I used up all my lockout glee in yesterday’s post (feel free to read it here) so here’s a collection of links around the interwebs covering the one on and only topic that matters today, the return of the NHL.

The 7 most immediate questions now that NHL lockout is over
Sean Leahy takes a look at what to watch for as hockey gets underway. Of course Luongo rumours make an appearance on the list.

The NHL returns; looking at the Maple Leaf roster—tweaks, predictions and player ratings Part I: Today, the back end
Michael begins previewing and dissecting the Leafs roster. On a day filled with optimism this is a healthy dose of reality that there are huge holes in the Leafs roster.

Plan A or Plan B
Hope in the Big Smoke is already pumped for what the Leafs could be up to this summer and is as anxious as the rest of us to see how the Leafs roster shakes out.

Leafs coach Randy Carlyle: ‘Great day for hockey
The Sun reaches out to the Leafs head coach on what his plans are for getting his team together.

Luongo to Maple Leafs gaining momentum
The Sun again with the most popular rumour.

NHL Lockout: Highlights of the NHL- NHLPA Tentative Deal
A few interesting points that I didn’t touch on yesterday; One way Contracts and AHL contracts in excess of $375,000 will count against the cap even if the player is playing in the AHL, the possible trade deadline is April 5th, and this year’s free agency period could begin on July 5th. Also not mentioned here is that there will be an interview period prior to free agency.

We have so much blue line talent in the 4,5,6 spots and not enough 1,2,3 but we are getting there.

Alec, is there going to be an MLHS fantasy league?  Or has one already been made from this past September/October?

Agreed, it isn’t just the Jason Smith type defenceman that does the dirty work, the 4th line grinders do that stuff too.

Fraser is a depth Dman at best, IMO. A #7 guy or top AHL call-up. Holzer isn’t as tough/aggressive as his name sounds. But he should be a decent 5-6 Dman in the long-run. Personally, I’m not comfortable with him in the top 6 already, tough. He could use more NHL experience through injury call-ups first.

We have very good organizational depth in defense. Burke has done a superb job in the collection of young assets…seems to follow the A.A. model just in a longer period of time.

Fraser is pure depth but he would be effective in the 10-15 game due to injury etc. over the course of an 82game season. Holzer isn’t going to Stu Grimson someone but he does play with confidence and strength in the defensive zone and we don’t really have that.

On D I think we are fine, especially if JG gets healthy

We don’t have any general meaness up front, certainly no meaness that can play any where then the fourth line regularly

Kessel, Lupul, Grabo, Mac, JVR, Bozak, Connolly, Lombardi, Frattin, Kadri, Steckel, McClement, Brown, Komarov, Colborne, Ashton

Phaneuf, Liles, Gunnarsson, Franson, Gardiner, Komisarek, Holzer, Fraser, Kostka, Ranger, Rielly

    Reimer, Scrivens, Rynnas

My guess for the 30 players invited to camp.

I am not saying at all that i want Kadri involved in a Luo/Kassian deal, but could you imagine a line of Kassian/Ross/Biggs in the future?!? It would be one of the most feared lines in the entire NHL, and I would LOVE to RAM Kassian down Buffalo’s throat 8+ times a year. They purposely traded him to the Western Conference so they had to deal with him at least as possible!
