Saturday Morning Links
Share

First off, let us all bow our heads and remember Bill Daly this morning, who died on a hill December 27th, 2012, fighting valiantly for the five-year contract limit.

So, the league budged a little on the contract limit (5 to 6 years for UFA signings) and salary variance (5 to 10%) components of their Thursday offer that was revealed yesterday, while leaving the makewhole payment where it was at $300 million.

A good thing that the NHL’s latest offer took a day to leak? Maybe. Brian Lawton seemed to think so. But absolutely do no get excited unless the counter offer from the NHLPA isn’t met with the same scripted responses from the league: we’re very disappointed, we thought we made some meaningful movement, we’re not sure where to go from here, the deal’s off the table, no plans to talk again, etc.

With each concession (I say that not in the true sense of the word concession, but insofar as getting the league to repeatedly improve their supposed best possible offer), Donald Fehr justifies his hire, his reputation and his money. Time and again he knew he could get more, and the question now is whether or not he thinks there’s still room to push before the season goes over the cliff edge.

Who Should the Leafs Buy Out?
Yesterday’s offer from the NHL included a compliance buyout clause for 2013-14. That last part is important, because it doesn’t come into play until the lowered cap is implemented next season, which could change if and on whom the Leafs might use it. I think the obvious answer is still the right one with Komisarek, even with his contract expiring July, 2014. May as well use it and free up more cap space for next season.

He’ll be fine, but if he doesn’t learn to play behind his own side of center, I don’t think it will be in a Canadian market.  This guy was meant for Columbus.

Hmmm……did u have the same feeling with Daigle, filatov, svitov, zherdev, samsonov? Besides Daigle do you see pattern here?

He’s a better prospect than any of those guys were, except for Daigle. He was pretty much a consensus #1 overall pick.. It is very rare for guys like that to become busts. For every Daigle/Stefan, there are a bunch of Nash/Kovalchuks. It’s very unlikely he doesn’t become an impact player in the NHL. You’ve got to be a pretty special player to go 1st overall, and he has an elite shot and elite skating ability already.

It’s funny… he’s actually a similar prospect to what Taylor Hall was, except he’s Russian, not Canadian.

Yakupov will be a goal scoring maching in the NHL.  Needs to learn how to block shots better before he gets killed however.  At the very least he is trying.

I’ve never been a fan of his and was happy to see Edm draft him, because I think he will be a bust……IMO…..he has the talent forsure but just a feeling I have…

I think people are jumping the gun when they suggest the Leafs should buy out Liles and Komisarek. First off, the NHL’s offer states:

“Each Club will be entitled to execute up to one “Compliance Buy-Out” prior to
    the 2013/14 season”

For this season the cap will be $70.2 million, so they have the rest of this season, plus the off season to make their decision.

Buying out Komisarek before we see what he can do under a new coach who may utilize his playing style more effectively would be jumping the gun, especially when he’s the only blueliner on this team that can effectively clear the crease.

In the case of Liles, I would like to see what he can do this season, concussion free, that way if he does play well, and Gardiner plus Rielly make him redundant as a LS puck carrying defenseman, Burke can trade him, and get a decent return, instead of wasting the buy out on him.

Unsure….I am sticking with Hockey Streams until the NHL is back. May even keep it then and cancel my cable.

Everything anybody wants to watch is found on the internet now.  Stupid cable companies have fucked themselves.

Nichuskin rated #8 in last ISS ratings. Can see him moving up to #5 or #6 after the WJC.

Still I think the Leafs would draft a centre if they had, say, the #5 choice – and I wouldn’t have a problem with that. Lord knows we NEED a skilled centre!

That 70.2 million then drop to 60 seems to have Burke’s finger prints all over it.  The Leafs will be excellently positioned for that.

I think anybody that considers Liles a good option for a buyout is missing the big picture anyway. It’s exactly as you say, he can be traded. Theres no way we will buy him out before the start of next season. Komi on the other hand is a goner I think. He has been here long enough and shown little enough to even warrant consideration for sticking around. We could sign a guy that can play better for less than half the money this offseason. In the meantime go with Holzer and sign Ranger to an NHL contract. I think if the season starts tomorrow we should be starting the paperwork to buy Komi out today.

I haven’t paid for cable in my life. My parents did when I lived with them but I haven’t lived with them, in 12 years. Have never missed games or shows. I will admit that I have had cable at times and do right now but sometimes when you move into a new apartment you get lucky, plug the tv into the cable and it works :)
