Don’t punish yourself

With the NHL lockout behind us and anticipation building ahead of a season that will start next week, a lot of the discussion surrounding the league has started to focus on actual hockey again. Not the business of hockey, but lineups, coaches, potential roster movement, the salary cap, and so on. It’s great.

But for a lot of fans there remains a sour taste in their mouths, brought on by just how ridiculous this whole thing was to begin with. Why did this have to drag on and wipe half a season for a deal that many people could see was there since October? Fans are still pissed, and I can totally understand.

While it seems like most have simply rejoiced at the thought of the NHL returning, some have decided to stick to their idea of punishing the league for locking them out of watching the game they love, whether it’s on television or at the arena. Many have said that the league basically isn’t apologizing enough, or haven’t brought forth initiatives to “win the fans back.”

Personally I could care less for that garbage. For a team to apologize to me in a statement on their website or an email means nothing, as it was pretty clear they all banded together to stop the game from happening in order to put together a business deal. It is what it is, or was what it was. The lockout was frustrating, but all things considered, we only missed out on 32 games of hockey or so.

Now, if people want to go ahead and punish the league by not returning to their seats or television sets, that’s their choice. I can understand if fans want to try hurting the NHL’s wallet. My only advice (which probably isn’t worth much) is this: don’t punish yourself to punish the NHL.

I was watching The Reporters on TSN yesterday and the crew on there brought up this issue. Steve Simmons mentioned that fans should perhaps just go to the games but avoid concession stands and whatnot. Hot dogs, nachos, beer, whatever. I could sort of see his point, making it by far the smartest thing Simmons has ever said. But then Cathal Kelly, who writes for The Star made a much better point; why rob yourself of your own in-game experience in an attempt to punish the NHL? And he’s absolutely right. If I’m at an NHL game and hungry for some nachos, I could take a few dollars out of the NHL’s hands by staying in my seat, but I’m still going to be hungry. I just don’t really see how I’m any further ahead. I guess I’m “sticking it to the NHL”, but again, I still want nachos.

The same goes for watching at home. I know many people have said fans should avoid the NHL for a week when it returns, to make a statement. Fair enough, make your statement. I’ll be hanging out watching hockey. If you’re fine with that, it’s all good. But if it’s going to make you unhappy, you should probably reconsider.

Maybe I’m a blind follower of the NHL. A sheep. But it would make me unhappy to be somewhere else while my buddies are drinking beer and watching the Leafs game, and I think any time you’re unhappy when you don’t need to be sounds pretty awful. So like the title says, punish the NHL if you feel you need to, but seriously look at whether you’re punishing yourself as well.

I honestly believe BB will pull off a few trades, not just for Luongo, before the season starts. Should be an interesting week once the T’s are dotted and I’s are crossed, or however Bettman wants to do it.

Fans shouldn’t protest, just come running back like always? Your only hurting yourself? I disagree completely…this is the fans chance to actually hold Bettman and Fehr accountable….in fact if the fans send a strong enough message this time around both these guys may actually think long and hard before ever doing this again… if you go running back.. your merely condoning their behavior and letting them know they can take you competely for granted anytime they please…

My punishment to the NHL for this CBA fiasco is to never spend another dollar on Leafs TV, any NHL gear or products for myself or anyone else or pay for a ticket to another NHL game.  But as for cheering for the Leafs or watching games on TV, let er rip Im pumped.  But my money, stays mine tyvm.

It will be like a white knight riding in to “rescue” the other GM’s from their mistakes. Should be fun to watch. Looking forward to it!

It will be interesting to see fan reaction in the Southern States. Fan protest in Canada would be hard IMO,

If anyone has tickets and wants to protest by not going, please consider me as a worthy person to “donate” the tickets to. I have never been to a live Leafs game and I promise not to enjoy it just for you.

Southern teams will have to re-energize with some daring moves in order to get any fan interest.  Luongo to Florida would be a stimulant in that market, Lecavelier out of  Tampa to say Montreal for something interesting would stimulate that market, etc.  Anaheim maybe has to make some kind of splash as well…and the list goes on.

Benn was a 5th Round draft pick and consistent 3 yrs 20+ goal scorer.  He is one year younger than Frattin!!!   Same age as JVR with similar size… Benn would be a great pick up.. Joe N would want Kadri in my opinion plus/plus

Support for the Leafs is fairly soft.  Last year a few times I was in meetings downtown Toronto on game days.  Went to the box office and could have bought tickets right there.  That was not the case 5 years ago.  Now, they are easy to get and at reasonable prices.

Trade #1To TORPaul MartinJoe Morrow/Simon Despres2nd Round Draft Pick 2013To PITNikolai Kulemin4th Round Draft Pick 2013Why Toronto makes this trade:
    * Leafs add approximately $1.2 million in salary for 2013, assuming buy out, no significant salary beyond upcoming seasonWith a glut of comparable wingers in terms of production, Toronto can afford to lose Kulemin.  Also, in exchange for taking on the poor contract of Martin, they get a solid defensive prospect (of which the Penguins have a great deal) as well as another high pick in the deep 2013 draft.  Martin can play out the season on our blue line and be bought out at the end of the year thanks to MLSE’s financial muscle. Why Pittsburgh makes this trade:The Penguins could definitely use another winger and Kulemin, who is only 1 season removed from his 30 goal outburst, is a nice, afforable option for them.  His strong defensive game and strength on the boards will also come in handy for the Pens.  Finally, they also are adding a winger that Malkin is extremely comfortable with.  The Pens can afford to give up one of their prize defensive prospects to add a player of Kulemins potential while also dumping a large salary without having to exercise one of their buyouts – leaving their buyouts in tact for different targets.  Additionaly, the trade opens up nearly $2.5 million in capspace for the Penguins to add another player down the road.
    Trade #2To TorontoRick DiPietro
    1st Round Draft Pick 2013

    To New York Islanders
    Clarke MacArthur

    Why Toronto makes this trade:
    * Leafs add approximately $1.25 million in salary for 2013, assuming buy out, no significant salary beyond upcoming season

This one is obvious – the Leafs get what should be a very high first round pick in next year’s draft by taking on what just might be the worst contract in NHL history.  They are essentially buying this pick as DiPietro will be bought out ASAP.Why New York makes this trade:
Not only do the Islanders get rid of DiPietro, but they add a winger who can play on their top 2 lines and who will come off the books at the end of the year.  The cash strapped Islanders are unlikely to be able to afford buying DiPietro out (especially while the Yashin buyout is still on their books) and will open up more than $6 million in cap space going into 2013/2014 without excersising a buyout leaving them the option of buying out lesser contracts down the road.  Although their first rounder should be a solid pick, the Islanders have a stable of young stars and prospects already and should prefer to supplement those players with veteran free agents from what looks to be a strong class next offseason vs. continuing to simply add youth.

    Trade #3To TorontoRoberto Luongo
    Zach KassianTo VancouverTyler BozakNazim Kadri

    * Leafs add approximately $2.983 million in salary for 2013, assuming buy out, no significant salary beyond upcoming season

This trade is a no brainer for both teams at this point.

Leafs add a total of $5.433 in salary for the 2013 season, 2 salaries to buy out (Martin and DiPietro), a solid defensive prospect, a 1st and 2nd rounder in 2013, a potential physical forward on the bottom 3 lines in Kassian as well as Luongo.  They give up Kulemin, MacArthur, Bozak, Kadri and a 4th rounder.
