After a taking a 2-0 lead in the first period, Malcolm Subban (36 saves) was the story the rest of the way for Team Canada as they edged Team USA 2-1 and moved to 3-0 on the tournament.

1st Period

That’s more like it.

Canada played probably their most complete period of the tournament thus far and were able to neutralize most of the American forechecks as well as the USA’s active defense.  Trouba has been able to sneak in from the point to throw a couple of slapshots on net but aside from that, Team Canada has been pretty aware of what the US is trying to do out there.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored Canada’s first goal with a quick wrister from the slot.  A faceoff win, a couple of crisp offensive zone passes and the Americans overplaying the puck defensively were the keys in the build up to the RNH tally.

The second goal went to Ryan Strome after a Ritchie wraparound found its way to his stick for the near tap-in.  Canada’s forecheck led to a turnover in the offensive zone and Strome was the beneficiary of the hard work down low.

2nd Period

Not much to report in the second.  It was a tight checking period a no goals were scored but we did get to see some flashes of Nate MacKinnon and his potential if he were given enough icetime to make an impact.

Drouin looked fantastic once again.  I don’t catch many QMJHL games but I’ve definitely been sold on his potential as a lottery pick in the 2013 Draft.

3rd Period

As far as goals go, Jacob Trouba’s powerplay marker was the only goal and it was scored in transition on a 4-on-2 after Canada failed to capitalize on a 2-on-1 the other way.  I don’t envy Subban having to try and predict what would happen with that puck as it was tipped all over the place.

The period on the whole was rife with penalties and Canada’s powerplay didn’t look overly threatening.  Passes weren’t nearly crisp enough and Ryan Murphy once again passed up a great opportunity for a shot only to make a less than inspiring pass.  At this point, Harrington and Reinhart are the only two defensemen I would least like to see on the ice during a powerplay than Murphy.  He’s a better offensive defenseman than he’s shown this tournament and his defensive lapses at 5-on-5 are infuriating.

Tyler Biggs played a Tyler Biggs game in limited icetime.  He spent more time on the penaltykill than he does with the Oshawa Generals and was fine in the role.  His forecheck game was good and he was a little shot happy, avoiding having the puck on his stick for more than a couple of seconds at a time.  Biggs was defensively sound as he almost always is.  Not spectacular but effective.

Morgan Rielly made consistently smart decisions with the puck and finished up at +1 on the day. It was a small play, but on Canada’s 5 on 3 late in the third, a puck nearly squirted free in the neutral zone for an American break and Rielly laid out nicely to divert the puck to a teammate and away from danger.

So things went more or less to script with Canada and Russia facing off tomorrow morning at 9:00am EST for first in the division.  Assuming Slovakia can beat the Germans later today, the US will have to beat Slovakia tomorrow morning to make it through to the medal round.  Hopefully they’re able to get up for that game after a pair of pretty deflating losses.

@WG – Biggs saw less ice time than Rielly, but at one point (I think in the 3rd) he knocked Rielly off the puck.  Biggs looks much bigger out amongst the skill players than he does in the OHL.

@BCP:disqus   No doubt Drouin looks great out there, but is it my imagination or does Mackinnon not look bigger and physically stronger than Drouin?  To me Drouin looks quite slight and I would worry about using a lottery pick on a guy that might not be a sure thing in the NHL.  I do appreciate he is only 17 and perhaps he will be another Eberle.

Plus he’s a Toronto boy.  One of these days, a TO guy like Stamkos, Tavares or Seguin will want to play the Mats Sundin role.

Leafs needs to get that number 1 center in the draft. Hopefully Burke can also trade for or sign a UFA 1C.

Then the drafted player can learn the trade from the experienced 1C and play on a scoring  3rd line of youngsters.

Great game from Subban……not impressed for one minute by Murphy- the kid you hated
To play with cuz he’s a puck hog…Reinhart is a plug…Hamilton is waaaaaaay overrated
Rielly is easily the skill/hockey smarts gem of this group….Ouellet next

Biggs is a really cool project…he has wheels for sure, just needs some puck confidence
Bring on the whiner known as Yakopov…Kovalev 2.0

Hamilton strikes me as a guy with all the tools and no toolbox. Takes a lot of time deciding what to do with puck and usually makes a less than creative move with it. I’m sure he will have a long nhl career because of his size but more of a hall gill than a chara. Having watched Murphy live 1/2 dozen times over the last few seasons, I’d say your puck hog description is pretty close to his regular game.

Yeah i agree.  I wasnt sure if it was me being biased because we lost him to the Bruins but he just seems so empty when he is interviewed.  Doesnt mean he cant be a solid D-man but I wonder about how IQ and talent translate to the NHL and being a star.

Is Spott realy the best we can do for coaching?
Plays his “boys” way too much and the 2 men below the
Redline on the PP is ridiculous…..
Can not help grinning like a moron, thinking
About Gardiner, Rielly and Phaneuf rotating
    On our PP…..

Morning everyone, nice win for the guys in Red

Just finishing watching the game on PVR and scrolling through a few posts .

    A few comments

Rielly always seems to make the right play with puck

Spotts belief in Subban was warranted- Credit to both of them

Spott force feeding PP time to Hamilton is getting bizarre.  Rielly-Ouelette, or  Rielly -Murphy would have been more effective and creative on that 5 on 3

Who kidnapped Alex Galynchuck and will the Turds pay the ransom

Drouin has sick skills and McKinnon is starting to bring it on

Earlier I  thought Can would be in tough to medal,  I think  was wrong.

Good game, yes Spott was correct in starting Subhan, he played terrific.  Rielly was solid and play well, not the standout he was in the game before, just solid.  Can really see this team starting to gel and become a unit and RNH just seems to stand head and shoulders above everyone else, more and more.  Love Drouin and MacKinnon, both starting to really adapt to this level.

If a WJ player is listed as Undrafted (rather than 2013 or 2014 to show that their draft year hasn’t arrived yet), they’re essentially FA’s right?  Their draft year has come and gone, and NHL teams can freely sign them?

Not exactly.  There’s a signing period after the draft but once that ends, the player goes back into the draft again the next year, if I’m not mistaken.  Tanner Pearson, for example, was passed over in 2011 and then drafted in the 1st round in 2012

Magnitogosk “light” next season in Toronto?

If the cap gets to 60 Million next season would Penguins be forced to sell Malkin? Currently they are at 56.3 for 15 players but could buy-out Paul Martin. But long term two players that makes almost 18 million would make it difficult manage the rest of the roster

Malkin could continue to play with his pal Kulemin.

    JVR – Malkin – Kessel
    Lupul  – Grabo – Kulemin

Thanks.  I knew players went back into the draft and that undrafted players could be signed at some point (ala the undrafted Rupert twin signed in the summer), but wasn’t sure how it all worked.

I was thinking along the lines of what Undrafted players from any of the teams are worth considering for ATO’s right after the WJ’s, just in time for the Leafs training camp next month.
