, but they were a good team until February.  Had some struggles with the PK in December, but ups and downs are normal.  No team is consistent all year.  LA by comparison also only had 2 really good months, and the rest were below average.
    -
That said, I don’t wholly disagree with you.  The Leafs could easily finish in the lottery if we go through the season with a concussed goalie again, or face a severe rash of injuries. Barring those two things though, this is not a 26th place team.

But thats not what we are talking about Cam, Luck always plays a factor. But if you look at the team that we will field this year, 25 teams are not better than us no F’n way.

We definitely have enough weapons to be a winning team.  As we are right now though, RC needs to recognize that our best bet is as a special teams team.  We need to draw a lot of penalties (Komarov and Kadri should help), and radically improve our PK.  Everyone wants to jump to the conclusion where we’re a team full of Clarksons and Clowes and Biggs and so forth, but we need to go one step at a time.
    -
Still, everything comes back to Reimer, ultimately.  If no Luongo, than Reims will probably decide the difference between lotto pick and first round of playoffs.

We haven’t gotten rid of Connolly and Lombardi yet. They are still Leafs, and until they are gone, Kadri and Frattin likely have to stay in the AHL, only being called-up when injuries arise. We’ll have to wait and see if Komarov wins a spot.

IF Liles is healthy, his return will likely be negated by someone else getting hurt. Injuries aren’t really a valid excuse for poor play. Every team will have injuries every year. It’s part of the game.

If Carlyle has the team committing more to defence and balanced play, we probably end up losing offence in the process. The team is designed to fit Wilson’s system, anyways.
