Welcome back, Josh Leivo.

After missing time with a concussion, Leivo returned to the Sudbury Wolves lineup last week and he did so with a vengeance.  The Wolves had 3 games in 3 nights this weekend and Leivo put up 2 goals and 5 assists.  Leivo now has 34 points in 29 games on a pretty weak Sudbury team.

Leivo is cut from the powerforward cloth and unlike the Leafs‘ other powerforward prospect, Tyler Biggs, Leivo will play with the puck on his stick.  My opinion on Leivo would be that his ceiling is higher than Biggs’ but that he’s also not as safe of a prospect.  Leivo does more on Sudbury than Biggs does in Oshawa largely because he has to, but Biggs does the little things better than Leivo at this stage.  It will be fun to continue comparing these two as their careers are both likely move in tandem to the professional ranks to start next season.

Matt Finn, also recently back from some time out of the lineup, put up a pair of powerplay goals in two games this weekend. I’ve often raved about Finn’s play on the man-advantage and I love being vindicated so allow me this sentence-long self-congratulation.  Finn now has an impressive 11 goals in 28 games from the point in his draft+1 season.  Lots to get excited about with this youngster.

From vindication to contradiction, Connor Brown continues throwing points on the board in handfuls.  Brown is now 12th in OHL scoring in his draft+1 season and has more points than any of the Leafs other CHL skaters.  Brown’s 43 points in 35 games are certainly something to get excited about (he added 5 points in 3 games this weekend).  I’m stubbornly standing by my assessment that Brown is most likely a Junior Star more than an actual noteworthy prospect but if he’s meaningfully over a point-per-game by year’s end then he may just have me eating my words.

Morgan Rielly, Tyler Biggs, and Garret Sparks have all left their Junior teams to prepare for the World Juniors.  The tournament should be especially fun this year with all the baby Leafs involved — get your PVRs ready!

Our window is stocked for now, and the future, thats the beauty here. Our prospect depth is better than the rest of the divisions still, and our lineup is the best in the division (on paper). No lockout to eff that up this time =).

I think we have about a 50% chance of signing Ryan Getzlaf.  I’ll just say it.  I said 20% chance of signing Richards, but I think Getzlaf is going to be a Leaf or a Duck, with some slight room for error incase he chooses something obscure.  Carlyle made him a captain there, he won a Cup with Burke, and now the CBA has eliminated the edge most other GMs might have had.

    Leivo’s draft+1 and draft+2 numbers don’t mean much. He’s still a long-shot to be a regular NHLer, but he’s pretty good for a late 3rd-round pick.

Yeahh…Steady improvement doesn’t mean much. So right 0.o. Just because it’ll take time, doesn’t mean he’s a long shot. His skill set is very much NHL capable, and his assets are a huge necessity for our club. Long shot he is not.

I take it you were being sarcastic. A ton of mediocre prospects light up the CHL in their draft+1 and draft+2 years. That’s just the way it is. Age makes a HUGE difference in junior leagues.

The NHL  could contract in a NY minute (whatever that is ) if it chose too and the players would have little too say about it. The Phoenix debacle is proof of that. That is one the sorriest episodes in sports business  history and it has cheapened the leagues reputation

Confidence from junior leagues also makes a HUGE difference in becoming a big leaguer. Also take into consideration his team sucks and currently we don’t have a prospect in our system quite like him, (PWF winger with the ability to play with the puck ON his stick), outside of JVR. Unless you consider Colborne a PWF lolll. Leivo will make our club at some point, and i don’t think its a matter of will he, more as when he.

To be fair, Leivo is on the young side of his draft year though.  He will still only be 19 when this season ends.  Not that I have high hopes for him – it will all come down to how he transitions to the AHL – but he does have that on his side.

50% is too high, imo. There should be at least 5 teams making serious offers to Getzlaf. He’s going to consider more than just the Leafs and Ducks. Even if they are the two teams on the inside track to sign him, you can’t rule out the possibility of him signing elsewhere. Even if the Leafs have a better chance to sign him than any other team, it’s still with less than a 50% chance, meaning it is more likely he signs somewhere else than in Toronto. Not worth the risk, if a deal can be made ahead of time, imo.

Also, i forget what the real stat was but i think i remember reading Leivo has taken like 20% of the teams shots, or is on for a high % of the teams goals or something, but it was a stat that really showed how much more effective his team is with him on the ice.

That’s the kind of risk you need to take, and be successful, in order to take the next step.  You don’t get anywhere by paying fair market prices for everything.

A lot more easy points as a center, and Henrique had a championship team, where as Leivo is the star of his team.

    Yeah true.
    -
Edit: Who does that favour in do you think?? I know it might favour Henriques numbers when he was younger..but in transition to the big leagues, learning how to win (what Henrique did) might be more important than learning how to be the star of a team and or learning how to carry a team on your back (what Leivo’s doing). Maybe i’m wrong though.

    3) Dissolve

yeah true. I have a weird sense with him. Always been kinda biased towards him since we drafted him. Called him as the darkhorse of all our prospects when we did, i think he’s really proving me lucky/right there.

Players that turned 18 between Sept. 16th, 2010 and Sept. 15th, 2011 were draft-eligible for the 2011 draft. Turning 18 in late May, Leivo was in the youngest third of eligible players. So yes, he does have that in his favour. He was still only a little under 2.5 months younger than average in his draft class, though (assuming average is turning 18 in mid-March).

I’ve been paying more attention to birthdays when looking at draft-eligible prospects this year, actually. If you look at Nathan MacKinnon and Anthony Mantha, their stats – at first glance – are pretty comparable. Then you look at their birthdays, and BAM! Mantha is 11.5 months older than MacKinnon. That’s the difference between a 1st overall pick and a mid-to-late 1st-round pick.
