I always loved watching Peter Zezel, he was just so damn good defensively.

Jeff Finger wasn’t the brightest of Fletcher moves either.

Neither was the Stempniak trade. Fletcher 2.0 was a disaster, IMO.

I am curious how much Burke could have received for Kaberle if he didn’t wait for an extra two years.  We know of the Fletcher proposal to Philly for Jeff Carter and a first round pick.

We also know Boston wanted Kaberle and the 2009 #7-overall draft pick for Kessel. At the time it was deemed a steep price for Kessel.  In hindsight if the deal was made, Leafs would have had Kessel and Seguin.  Now that would have been a lethal young duo.

Hindsight is 20/20 but MLSE paid Burke the $$$ not to make mistakes like Ferguson did evaluating talent.

Burke overestimated his roster going into 09-10 and it bit him big time.  It’s a shame he did not deal the reported players who would have netted first round picks last season.  It would have steered the club into a better draft position and gained some great sleeper picks in last year’s first round.  Perhaps Reilly, Grigorenko,  Forsberg, Teravainen, Subban.

    WOW.

I can honestly see both your points in this argument. (And that’s not like me at all).

I think it’s only reasonable that a veteran with a track record will get a longer leash from a coach…even if frustrates the fans. But we did eventually bench veterans if they had sucked for long enough.

Pretty sure he either thought it was 3 years for 3.5 mill TOTAL or that he was signing Kurt Sauer (not that that woud’ve been a great deal either). He’s old.

Yep…that makes sense…vets always have a longer leash…but it did happen with the Leafs…we benched established well paid and or previously injured vets…thats a fact..

lol, Other.  Don’t get carried away.  Armstrong was given numerous chances before being benched, and it was always for one game at a time.  No coach was going to just come in and crush Lombardi with lengthy benchings.  That is just an unrealistic fan expectation.  Likewise, no coach is going to judge a 10 year veteran like Connolly based on his most recent 10 games – especially when he played well most of the season.

Komisarek hasn’t been injured for years now.  You’ll notice that returning from injury, he was given an extensive leash to return to form.  Armstrong was given time too, but to be honest, I don’t think he was ever healthy enough to play.  And again, even when these guys have been benched, it’s been for just 1 game at a time, and then we’re looking for ways to slot them back in.  And people still don’t think this was accountable enough, so why would that be the case with Lombardi?  Just nonsense.

I think we all agreed vets get a longer leash..thats not in dispute…the fact remains though that well paid vets and or previously injured well paid vets were benched intermittently by Wilson and the Leafs….something that was supposedly forbidden by any reputable team..and would get your team black listed….I won’t even mention what happened to Colton Orr…

The puck can go backwards, the puck-carrier cannot. He was moving forward the whole time, so it’s a good goal.
