The Curious Case of Paul Ranger
Fish stink, hockey doesn't!

Watching the Marlies this year partially feels like watching a clock turning its hands back. It was on the first day of training camp that a brand new name appeared on the roster. While roster changes aren’t exactly an AHL novelty, seeing Paul Ranger’s name on a hockey jersey makes one take a quick peek towards the calendar.

If you did turn back the hands of time, Ranger would be a 25-year-old defenseman playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning. With a promising career ahead of him, he suddenly left the game many of us would pay to play. Personal reasons or a different motive entirely, it wasn’t quite clear why he left hockey only to find him himself coaching his hometown’s bantam team in Whitby, Ontario.

On August 21, 2012, after almost three seasons removed from competitive hockey, this left handed shooting defenseman signed a minor league deal with the Marlies. And, it was during a recent Marlies game against the Abbotsford Heat that I once again noticed Paul Ranger, a player like many others this year, clearly playing in a league below his caliber.

I have no doubt that Ranger, now aged 28, is still an NHL player. You see it when he’s rushing the puck, showing good puck skills or making that great breakout pass. At 6ft 3in tall, he’s also very strong guy with a big reach, who’s quite a handful in the corners. Adept at offense and very skilled defensively, Paul Ranger is probably the most complete defenseman on the Marlies roster this season.

Coach Dallas Eakins had a glowing review of his game:

“He just keeps getting better and better.  It’s a great story for me. A guy who was off that long, to come back in day one of training camp and set the tone with his fitness level, to pick up his game this fast … it shows not only his hockey ability, but his mental fortitude.”

It most certainly is a great story, both for Ranger and the Marlies. The Maple Leafs affiliate benefited from adding free talent to the roster and the Leafs might still reap those rewards. Thanks to some fantastic work by Claude Loiselle, who first contacted Ranger’s agent to inquire about his client’s wishes to play hockey once again, we’re seeing a resurrection of what was once an up and coming talent. At 28, progressing like he has, it’s still not too late for him to hit the big time.

In a way, feel good stories like Paul’s keep us engaged because deep down we all want to believe it’s never too late to change ours minds, to restore polish to parts of our lives we neglected along the way. Every game is a tryout, and much like being touched by a master restorer, Paul Ranger is once again showing polish worthy of the best league in the world.

I dont care if you understand.  Its a personal opinion.  You are correct when saying the one-dimensional goon defenders are gone.

But that doesnt mean we cant have sandpaper as some fiesty fuck face is jabbing away at Luongo after the whistle (see what I did there?)

It’s just instinct.  It’s easy to say “I need to do this”, but when you’re actually out there, you’re usually just reacting.  I never played the game at a very high level, but I know I could never just change my instincts, even if it was in my own best interest.

And what happens when guys do what you want?  They get sent to the box for retaliating, and the other guys keep doing it anyways.  The league rewards antagonists, so the way I see it, you want to add that element to your game in the forward ranks if you’re going to have it.

If Disclaimer of Interest isn’t merely a negotiating ploy, then why is it even being suggested by the executive of the NHLPA?

If I were a judge I could see granting it only on the basis of some sort of non-association order that Fehr could have no further contact with the Union.  Either you’re disinterested or stay the fuck away from those that are interested.

It is certainly true that our D does not need a Mike Komisarek type. And as you put it “a clear the front of the net guy” is not what I’m talking about either although it would be good to play better in front of our net. But hockey is a physical game and you need to have necessary size and toughness to win when it matters. If you can’t see that then there is nothing I can say here to convince you otherwise. The last few cup winners and contenders did so with talent and physicality. LA, Boston, Chicago (when they won) have all been very physical teams with key players like Brown, Chara, Lucic, Byflugen etc playing a huge role. The Leafs have major short comings in the physical aspect of the game. If they don’t address it somewhere we will see more games like when we played Boston last year.
I am guessing you are young and maybe haven’t watched hockey for very long…I can assure you that it is very rare for a team to win the cup if they are not one of the toughest teams in the league.

I think we need some balance on the back-end. Not all puck-movers, not all stay-at-home guys, but a mix of both. The Kings had a good mix. Doughty, Voynov and Martinez for puck-movers and Greene, Mitchell and Scuderi for tough stay-at-home guys.

We definitely need more physicality somewhere in the mix. LA has about six guys in there forwards alone as big or bigger than Biggs.

Detroit has won it more than anyone over the last 20 years with little if any toughness.  Pittsburgh won with skill….and Orpik.  Chicago won with skill.  Toughness did matter in one series, but they really only had 1 significant player who played that way (and an effective 4th line of goons) – so in my mind, it is a gross exaggeration to attribute Chi-Town’s revival with toughness.  I don’t know who really had it on NJ this year outside of Clarkson and Salvador.  It’s certainly not like they had a ton of toughness.  It’s not hard to imagine Burke adding 1 or 2 guys over the next couple years – you don’t need 12 of them.  In fact, NJ even admitted to trying to avoid toughness altogether and turn their backs on ‘tough’ players as to draw penalties.  And like I said, LA had toughness in the forward group, but not really on the back end.

This whole thing is just being blown right out of proportion because of the success Boston had, and the subsequent trouncing they gave us last year.

Mitchell and Scuderi are not tough.  They are very much guys who play the same way Gunnarsson does – using positioning and just being reliable.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to add a tough defender, and more toughness to the forwards.  I’m not saying we need all skill and all finesse.  I just think the fan base has become completely obsessed with toughness, and may be making some unrealistic demands based on that obsession.

I’d say it’s more accurate to say many of us obsessed about the lack of toughness and that is a very big difference.
